The United States' National Anthem was penned by the lawyer Francis Scott Key while watching an attack on Fort McHenry in Baltimore in 1814. As he watched throughout the night, his only method of knowing if the Americans had not yet lost was the flag that was illuminated by the rocket's red glare.
This poem was later set to music and became a popular song of patriotism, but did not become the official national anthem until 1931.
The intriguing thing about the national anthem is that it ends with a question. What does that say about our country? I ponder this and more in this episode.
