How are post rewards distributed between authors? To find out, let’s take a look at some September stats.
So it seems this September, 6704 Steemians have authored a total of 60657 posts. Their combined rewards totalled almost $1.1 million (in Steem dollars). This is $164 per author on average, but of course, rewards aren’t distributed evenly. The median monthly payout is just two cents!
As you can see, almost half of the authors earned nothing, and 2/3 earned under $1.
If we look at the distribution of votes, it looks more cheerful:
There were 112 authors whose posts were downvoted more often than upvoted, and further 586 who enjoyed about no votes, but one author in four was upvoted at least 100 times that month.
Most votes don’t bring any money though. To illustrate this, let me present @tata.lucette, who can in all honesty be named the Most Undervalued Author of September. Her 61 posts received 353 votes, and just $0.01 in payments!
Here are some other Steemians who have received least rewards relative to number of votes:
Author | Votes | Rewards |
---|---|---|
@otisbrown | 353 | $0.84 |
@tata.lucette | 353 | $0.01 |
@ric | 354 | $0.35 |
@incomemonthly | 356 | $0.57 |
@wolvoman80 | 359 | $0.40 |
@freebornangel | 378 | $0.59 |
@sonyanka | 385 | $0.62 |
@bontonstory | 476 | $0.37 |
@pilgrimtraveler | 540 | $0.52 |
@movietrailers | 685 | $0.08 |
I'm going to compile similar stats by post categories later this week. And here are some interesting stats by other authors:
- A collection of Steem Stats for September by @furion has some interesting stats on top paid authors, power ups vs downs, and promoted content. It looks like promoting your posts makes real sense!
- @ontofractal publishes daily Advanced Steem Metrics reports, here’s the latest one. They have distribution of post payouts, and lists of top posts by payout, votes, and number of comments.
I've used the steemtools library by @furion to parse data from the blockchain, and ChartBlocks for charts.
Woohooo!
I'm number five!!

Its saying you got a lot of votes, but are on the list of people who got the least rewards from it.
One of the reasons you did this to yourself (and you did do this to yourself), is because on certain days you make more than 4 root posts in a 24 hour period.
You get severe penalties when you post too many stories (more than 4 a day).
If you read Q8 on my FAQ that went viral, you'll see more about why you should stop competing against yourself.

By the way, they implemented the 4-root post rule is known as issue #176 here:
