STEEM-POCALYPSE SURVIVAL GAME CONTEST - Day 8 Round 2 - the Kiwi's story

The sun was already setting by the time the two men collapsed to the ground under the drooping branches of a tree. Exhausted and sweating, they lay panting heavily as if they had just run for miles instead of tottering around the field looking for plants. Each movement was now painful and the smell of rotting skin wafted into the air as they struggled to find a comfortable spot.

Their search for anything useful for the wounds that had festered, turned up nothing of value. The feed of nettle, while it had cheered them up earlier, did little for them now. Their bodies were starved of calories, and fighting the infections was proving too much.

Slowly, one by one, their brains began shutting down the organs they felt were not needed right now so they could direct efforts to combatting the infection. The men lay back with their eyes closed, as if asleep, and waited for the inevitable.

With no energy left, and every movement greeted with flaring pain, the best they could hope for was the end to come quickly. But hope did not die so easily.

A little spark remained, it burned as bright as it could, offering the promise of a miracle, if they could just hold on until morning.

The sun began to set, casting golden rays across the fields of nettles, and leaving the men in deep shadow, as if hiding them from any that might prey upon them. As the sun left, so did its warmth, and the men’s bodies cooled quickly as night stole in.

Frantic and desperate, their brains shut down more organs and extremities in a last ditch effort for survival. As the temperature dropped, so too did the men’s heart rate and breathing, until it was barely perceptible.

The brains held on grimly, keeping themselves alive until the darkest hour. But by then all the available energy was spent and there was nothing left. Firing off the last few working neurons, it gave the men a glimpse of bright white light and a welcoming face, before they shut down forever.

And so ends the adventures of The Kiwis for this series of STEEM – Pocalypse.
