Steemit Payout Limit - Why upvote old posts? Is that someway right?

You need to read, the Steemit WhitePaper; I havent, but will definetly do! the "Payout Limit" is 24 hours, why I can upvote old posts? if that is not going to benefit the author?, because payout already passed?
