Why I deactivated my facebook account!

I have been a heavy user of social networking platforms like facebook and Instagram since a long time. I created my facebook account back in 2009 and have been addicted to social networking, just like everyone else out there. During all these years, I have witnessed the development of facebook from a website with a very little number of users and limited features to a platform having millions of users all across the world. Today, Facebook is the largest social network having millions of users and a market cap of over 700 B.

But a couple of months ago, I deactivated my facebook account permanently, and I have all the reasons to support my decision. I am listing some of those reasons here.

  1. Privacy - Back in 2009-10, when facebook was in its early stage, I thought that my data including my email address, contact number, location etc. was safe from hackers but today it is a well established fact that facebook uses its database, which consists all above details of its users along with their interests and even personal messages into their marketing algorithms to optimize their advertising and even sells our data to businesses.

  2. Spam - Facebook nowadays is full of spam i.e. unwanted advertisements from various businesses. These spam messages had filled my facebook inbox and even comments. If you have your email and contact number public on facebook, then be ready to receive lots of spam emails and text messages as well. Although they offer a privacy policy to secure your account from unwanted people, but it's of no use in reality.

  3. Advertisements - As mentioned in above points, facebook has turned into a advertising platform more than a social network. Users are getting bombarded with advertisement all the time. The 700 B market cap of fb is only because of ads.

  4. No user rewards - While facebook and it's stakeholders are playing in millions, it's users are not rewarded with even a single penny for their engagement to the community.

Keeping in mind these drawbacks, I have permanently switched to Steemit and other decentralized platforms.
