If I was told to choose between giving a gift and getting one, I would go with the latter. Why? Well, without much thought, I would simply say it is because there is much excitement in receiving. Many givers today do it for the Bible says “Blessed are those who give than those getting Acts 20:35,” others because people are watching and the rest because they have not much use for the item. So I ponder, is it the gift, or the giving that carries sense. Again, I go with the gift.
There are many gifts that we all are given equally, like the air, our hearts, life and the 24 hours. These, most of us value and find hard to give out because some would need mending, others could take ages to recover and the rest we’d lose for good. These we even do not put a price tag to. Then there are gifts we pick along the way, like friends, jobs, different talents and among many others those aging t-shirts we find trouble letting go of. These we also grow strong attachments to.
Surprisingly, there is a gift I know of whose value for many of us has dropped like the current prices of the livestock in Isingiro. A gift that is exchanged for fancy dresses, fame, fortune, not forgetting that ticket to the famous Kool and the Gang concert. A number of people have been mocked, kicked out of crews and shunned because they are in the deficiency of ‘man enough benefits’. Wanting to prove a point, they give an exhibition to the interested audience. This starts with the same old sweet smiles they are used to. They ask for more so you give them a demo on that voluptuous fat you’ve been keeping in that lengthy clothing but because you fell into a den of starving lions, there is a need to feed them to their fill. More is all they can think about while you on the other hand are in thought of what to give next. Returning those moneys back is an option impossible for them to accept. Let alone its existence is verily unheard of in these present times. They aren’t backing down anyway so why not? Why not give them the desire of their hearts, besides there’s nothing to lose. It’s just a onetime thing you promise not to do… again… till the right time… with the right one.
Dawn breaks, everything falls into place and it’s gone. Your sweet and pure virgin self has run away carrying that dignity you held so high up along. That self-esteem that kept your head elevated, that mother told you to pride yourself in gone in one night, just like that. You swear you stayed awake, you did not blink even a second. You paid in full and it’s gone never to return. In the end the giver is ill-fated and the receiver pleased and satisfied from his fruitful harvest.
