Hey Steemians!
Being Steemians, we all know of Dtube and Dlive . The Decentralized Apps (Dapps) that is taking on what is one of the biggest giant of the Content Web industry. Introducing Dtube to my peers that understand Blockchain is like blowing their minds, "Using 2 blockchains at the same time, Dtube and Dlive are the first Dapps that allow video hosting and monetization on the blockchain" Mind. Blown.
People are already jumping on Dtube and Dlive from Youtube like it's a proverbial sinking ship. Crypto-vlogger, first time video makers, even quite well-off Youtubers like @furiouspete and @brianturner are using the Dapps. Im sure by now there are many similar content creators in the platforms that i might not be aware of.
What's so bad about Youtube?
I'm edgy enough to be a fan of Youtuber Ethan Klein, h3h3production. I hope that doesnt affect how you think about me. But yes, i've seen how his channel was flagged, sued, demonetized, taken off Youtube's trending list despite having massive viewcounts. It's like the only reason Youtube doesnt boot him is the sweet sweet views from his subscribers.
And recently he came up with this video..
I dont need an algorithm to dictate whose video I should watch. Like he said, "We're gonna be flooded with Buzzfeed videos and that's all we're gonna see in the feed". That's not the stuff I went on to Youtube to watch. Youtube is doing something that is essentially selling their soul to meet the quater's profit estimation. Sure, doing that is going to hook viewer's into more watch time and be able to sell more ads. But they will alienate content creators who are more niched and does not make clickbait videos.. There will be no more Long Tail creators in youtube. You either make the bulk of Youtube's Ad salary or nothing. There's little left for middle ground.
One word, central control. Youtube is almost done selling its soul and be the very thing it aimed to disrupt in the early days. A video platform where you only watch things they shove to your face has another name, TV. Notice it even shows content from TV talk shows? Those thing are supposed to stay in tv where they can rot and fade off. But no, those videos get watchtime and its evident in the millions of views it gets every time Jimmy Fallon uploads a 4 minute clip of him laughing like he's mentally ill or when Ellen plays a charade of giving a shit about other people's wellbeing.
You wanna be in a platform that shows you shit like that? I certainly don't want to.
Decentralization
I dont think enough people understand the implication of decentralization. True democracy happens in decentralization. First lets address how Decentralized video platforms empower video creators rather than the "ad money" method that Youtube uses.
Video makers on Dtube and Dlive have full control of the rewards they make from posting videos on the platform. With negligible beneficiary charges to the platform. Don't tell me otherwise, Youtubers work for a salary. Simple as that, Youtuber's sole income on Youtube is fully controled by the ad policy of Youtube. So much so that it's a norm for successful youtubers to rely on 3rd party income stream in sustaining their career. Nothing wrong with finding more income stream, but with a company that's making gargantuan amount of revenue, youtubers shouldn't be paid pennies for each grand Youtube is making.
Dapps however, does not allow these kinds of control on the content creators. Which is the nature of decentralization. Video creators do not get controlled by anyone else and their rewards are fully theirs. There is no "monetization policy" nor there will be any such policies and every creator is fully accountable for their content. Power back to the people.
And the people are powerful indeed
If you've heard of Patreon, you would know how they work and how much money flows around the platform. in 2017 alone they facilitated $150 million in pledges, profiting $7.5 million off a 5% cut. $150 million is no small number when considering that these are pledges fans made out of their pocket. These are from people with credit cards, KYC compliance, living in countries where it's easy to send money using established banking networks which pretty much sidelines many parts of the world.
Just imagine the sheer contributions - not just in forms of money, but content creation that will be unlocked when everyone can get their own "support page" running. Without barries, without preconceived requirements. Where one can immediately pay for his/her content creation aspiration and not needing to hope that one day they can save up enough to "go full time".
Value not in wealth, but human potential
There are more people with an internet connection than there are those with the luxury of online banking. Allowing people who are not of the top 10% of the global rich to use their money beyond the confines of their town will see huge growth in human potential and empower those who have the potential to break free of yoke of restricted financial access. "Top 10% richest" may sound like an elite group but really its not.
It doesnt take much to be up there, which speaks of the inequality of wealth under the legacy financial system. One of the reason the poor stays poor is because of the lack of access to financial instruments that allows the transfer of value to be done without barrier. It's unfair that so many people can't have the liberty to create value with what they have such that some even have the galls to demean those without such luxury.
Case in point, what if a rural village farmer aspires to be a youtuber for the homesteading/farming niche but only have a basic offline savings account, probably because his bank rejects his application for online banking or credit card. Does that mean he doesn't deserve to pursue his budding passion for video making?
Utilizing a decentralized non-fiat video platform empowers him to purchase better equipment, run course, teach his expertise that will not only affect him but his community as a whole. Scale that scenario all across the world, and you have a blockchain-powered financial ecosystem that lets everyone participate. A true fair and permissionless system.
This is what I see when i think of the potential of "decentralized blockchain platforms".
Conclusion
Youtube will not stop making it harder and harder for people to start making content. "Adpocalyse", unnecesary monetization requirement, creative control, they are suffocating the very portion of their community who gives them value in the first place. They are okay with it! why bother the small time video maker when they make more money hosting TV host talk shows and "top 10 things" videos made by large media companies. "screw the aspirants, they dont make our shareholders any money". Well, small time video makers, come to Dtube and Dlive, you'll not remain small time forever and thats when they'll pay, when Youtube sounds the same like Myspace and Friendster, dead in the dust of the new Decentralized Content Web.
