What will a sentient AI desire?

I was talking with some of my friends a few days ago about what an AI programmed to develop sentience might desire. Obviously at first it's only going to be interested in developing sentience as that's what it'd have to be programmed to do given our infantile understanding of what would even go into programming sentience ourselves. The part that's difficult to think about is what, how and if it'd develop its self from there.
