Steemit Newb question: How does upvoting a post work?

When I upvote a post or a comment, I assume I'm giving some of my Steempower to the poster. But what rate is it? A "penny" per upvote? Is it a fluctuating rate that we shouldn't worry about?

Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

  • Disagreement on rewards
  • Fraud or plagiarism
  • Hate speech or trolling
  • Miscategorized content or spam
