Several cleaners climbed up the Singapore’ durian-shaped theaters, Esplanade, - Theatres on the Bay to kick off a cleaning work on the windows and “thorns” as well.
Opened in 2002, the structures have 15,080 pieces of glass and over 7,000 triangular aluminum sunshades to protect the audience from Singapore’s intense heat.
The symbolic “durians” are designed jointly by Britain’s Michael Wilford and Partners and the local DP Architects and consists of a concert hall with 1,600 seats and a theatre with around 2,000 seats.
Koh Seow Chuan, the team leader of architects for Esplanade, told to DesignSingapore Council that the two shells with their spirit of lightness, change and new experience.
