Steem improvements. Why I encourage you to unfollow me

in steem •  7 years ago

Howdy y'all! Hope you're having a productive and relevant Wednesday!

You read that title correctly. I just got up to a hundred followers, and now I'm encouraging most of you to unfollow me. Hear me out before you go and run away too fast. I think this is important.

I follow sixty-something folks on here. I think I interact with maybe ten? Maybe.

These people improve my experience here. They are why I'm here. I'm here to interact with and learn from interesting, helpful, quality people. If I'm not getting that interaction from some folks, they are actually distracting from my experience and taking away attention that could be focused on progress. And I may be doing exactly the same in your feed.

I think I will make a comment letter to the ones I unfollow, explaining why. I like that idea because it gives folks insight on how to make the place better.

So unfollowing people can make our community better all around by increasing the concentration of valuable interaction on the blockchain.

Thanks for reading, and think twice before following! Interact if this is valuable to you. Disregard if it's not.

Stay relevant y'all ;)

Nate

I havent had much in the way of extra time lately. Frankly i came on to see if you had posted so i could hand out my ^ haha hope to be back soon. You're right i would say: be followed, rather than the other way round. It truly keeps your feed relevant!

Thanks man! Means a lot. You're definitely not on the chop list. You guys are awesome, how's mama and mini elf?

She's doing well overall. We were talking last might about how minielf is now about thirteen inches long. It's hard (for me) to understand how she even fits in there! My dear wife is so little to begin with!
Minielf is practising her karate in mommas tummy all day most days i guess. I was told the other day that it was a "typical future dad thing to say" but screw that guy- it blows my freeking mind to feel her spinning around and layin out some serious side kicks etc.. It sure is magical. I've thought to write about it on my blog, but figured i wouldnt be ultra relevant if i did, so i haven't.

Bro, write about everything! If it's relevant to your life, it's relevant! Kids are super relevant :)

The daddy part of pregnancy is odd. We don't conceptualize the kid til we can hold it, I've been the same way with all of ours. My wife used to use the baby to kick me at night lol

Haha totally! Wifes been getting a laugh out of minielf kicking me lately

Finally, another level head! I have found, if you are lucky around 10% of your followers interact with you.

Unfortunately there's a pretty large culture of follow for follow, rather than simply following for the content that resonates with you.

People are too wrapped up in numbers, even when the are meaningless. That's why it's important to flag self-promoting beggars. We must demand quality if we want quality.

You know you've found a fake personality if you are unfollowed because you unfollowed them.

Thank you for keeping it REAL, my friend.

Hey, I'm really glad you guys got something going!!

I actually found out about the naming and new profile last night while clearing out folks. The announcement got buried and lost in a pile of other irrelevant posts. I thought it was an awesome idea that somehow fizzled out. Super happy to have found otherwise.

That's great to hear, my friend. I am not going to let this fizzle. 😀

There are actually three new profiles. The other two are @kin-shep and @shep-heard.

Just a quick idea I had:

What if there was a bot that would see the post and location and go announce it to users on steem via a bot comment that there was an event or a person in need in their area?

I'm not too smart about computers, but after seeing all the ways bots get used on the platform, I don't imagine it would be impossible.

That's a great idea. We have a couple others as well. The hope is this takes off and we catch the attention of some coders that would be interested in creating such a thing.

Make an iso post. I'll resteem it and share it on FB too. I know a couple coders, but they're pretty busy folks. I'll forward a screenshot of this to them.

Will do, but not until we get things flowing. I haven't even created the description and instruction blog for@shep-heard yet.😀

Now following both and thinking of as many reasons to use them as I can :)

Once we're settled in the new house, I plan on hosting crypto/steem meetups. I'll be sure and list them on there.

Hope it's useful to you :)

I'll pass, but I do keep regularly clean my following list.

I would say a solid 90% of my "followers" don't care what I post. How can they when they follow 10-20-30k people?

Right! And each person they follow posts 1-12 times a week? No chance of being seen.

I kinda try to intentionally not follow whales for that reason. Some have a circle that they interact with, but I'll likely never be in it, so there's no use.

Thanks for sticking around :)

Always a good thing to go over the list of people you are following!
I do the same. I do remove people who become inactive and also throw out people who are not willing to interact. Not with me, not with anyone. They just post, use bots and hope for the best!
I doubt it, if you should notice them. If you do remove them from the list, because there were not responsive, why inform them then?
But when do you decide to add new people to the list?

I added two to the list just yesterday :)

I removed a bunch, something around twenty. Most were inactive and the others just weren't relevant to me right now. You're right about the explaination. I decided against it.

I follow a guy called @kafkanarchy84 that shares a lot of cool stuff. Some of the folks I followed were folks that he shared a post from. I didn't talk with them after said post, and he shares some of their work, so I can just keep him instead and check back in with the other folks when it's convenient. Does that make sense?

It does make sense! I will take a look at his blog! Thx for the tip. It is hard to find new Steemians which are worth our time, upvote and attention!

Indeed!

But once you do, it is rewarding and encouraging.

Maybe I'm lucky, but I've found more quality people here than on any other digital medium.

I can back this. Also it looks like the relationships are more genuine here and lasts longer!

Naw, I'll keep you.

I do wish I could make the 40 or so bidbot, resteemers that have followed me go away.

I actually flagged and downvoted one once and haven't had a problem with them since.
