Are Meetups good for Steem? If so how can we encourage more of them?

in steem •  5 years ago  (edited)

I put a post up yesterday to see who in Wales might be interested in a second Steem Wales meetup.

Out of the dozen or so active steemians in Wales there has so far been an encouraging response.

I've only been to one Steem Meetup so far but they do seem like a good idea.

I use to compile a regular listing of all the Steem Meetups around the world, like this one...

There used to be quite a few every month. I haven't hunted round to check yet but I hope they are still going on.

There were regular meetups in places like Adelaide (@mattclarke), Toronto (@steembirds), Aachen (@detlev), Munich (@steem-munich) and Vienna (@manncpt & @mundharmonika). And also ad-hoc events organised by @yoshiko & @yasu24, @thealliance and @canna-curate.

I would be interested to hear from the organisers of these events, as well as people who attended them...

  • Have they been worthwhile?
  • Have they been good for networking and strengthening your connections on Steem?
  • Do you think they help improve retention on the platform?
My guess, and my hope, is that there will be positive answers to all three of these points.

If that is the case, what can be done to encourage more Steem Meetups around the world.

Of course numbers might be low in many areas but meetups can be small to start.

Would funding for venues, refreshments and publicity help encourage meetups? Or would that be overkill?

Is finding other Steemians in your area a major limiting factor?

Meetups can take many forms...

They can be purely social, or they can include a training element.

They can even be more outward looking and can be recruitment focused.

What do people think about Steem Meetups?

Are they worth encouraging?

What would help make more happen?

Would you be interested in organising one if you had some help?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Steem Meetup Calender Worldwide!! 👍 👍 👍

I have already had a similar one for Europe. Only unfortunately the participation of Steemians and others leaves much to be desired! Participants have unfortunately dropped to almost zero.
Nevertheless I will continue to organize Meetups in Graz (A), Amstetten (A), Chemnitz(D), and in other cities.
Again in Plannung Innsbruck, Salzburg (we already had a Meetup)

Meetup are very helpful, especially for new Steemians! That's why my wish dear Steemians uses this unique opportunity to exchange ideas at Meetups!
in this sense: Steem On!
Cheers 🤠

Hope people come to a Steem Meetup at least once. I was at 2 Meetups, too. The best thing is to combine the Meetups with activities. e.g. bowling, hiking together....

cheers and thx for the video, with a great song!! Steem on!!

!tipuvote 3.0

Good idea to combine with activities.

In Adelaide, South Australia, we have a regular monthly meet up. Last Thursday of Every month, The Jade Monkey on Flinders Street. 6PM onwards.

We still have them, we just don't make posts about them anymore. :) If you're reading this and planning a trip to Adelaide, Australia, make sure you plan to be at our meet.

I believe that it is assisting with retention.

They have been excellent events for networking, making new friends, and most importantly, to me; meeting people that I would have never otherwise came across in my day to day life.

That is good news as I have to visit my friends in Flinders Ranges the next time again.

Good to hear about the Adelaide meetups are still going.

And glad to hear about the benefits.

They are definitely worth doing. I've been to several in London organised by @redrica and even for one of my own. Any time Steemians get together there is good discussion and new people may get enthused.

Have a !BEER

There is nothing better than meeting fellow steemians irl.
We had a fascinating non stop chat the whole time we spent together.

Thanks for organising it @steevc

How about another meet up in Cambridge some weekend soon? @adetorrent is up for it.
I think I have enough tokens for a
!BEER

I was sad I couldn't make that one, had family commitments that day, but heard you guys had a great time!

I'd love another out of town meetup, really enjoyed Leicester last time for @steemcampuk! Please tag me if you do organize anything soon :)

Will do @redrica I'm thinking about a meet up in Cambridge soon.

If there is anything that people would like to see in Cambridge let me know.

It's a beautiful city and great for photography.

Id come to a meetup in Cambridge! Keep me posted : )

Hi Basil, I will keep you posted. I'm thinking about the first or second weekend in September?

  ·  5 years ago (edited)

Hope I can get a London meetup one day.

Do you know if there is another one in the works? @redrica

And thanks for the BEER.

Yes.. I've been really busy over the summer and needed to take it easy, but it's definitely on my to do list to get the next meetup organized! Hopefully by late Aug/early Sept :)

Yup.. The meetups have always been fun and engaging and always some new faces I find..

If every meet up is like that people are just crazy to miss them ;)

Hello @veritanuda - I haven't met you before.

I see you are from London way. I have added you to the list of active UK steemians...

Are you going along to the London Steem Meetup that @redrica has organised for tomorrow?

I did yes. You can see what a nice time we all had here

Hope to see you all again soon :)

Have fun at tomorrow's meetup !

Please tag me in the next south East meet up post! I was just discussing steem meetups with @cryptogee who is also in London so we'd like to be a part of it (and hope we are both free as well)!

Will do. @redrica can add you to her list for the next London meetup

Awesome! Thanks 😀

Hey @pennsif, unfortunately I can't get to this steem meetup as I can't get to London in the evenings, weekends are better :(

I attended my third steemit meetup yesterday. They’ve all been fun social events. First one I attended, we met for pizza, second one was to pan gold and yesterday was to watch a baseball game. @derekrichardson organizes Los Angeles events and folks drive up from San Diego or drive from north of Los Angeles. Yesterday I met @mariannewest who organizes San Diego steemit meetups.I’ve enjoyed every single LA steemit event and look forward to them. I like knowing the people I follow IRL and I value all the advice they’ve given me to press on and keep writing. Their friendship is an encouragement. I recommend meetups 👍🏻🎉☺️

I have yet to write of yesterday’s meetup but here’s my past posts on the pizza party and panning for gold:

Happy to hear the meetups are running well.

Do you have dates for any more meetups @derekrichardson and @mariannewest ?

We just had one last Sunday. Derek organized it 👍

These sound fun I would go steemit or not hahahaha to pan for gold, always wanted to do that !!!! Wish I was closer

I believe so. I would be willing to support a "proof of meetup" challenge, people post pics of Steem meetups and earn upvotes and free accounts for new people.

Our Adelaide gig has a "proof of meet up" bot. He's called @frogcake. You come to three Adelaide meetups, and you delegate at least 100SP - and every night, the bot picks 11 random people to award a 100% upvote to the most recent comment.

The biggest delegation is from @mattclarke, who of course, masterminded the whole thing.

@frogcake is also stockpiling account creation tokens, so we can onboard any newcomers there and then. Attendance has dipped a little, Adelaide's Winter and Crypto Winter coinciding and all; but we have a core group who know when and where; and come along when they can. Great bunch.

Have a look to #SteemMeetupAachen and #SteemitMeetupAachen
We even livestream the speeches.

Love to get any support for the September meetup. The safe the date post will be there this week at #SteemMeetupAachen and it is our 7th event.

we can integrate https://task.steemwhales.com with meetups from @heimindanger

we can integrate https://task.steemwhales.com with meetups from @heimindanger

Sounds good @theycallmedan.

I going to doing another compilation of upcoming meetups.

Would you like me to include this 'proof of meetup' challenge in that post?

Hey @pennsif,

all the meetups are in someway different.I've been to Munich and Rotterdam and this where great. I did two small ones by traveling in Bali and with all this people I have still contact.

We do the Aachen meetup not in a pub or bar but in the meeting room of a company with a nice roof garden and a BBQ. There we do a mix of speeches with slides and great food plus beer and a lot time for networking. this format offers a mixture of knowledge transfer and getting known more people.

Next one will be mid-end September.

I've watched the videos of past Aachen meetups - they would look a very good format.

Let me know when you have the date of the next meetup.

A very secret information, as this is not public yet, but we plan the 21.9.19 in Aachen

Great idea but far for me to travel but think we should build more in the UK 💯🐒

Hopefully we can get a few more meetups going around the UK.

Would be great to see 💯🐒

I think the canna curate meetup went great! It injected some positivity into the group, and we plan for next years to be even bigger!

Looks like it was a great event.

Will you be holding next year's event in the same location?

@Pennsif!!! We have missed you!!!

Hi @riverflows - hope all is going well down your way.

When is it going to happen??

Have there been any Steem Meetups in India?

Hey @pennsif, here is your BEER token. Enjoy it!

Do you already know our [BEER Crowdfunding](https://steemit.com/cryptocurrency/@beerlover/let-s-grow-and-update-the-beer-token-huge-crowndfunding-as-crowdsale)

Meetups and promo is always great but I think what rly hasn’t helped steemit get far off the ground is it’s obsession with iteslef. It’s not going to bring in new people and big bloggers when the main topics that get rewarded are just steemit related. Time and time again I see talented people get very little and any kind of promo steem thing getting loads of votes even see it on my page and most ppl will just lose interest fast. I personally
Think more emphasis on voting none steemit related high quality posts or high talent posts would help the most.

Its like all the successful people on YouTube only talking about YouTube it needs to get way way way more varied but I guess people need to know they will get more than £1.50a post to put a ton of time into editing content so atm most ppl only create content to put on both channels at the same time.

This is a dilemma which I hope will begin to change with the new curation initiatives starting up.

I think so - formal or informal it's all good!
