Instead of minnows and whales, how about breaking it down into newbies, users, and mods...
Looking forward to seeing what this chart looks like after the first payouts.. we have many new contributors being promoted to superusers, heroes, and mods!
Breakdown
"Whales" and "minnows" are nebulous terms and I was craving a more defined high-level view.
Here's the first attempt.
This table shows accounts grouped by log10(SP) as of 18-Jun-2016:
1 SP = 1M VESTS = 162.664 STEEM = $63.114
- SP - It's not user friendly to measure influence in inflating STEEM, nor in raw VESTS. But VESTS are the most stable unit of influence, and MVESTS are easy on the eyes. I propose that 1 SP = 1M VESTS.
- $ - approximate value of the SP (at the current feed) for reference.
- accts - number of accounts in the tier
- accts % - distribution of accounts represented in this table
- stake - collective influence owned by this tier (excludes @steemit and pending payouts)
Application
My thinking is that having such tiers will make it easier to communicate relative influence. Also, those seeking to "power up" benefit from having goalposts. Each successive level of membership/commitment would have perks such as increased maximum upload sizes, moderation/power-user tools, etc etc.
For instance, a commonly requested feature is fine-grained voting options. This makes sense for mods and supermods (1.4% of today's userbase) but would only clutter up the interface for newbies and regular users.
IMO, there's potential here in terms of improved usability, marketing, communication, and reporting. But first we need to find a common language/framework.
So if Steem Power represents a user's commitment, influence, and investment level,
What names would you use?
- How would you split it?
- What potential benefits or USP's could we offer?
I am charmed with your offer, it would give him a more animated touch and it stimulates the people to want to grow to be a "supermod", also might be added the stars of user's distinction next to the user who does the post or in the image of the person who answers to a post, like I put in the images of sample.

Great idea! These kinds of lists and status symbols motivate a lot of people. How about sticking with the aquatic theme? Whales, orcas, dolphins, big fish, little fish, minnows, krill. After all, Steem is what happens when water gets hot.

Nice! I like the idea of themes. The beauty of it is that it's essentially pure UI and any future frontends can establish their own system. With the right marketing/design the aquatic theme could work. However, it doesn't immediately resonate with me.

THIS would be the best tool by far to upsell people into powering up. Status symbol with additional perks is a genius idea.

Perhaps you could reclass the whole distribution using Fibonacci, with input of the highest & lowest account value and five resistance/support levels at any given moment you recalculate the thresholds.

Fibonacci is visually/proportionally very elegant, but when it comes to raw numbers not so much.
I'll generate the table using fib though when I get a chance. Curious how it will lay out..

I disagree with your thesis. We use Fibonacci tool every day to recalculate trading resistance/support levels for prices of 8 (eight) decimal precision, frequency of minimum 5 (five) minutes and time period of months and years.
It works fine.

All I meant was that the numbers are not as pleasant to look at as 10n, which could be important for marketing.

Keep in mind, Mods and Powermods are what are destroying reddit. There are groups that will work tirelessly to gain control of this forum.
A lot of thought needs to go into this before removing or granting powers that control users actions and abilities.

Quoting myself:
Does this make sense? "mod" and "supermod" are just display names for specific (higher) levels of commitment to the platform. I'm not proposing they have extra powers on the blockchain. This is all on the UI/UX layer. Just some perks/tools on the site perhaps -- like the reddit enhancement suite.

I've seen this idea floating around however it's really good to see the groups broken down like this.
I'd go for labels like "superhero" and "legend" instead of "mod" or "supermod"
NB - IF (and I'm not certain it's desirable) Steemit goes down the route of moderators (in the true sense), I don't think this should be based on SP only. It should be reputation based and maybe voted on (a la Witnesses). People being able to 'buy' moderation privileges is probably not a good idea.

Is this because "mod" has a stigma attached to it? That's the impression I'm getting. Thanks for the label suggestions!
Would users aspire to "superhero" and "legend" status as much as "mod"?
And there will be no mods (reddit style) besides the current Steem Power system where everyone is a mod to the extent of their vesting.

I like the idea. Most forums have a similar structure. But 'dust' for a beginner seems demeaning.

:) Anyone using the FB/reddit faucet is already a regular "newbie" or "user" under this scheme.
Dust accounts have locked up less than 60 cents' worth of STEEM. I don't think it's even possible to register a 'dust' account without mining! I think they will be very rare overall.

So whales are moderators? Sounds not good. Mods should be voted as witnesses.

Everyone on steem is a "moderator".. your powers are proportional to your SP (vests).
I'm just suggesting labels for the UI layer. Though with the feedback here I'm realizing the "moderator" label has a very negative connotation for many!

Status symbols reminds me of the 2go messenger app I used as a teenager. It was so addictive and we would spend hours trying to move to the next level. Don't like it though. Wait. Why the need for a moderator?

Engaging platforms are good! And to be clear: everyone here is a "moderator" (your "mod power" is proportional to your Steem Power). Perhaps it's a bad name for those upper tiers. I like it because people immediately understand that mods have influence.
The issue is that other platforms have given mods a bad name as of late..
