What a change in view can do to vests

in steem •  6 years ago  (edited)

A day or two ago I asked @arcange if he could indulge me with a bit of a tweak to his statistics and luckily for me, he was able to. The statistics have always shown the vested voting power which yesterday looked like this:

However, I wanted was to see the vested voting power sans Steemit incs non-voting whales but @arcange went a step further and removed all inactive accounts.

As you can see in the purple "whale" section, there is a mass of grey with the grey being:

The grey part of each column indicated unused Steem Power by inactive accounts

Active users:

So, while there is a great deal of vests in the whale accounts, out of the 35 whales who hold 52% of all SP, 17 are inactive and only 17% of the stake held is active. This is because a few of those accounts are the large Steemit accounts.

What is interesting to note is that there are.

  • 339 orcas hold 22% of the stake and 30% of the stake is inactive.
  • 2019 dolphins hold 14% of the stake and 28% of the stake is inactive
  • 28033 minnows hold 7% of the stake and 35% of the stake is inactive

What this means in vests though is that of the active stake**

  • Whales use 17%
  • Orcas use 40%
  • Dolphins use 26%
  • Minnows use 10%

This is the distribution of the pool. What this means (I think) is that because that mass of unused stake isn't voting at the whale end (Stinc for the most part) all other accounts have a much larger share of the pool beyond their staked percentage. All other classes are over-represented by stake. If that unused whale stake became active, there would be a far smaller amount in the pool for everyone else. Of course, we all know this... don't we? This is why there is that "unwritten law" about the non-usage of the ninja mine.

What I think is that once the inactive accounts are removed from the graph, we can see that there is actually a lot more parity than we imagine and due to the none voting stake, it will mean that the distribution must be moving away from the whales albeit slowly as some are still active.

I find this change in visualization very interesting, don't you think?

Thanks again @arcange!

Excellent analysis. It’s much more balanced than I thought.

I have done the top end math in my head and thought it might look that way with the whales but seeing it this way is very helpful.

I think that people that complain about reward unfairness should look at this. The whales are far less influential on the rewards pool than I thought.

Far less than anyone thought I'd say. Hope you are well mate.

Now join those accounts together by person and automated voting and see what the 'available' VESTS each day are.

I like it though, getting closer to the truth :) There are so few accounts with over a few k SP, If someone had time, they could run a full audit and include/exclude accounts based on recent actions to see if their stake had any chance of going anywhere else but to 5 friends and or 5 alts.

If someone had

on that note:

This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have.

Cool story but seems like a long-winded way of suggesting me for the task :P

Lol, I am not even one of the four that could be a body of use. Deadbody?

Yes, another story again, would a curve help ? ;)

If only someone had the time. ;P

No I don't think any curve will help very much. Traf and Kevin might distribute more freely but there will be others still competing for biggest dickhead. And then the 'well they are doing it so I am too' will start again.

Yep, someone. Someone who doesn't care if they tag the 20 largest active voting accounts on the platform and assign them a user to 'manage'. (the account below) :)

BT at the top?

:D

It also demonstrates the abilitynof communities being able to come together to influence the future of the ecosystem as well. While votes can always shift either way, a strong Dolphin or even Minnow class can mold the way things work here too!

Yep, a few dolphins and an orca or two can make a difference here in a community. Later when prices increase, quite a difference to people's accounts.

Hmmm.. This is really quite interesting and useful! It really is the active stake that is important in the reward distribution... So, yes better data is always a good thing for informed debate. Hopefully people see this and adjust their views accordingly...

Probably not :D

Lol, of course not! This is the internet after all...

So orcas are the real “movers and shakers” but dolphins are the most active voters?

It looks as if, once the inactive accounts are filtered out, minnows at least appear to be far more active in voting than redfish/plankton. But I wonder if that might be a bit of a false positive in that much of the redfish/plankton voting is dust that gets returned to the reward pool.

I don't know but there are so many dead accounts and small alts that got left by the wayside I didn't bother. I have several redfish accounts that have a few steem in them i hold for various future reasons. I have an alt @taraz that i haven't used in over a year. I am definitely not one of the active alt users on the platform ;)

minnows are active because most of them are the working class :D not enough to buy votes, or self vote and probably a lot of them earned (a big part of) their steem by posting.

Great analysis. I could not have written it better.
Thanks for the shout out.

No problem and thanks again :)

Great to have a fresh look at some 'known' numbers so next time we have a bit more nuance in the discussion :-)

I will likely come back to this later but have to run.

Will wait for a follow-up, don't trip :D

I don't run fast enough ;P

Very helpful to visualize. Thanks. Doesn't seem as unbalanced as I thought.

That really makes you think about the overall usage of the Steem blockchain and who is really using it. Though I will admit the results have me rethinking this recent spat of outrage over the whales who hold the most steem and their voting habits...

People should think a lot more about this. 17 active whales and a few of them are doing a pretty good job.

so you need 9 orcas on 1 whale. so blame orcas and whales! They took are steem

And the dolphins vote with more than the whales :D
This is what needs to happen though and it is slowly improving i reckon.

Well.... What this shows imo is that we shouldnt really be yelling at the whales, but rather at the orcas. :)
No, better yet, we should be yelling at everyone and at each other. hahaha

Interesting view I think. :)
