I stand behind my opinion that, while the execution was sloppy and left a lot to be desired, HF20 was a positive thing and gets an undeserved bad rap.

The Resource Credits are good add, and a needed one. I support the idea of making Steemit pay to play at least to a degree because we need more incentives to buy STEEM and power up.

I dislike the attitude that it's okay to take from Steemit, but somehow rude to suggest that people should put something into it, as well.

My one complaint is that the SP limit for transacting a lot on the chain is still pretty low. I'd make it even more expensive to interact with the chain with 100+ posts and comments, myself.

Great comment. I would just clarify that Steem is not becoming pay-to-play. It was stake-to-play before, and it remains stake-to-play. This is totally a semantic thing, but personally I think it's an important semantic distinction. When you pay for something, you transfer possession of money over to a 3rd party permanently in exchange for a product or service. You lose money. That's not what happens on Steem and that is a very big deal. No one is ever giving up possession of their money, nor are they sacrificing access to that money permanently. Your money remains in your possession, and yet you still gain access to products and services that leverage Steem. You get to use a product like steemit.com, busy.org, d.tube, etc. and you get access to information storage services, social media services, etc. Providing these products and services have very real costs, and those costs must be reflected in the level of stake users are required to have. This all gets back to your point that there is a very reasonable discussion to be had about just how much people should be able to do with the lowest possible level of stake.

100+ posts/comments might seem like a lot. But personally, I'm hoping we have enough front-ends that this number seems ridiculously small.

Fair point.

This is great news! I have experienced much less spam comments on my blog posts as well, so I would assume that we have roughly the same numbers for comments.

I'm being a bit picky now, but the % of reduction math is a bit off, and you can never have a number higher than 100 %, since a 100 % reduction would mean 0 spam comments. You have been using the formula for calculating an increase in percentage, which can give you higher than 100 % values.

Here's how we would calculate a percentage reduction:
P = a/b × 100
a = average amount reduced reduced (2426 - 469 = 1957)
b = average original amount

P = 1957 / 2426 x 100 = 80.6% spam reduction.

You are right. Updated post. Thanks.

Nothing against hf20, world did not end without steemit a few days, But hf20 brought a reduction in participation overall, it is noticeable in numbers and engagement so may all those numbers hopefully not be an overall decline of posts, spam or not. Are there stats for that?

It's hard to measure engagement without including spam. I notice a lot fewer interesting posts but the numbers seem to be same or higher than pre-hardfork.

Number of unique authors posting in the last 7 days: 21,774
Number of unique voters in the last 7 days: 67,229
Unique posts in 30 days? 41,996
Unique voters in 30 days? 92,610

These numbers are mid-high side of normal pre-hf20 except for unique voters in 30 days, that's a bit lower.

Yet my badcontent blacklist notifier is showing an 80%+ drop in spam.

I honestly don't know where these unique posters/voters are because they are not in my feed.

If so sounds like a good thing. And hope not to be visited by bad content bot ;)
Thanks for the numbers and stats

Just getting some goodies as instant coffee and premade for snack emergency, and they come in individual sackets, but thought of you

Nice!
Sorry, can't write longer comments because my RC is low.

How is that possible, you have almost 3,000 SP. You should have no problems.

I am bad at jokes :/
My point was that HF20 on one hand limited the number of spammers, but on the other hand it could shorten the length of comments, which may look more spammer :)

I got the joke, the small text was clear sarcasm to me.

Bad jokes. My favorite! Old and worn out jokes, even better! :D

BTW, it may shorten the comments because someone with low RC thinks it helps a lot, but it's not that big difference with a one liner comment or ten longer sentences in one comment.

Hehe, it's not easy to write sarcasm on the internet :P

must be getting political...

Hard Fork 20 has resulted in a 517% reduction in spam
According to my blacklist

Works for me.

Spam R.I.P.

It's mostly dead.

yea, sometimes I am starting to miss the comments like this

  • I vot for yu, yu vot for me
  • very nice dear
  • beautiful pictures
  • amazing

But then I realise I really do not. This is a good metric and I am happy that this has really reduced spam

And this does not include the immense comment spam we had as well.
I had a feeling that this decreased strongly as well.

The comment spammers seem to be either "vote via proxy" or larger users that do 6th day upvotes now. And they are noticeable due to a massive reduction of noise.

Yeah, my bot only goes at high-level posts. Comment spam has dropped significantly.

Hy @themarkymark,

I definitely noticed straight away that @mack-bot and @spaminator had less flagging activity. Even after the RC boost it continued, so it been pretty great so far. 😊👍

I am not surprised to see the results as I have been seeing the feed on certain tags become more manageable in addition to the immediate comments on my post becoming less common.

That is incredible!!! I'm really happy to see that down! Let's keep it clear and human friendly :)

I suppose it has an impact on spammers with very low vests but I think the devs overcorrected when they increased RC. There is a lot more spam than there was before the RC hotfix.

I have an account that upvotes/resteem good science posts and posts in the gridcoin category. It barely has any vests and it can do about 100 comments with full RC bar which it basically always stays at.

Also the reward pool isnt lying either. it's down 25% since the last peek

Hey that's great news. All thanks to Resource Credits. The reduction in spam feels quite noticeable. Let's hope this continues. These spammers are a crafty bunch.

People complain about newbies having trouble participating on the network due to the low RC (some say this isn't really true), but it's really important that spam gets squashed or new users will definitely be more likely to walk away. Spam is the most annoying thing in the world on social networks and email.

Any info on how newbies are doing with the new RC system?

most I think have been fine, those who are not have been getting support from larger users.

Great article. The numbers are impressive. That would still stop receiving messages from @badcontent. :)

Отличная статья. Цифры впечатляют. Вот бы еще перестать получать сообщения от @badcontent. :)

This is great news indeed. Btw your blacklist API is also a very useful tool for me. Thank you.

This is an awesome picture of something doing the job it was designed to do on Steemit for once! I've been encountering @badcontent a lot trolling the popular tags for mis-classified content on @tagalong, nice to see it's being useful too.

Thanks for the update @themarkymark!
