STEEM: Technical analysis: Nice recovery from downward spike on poloniexsteemCreated with Sketch.

in steem •  7 years ago  (edited)

I made this annotated screenshot about 12 hours ago, but then wasn't sure about posting it as the recovery was looking a bit iffy! But it's now just about back to where it was then.

So, I'm making this post to illustrate and discuss the downward spike on poloniex and the recovery from it (so far) -- and, because a downward spike (preferably with a lot of volume) can be a good indicator for a positive move immediately after. The volume was only moderate on the spike, but higher than it has been in typical recent trading.

Screen Shot 2017-07-12 at 05.56.51.png

I've marked the downward spike with a magenta arrow.

If this spike marks the bottom point on STEEM/BTC that we are going see for a while, then we can look at the fibonacci retrace levels, which I've marked on the graph with blue arrows - as possible targets that the price could recover to, on this bounce. Personally, I like to look for the 50% retrace level, in particular, as a good potential target.

One other indicator of note on this graph is that the 4-hour MACD is looking like it could be about to turn green (marked with a cyan arrow). [Update: it has turned green now.]

On the other hand, I'm still not liking the overall curve on that chart too much, because it's a downward curve!

Finally, lets look at the order book:
Screen Shot 2017-07-12 at 19.21.49.png
This is looking very much better than it was a week ago, because we can see it's now pretty even on each side. Of course, a large part of this is because the price has fallen very significantly during this time.

Will STEEM go up or down from here? I don't know. But these are the charts I've been looking at, to try to decide :)

Things are looking pretty good my friend. Now that some of the uncertainty with Bitcoin has been removed maybe we can unhitch that anchor we have been carrying around the last couple of weeks... blue skies ahead! :)

Thanks for your comment! Today was a good for day for steem :D No idea what tomorrow will bring, but I like your outlook! (Upvote! :) )

Oh wow, thank you! Following you now ;)

"can be a good indicator for a positive move immediately after."
I agree with you..

May also wait for a double bottom, but my point of view, the recovery was over..

Yes.... and great comment. It was a nice looking formation imo - but lack of volume and that sharp downward curve means I think either a lower low or double bottom could be what to look for next as a buying opportunity.
Many thanks!

For now we have to wait as bictoin again above the critical support 2263.00 !!

Checking out now... :)

Thank you @xaero1, but sorry, I want to ask, why in these few days, I do not see your post posting, are you busy in a few days

Busy, yes.... trading opportunities right now, no time to post! ;)

I hear you, reading charts is very difficult, and if any one tells you that it is easy they might be crazy. Charts are easy to look at after the fact, but in real time can be a little tricky

Wowwwww very amaizing..
Your post is very nice

Cheers :)

yep, Your post is very good
Can i be as good as you @xaero1

No...I am completely serious!

First, I could not write poetry to save myself (think 'Vogon poetry' from the 'the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy' (you can look it up ;) ) - and second, you can also accompany your post with a beautiful picture of yourself! :)

Yeah, I think it's over until Friday...doesn't it seem like every Friday we have a correction?

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

The charts are not looking too happy today....could be 'blood on the streets' time next :(. But if so, that's a great short term trading opportunity. ETH, in particular looks to me like it might be close to becoming a bit tasty looking!

But in answer to your question, perhaps you are right...my recollection is actually that recently Friday through Saturday are normally more positive that other days. But at this point re. market sentiment, i think it's anyone's guess.

So your TA was on spot ! and maybe we even see a pump due to polo disabled wallets on Steem (AGAIN) , well done! 👌

Hiya, thanks!!

It's a bit out of date now, but it's still holding in the sense that we have not gone lower than that poloniex spike down I pointed out. But if we don't go lower, then I personally will be hoping for steem to get back to up to 50% retrace line marked on that chart. I should post updated version, but the current chart is looking quite positive right this minute I'd say. This is not trading advice of course, just what I'd like to see to improve my bank balance! ;)

I am too old and stubborn for trading advices no worrys , plus always trade by your own responsibility we aren't a kids playground 😉 But yeah Steem holded very well !
From the other hand the problem with steem is when i buy the dip i have hard time to self for profit, just taking my capital back and stockpile some more !

Very good analysis @xaero1. I personally thinkbthe market got a great shock and it also depends pn what bitcoin is undergoing right now. Provided that on august 1 all being well we could very well see steem reaches 3 to 5us.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Thanks for your comment!

I find it really interesting that something like 9/10 replies are mentioning this august 1st thing. Not sure what that implies, but it must be a good indicator of something! I understand it could have an impact on bitcoin - but if either there is no split, or if segwit gets activated before then via segwit2x...then it should be positive I would expect. But I'm just not sure that a negative scenario would have that much of an impact on the alt-coins - but, we may well soon see!

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Correction is Over bro! Nice analysis!

I think will go up :D

Thanks very much. We shall see :)

The downward curve doesn't look good.

This is true. I think one possibility is we get another slightly lower low but by that point the curve has started to turn, and so is decending more gently. Another possibility is a double bottom, which would also cause the decending curve to flatten out.

Well I wouldn't be surprised if the price will go down, but of course I'm hoping it would go up :) Nothing to worry though, even if the price goes down, it's perfect time to buy.

Cool & thanks for your comment.

I think this rise in price was just people investing into the market while coins were cheap.
I think in the coming weeks the price will keep decreasing until 1st August but I guess we will have to wait and see.
Thank you for your astounding clear graph!

Thanks very much!

Thanks very much for your kind comment.

all recovered very quickly !! that's good :D

Well, nice bounce at the very least today. I'm not complaining :D

Keep falling,bGreat harvest lol @xaero1

Haha... love that description - harvest! I was harvesting some profits myself, from ETH, today :)

hahahaha Keep watch and we wait for more info master @xaero1 lol

Lol indeed ...haha ;)

Any info why sbd keep going down master @xaero1?

I expect this is because people are panic selling!
But logically they shouldn't, because if the system works correctly, then SBD should eventually be expected to trade around $1 again (once the panic is over!)
This is because the wallet provides a 'convert to STEEM' menu option which should give you around $1's worth of steem in 3.5 days time from when you request the conversion.

But you can read more about this here:
https://steemit.com/faq.html#Will_1_Steem_Dollar_always_be_worth__1_00_USD

So, I personally would never sell SBD for much less than $1, but instead just wait for it to return to roughly this value...or else use the 'convert' function.

I also dont sell, it has been a week more the price down. of course many are panicked. thanks for the advice master @xaero1 ,i will be patient a little more

Greats analysis

I'm new here... I don't even know what the effect of that is? :)

But I agree, no point in just adding cheesy comments... this was an attempt at purely a technical post.

Hahahaha this is chaos, I like this post lol @xaero1 girls are sending you their photos? Sorry. I'm kind of just randomly replying to comments.

Lol, my fault for giving people upvotes :)

Btw, my other type of posts are meme type things if you hadn't noticed ;)

This is was I mean though when I say that I'm not here for my writing skills ;)

Oh: just thought: if you have been away from civilisation for perhaps the last seven years, you may not be up on 'Game of thrones' references?! ;)

@xaero1, yeah I'm not really into memes so I kind of just letting is roll on my feed lol, but these days I figured out it's time to educate myself about crypto so that's how I landed on this post. I'll probably post about my big regret while I was out and away from this 'civilization'. When I didn't listen to this guy who first told me about btc the first time. That was 3 years ago when i was in a nice beach. I was like bit what to him??? Nevermind. So I was out there amusing myself in places nature and stuff lol.

Yeah, I was not even following Game of Thrones, lol. So I'm also letting it pass. I just came back to the world. ;)

Haha... nice! Well, you could buy the box set and start from series 1.....but yeah may well not be quite to your taste! (Lots of violence, plus quite a lot of, well, sexploitation, you could say....but that applies equally to the male characters ... you'd really have to watch it to see ;) )

Haha... :)

market was down maybe because of ICO cashing out ether for salary or office stuff , plus uncertainty about bitcoin,
we may see some upward trend then we wait for bitcoin fork

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

TBH, I think anything that goes up a huge amount is always going to retrace downwards at some point, whatever. There's always going to be people wanting to cash out their profits... and this only stops when equilibrium is reached again between buyers and sellers.

Good work!

Thank you

The cryptocurrency bubble is brewing. with 952 currencies out there, a redefinition is imminent.

But we just had a bubble didn't we? Although, it's possible it's not finished...

Believe me this is not the bubble. the bubble when it comes would send most of the cryptos especially the "funny coins" into oblivion. There are 952 coins out there with many not having a specific use or function but just to catch the trend of the crypto growth and for the initiators to make money. Most of the prices currently are being driven by speculators as against real value and use when they start cutting their loses and taking profit, a domino effect would result and further fall in prices would result and fast.
we must be careful in the choice of coins we by and hold in the mid to long term.

Very good comment, I agree. Thanks!

Sbd start up master @

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Steem and SBD are completely different things though!

SBD should normally be worth around $1. Once the market panic is over I would expect it to return to be roughly this value at least.

Nice analysis! Thanks!

Thanks very much.

I like your post @xaero1

LOL. okay this is random... but if you flip the last graph over and look at the white space, doesn't it look like it could be a white palace.... what does that mean? Maybe it means that Steem will go up and we will all be able to buy big white palaces?

haha but disclaimer... don't take my analysis when making trading decisions. :P

Lol at 'white palace' + that disclaimer :D

:0) haha the sign is literally in the picture! I think you posted the graph upside down. :P

good post @xaero1
Good science to me

Thanks!

@xaero1 nice analysis. But nothing can be said with certainty before 1st August, I think.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

I don't think anything can be said with certainty at any time! ;)
But thanks :)

Really interesting, thanks for your comment!

But from reading that, it sounds like each witness sets their own interest rate? I wonder how that works then in practice... what's the global rate you get, given each witness's setting can be different?!

Also that witness seems to imply it's an increase, therefore I'm guessing maybe his setting was 0% before? ;) Also suggested was that it would likely be a temporary measure...

But thanks....I will follow more of the witnesses to get this type of info.

Yes you are right

SBD Interest Rate

Witnesses set the interest rate that users will get for holding SBD. A higher interest rate will encourage more users to buy/hold SBD, but this will also increase the amount of SBD in existence. This is another parameter that witnesses have differing views on, and understanding what witnesses are setting it to + why, is a good way to evaluate different witnesses. The value is shown as "APR" on the steemd.com witness page.

Great.. thanks for that info! :)

BTC and ETH will dump even more, once all those new and inexperienced investors that joined this year will freak dump whatever they have got left.
I am looking forward to it so I can buy in cheap again :-)

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

I agree, from the charts it would not be surprising to me to expect a lower bottom at some point after this one (but when, I'm not sure ;) )

Hello! Apart from poloniex what other house of change is recommended? I'm new here :-)

Do you already have BTC? For BTC/fiat trading, some of the best ones for liquity I know are coinbase/gdax, bitfinex, Kraken, bitstamp, Gemini....but if you don't have USD or aren't able to access those because they don't serve your country, I guess you would need to find some other local exchange in order to get BTC.

Once you have BTC, then probably the main exchanges to get hold of steem are:
Blocktrades: accessed simply, via the steem wallet; you just need click on 'the buy steem/steem power' button and it will take you to the site.
Poloniex: used to have the best liquity, but is pretty useless right now since steem withdrawals are disabled
Bittrex: very good Exchange and I would recommend.

I haven't tried blocktrades myself because I like to use a traditional exchange because I can see the liquidity. But I guess it might be the simplest way to get steem if you aren't needing to buy very large amounts! Hope this helps.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Thanks @xaero1 then bittrex is the best option in my case, ie, for small amounts

Im not to sure either. I guess we will find out after August 1st

Personally I wouldn't have thought that would have much impact on the price of STEEM, but we shall see.

Good analysis. I think I should keep a wait and watch policy till 1st Aug.

Okidoke!

@xaero

Thanks!

Thank for the info @xaero1, now that I'm jobless lol I'm thinking of getting into bitcoin trade, but still confused about the charts. I guess I have to study this technical analysis and stuff.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Hi @diabolika,

I wrote a really long reply and deleted it :). my short answer is that market conditions are not so favourable right now; my personal view is to expect a correction which lasts a while; but I could be wrong, so I don't want to advise you to do the wrong thing either and put you off!

Non-specific answer: Suppose you think of the crypto world as a sea with waves constantly rolling in. Now, in the first half of this year a giant tsunami wave rolled in! A wave so big that no-one had ever seen that magnitude before! Anyone who was able to surf that wave, and fortunate enough to be at the right place at the right time (as i was lucky enough to be), was able to make some amazing gains in capital value. However, every wave has two sides, and I think it's pretty clear from any chart that we've been on the downward slope of the wave for a bit. This means in practice, that last month you might have experienced loosing half your capital, rather than gaining many multiplies of your capital as was the case earlier in the year (certainly my capital has gone down probably over $150k just because of steem power)!

But was that the only tsunami wave we are going experience right now with current crypto earthquake? ;) Or, will another one roll in? Personally I would lean to towards a longer lasting correction with the ocean slowly calming, but other people are predicting even greater increases in crypto by the end of the year.

But as a trader I am not too disheartened with the current downturn, because at the top of a wave I will try to sense that and convert crypto back into USD; then at the bottom of the wave i will convert back in the hope of riding the next wave up (even if it is a lot smaller) :)

So, trading can be a very time consuming and difficult thing to do. In the first half of this year it wasn't; every single thing went up greatly in value (even joke coins like 'pepecash'!), but that was an exceptional period (I would say like the dot com bubble). But if that wave has finished and we don't see another one, one might be just as likely to lose money than make money unless you spend large amounts of time and effort and know what to do.

However, the alternative to trading is long term investing..and so called 'dollar cost averaging'. Just keep buying a small amount at regular intervals, in anticipation of either steady growth or another big wave at some point in the future.

Another option is to try to research very carefully what to buy. Even in a market which might be falling or level, there will always be some things that rise up. Needless to say, my currently favourite thing is steem power, so I've been concentrating on that - and have been selling everything else ;) This is because I believe increasing user numbers could lead to appreciation in value, whatever the rest of the market is doing. But there are still plenty of ICOs which will come up, some of which could still prove very lucrative if you can research and choose the right one.

Hmmm, looks like i wrote another long answer after all! ;)
Not sure if that helped... anyway please don't be put off - crypto is revolutionary and I believe it is the future!

@xaero1, I really appreciate this in-depth explanation about trading, especially now that I'm thinking of buying more btc.

So, trading can be a very time consuming and difficult thing to do.

I noticed that I got to wait and have some patience, so to a noob like me, it can be pretty scary huh, as I have no idea yet if I will lose or gain some money in this trade. Or if cryptocurrency will just suddenly dissolve. So you mean to say, I''ll just wait for the next big wave? And here I am impatiently waiting for the right time.

However, the alternative to trading is long term investing..and so called 'dollar cost averaging'. Just keep buying a small amount at regular intervals, in anticipation of either steady growth or another big wave at some point in the future.

Yeah, I won't put large amount of my money but I'll see how it goes. It's pretty new and interesting to me, I guess I'll put more time in learning the 'tricks of the trade'.

If you can give me some easy online resources about crypto trade or about learning technical analysis, that would be really helpful.

Thanks a lot!

One other thing to mention is that if you are still bullish on bitcoin, then right around now might well be a good time buy, because it corresponds to a classic 'buy the dip' situation (if you believe the trend is still up).

A simple way that I sometimes think about whether something is good value is to compare the current price with the peak. I will typically think to myself if something is 50% of the price it was at its peak then, well, maybe that's a good deal (relatively)..and moreover maybe it's close to the point it could bounce.
Bitcoin is current at 66% of it peak, so that's 'a reasonable' deal on this basis, ethereum is less than 50% of its peak so that is a better deal - however ethereum had a mega bubble, so we should expect the correction to be much deeper. Any finally a quick mention of STEEM POWER (my favourite and only remaining big investment right now!) - that's around 35% of its peak - so I'm really hoping for a rebound on that soon!

Also, while I personally think we may have seen the top of the crypto bubble for a while, right now I'm crazily trying to figure out the best point to buy back into BTC and ETH, because I'm certain we will see a nice and very profitable bounce somewhere around or a bit lower than their current valuations (though I might well sell again after!)

In fact, if you are interested (tips of what not to do!) I wasted about $10k today, just trying to 'catch the falling knife' as they say, I.e. Buy at the the bottom of the current dip. I did not succeed, and in fact got pretty lacerated! But I plan to continue with this strategy, undeterred ;), for the rest of this week as I'm pretty a 'bounce' is right around the corner!

That's a very long but informative explanation, I am sure you will succeed. I thought forex was already too complicated and the cryptocurrency seeem like on a different level . will keep learning from your post, just recently add some SP , although it isn't much.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Crypto is like 'taking candy from a baby' compared to forex imho ;)
Of course you can still lose your shirt...but right now I'd say there are patterns that keep repeating - and as long as they keep repeating, they can be predicted!

Good on you for adding some SP! 😀👍
Edit: I.e., just like with bitcoin, 'holders' are required to maintain the price level, and the price level is what determines how much money can be paid out for posts :)

I see. and l believe the patterns r going to repeat. :)

👍This is how I trade: Believe in patterns, and so far they keep repeating 😀

Wow you're such a geek in this, it's a complement btw. Yes I know this is the good time to buy, but I'm still worried. Everyone is atm I guess.

Any finally a quick mention of STEEM POWER (my favourite and only remaining big investment right now!) -

I gonna have to understand about the steem power and probably I should invest in it.

I appreciate this really detailed explanation and it surely educated me about crypto. Last night I was spending some time learning about technical analysis but fell asleep lol. I will try again tonight.

Yeah I 'll take your word for that 'pretty bounce' around the corner. Thanks!

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Have a look at https://steemit.com/faq.html for information about
Steem dollars (SBD)
Steem, and
Steem power
They are three different things.

If you don't want to be subject to market volatility and do not care about effectively being an investor in the platform, then SBD is the best thing to hold, because it should always be worth roughly at least one dollar.

If you want to have influence in the steemit project and effectively be an investor, them steem power is the thing to hold. The more steem power you have, the more money your upvotes provides. This applies to posting and curation, and you also earn some interest while you hold it. The drawback is you can only cash out if you need to, over a three month period. So this means that during a down turn like we've been having, you are pretty stuck and can't sell (this is the case for me). Doesn't matter though if you didn't plan to sell anyway! :)

Steem is like steem power, but just isn't locked up. But the drawback is that you don't get any of the above benifits. Main point of steem is for buying, selling and exchanging. When you convert between steem and steem power, it's called powering up/powering down depending which direction you are converting.

Powering up/down and converting between steem and SBD can all be done via operations provided by the wallet.

Yes, I've been already doing the trading of steem through the internal market, I guess I was just thinking, if i just keep sbd, or change it to steem straightaway, since it's very cheap at the moment. And then just keep the steem here in my account until it's ok to change again.

Would there be any problems with that? Are people still continuously converting their steems to btc now, even if it's low.

If you believe steem is now at a cheap price and expect it go up, then converting SBD to steem (and/or powering it up) makes sense, and yes - just holding steem in your wallet is the best place to keep it :)

Should you convert steem to BTC? Only depends whether you'd rather be investing/holding/speculating on steem or BTC! :)

Is it save to use Poloniex finally? :)

I don't have any information about it being unsafe.
However, instead, right now, it is completely useless!!
Basically, yet again they suspended deposits/withdrawals for steem
:( I have some steem now trapped trapped there which I can't widthdraw and power up :(

So, the simple answer to you question, I would suggest, is: use bittrex instead :)

The bittrex's fee is unbeliveable high but I guess I will use it for now. Thank you for the answer :)

I have some steem now trapped trapped there which I can't widthdraw and power up ?

Sorry I have to interrupt here lol

Really @xaero1? One more noob question, is it ok for me to just store the steem here, and wait until its price is high again? That's an investment too right...

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Yes, storing steem in your wallet is always the best course of action. In my case I always power it up, since that's why I buy it. You should only have steem on an exchange while you need to buy/sell it....because there's always the risk an exchange can get hacked / take your money / stop processing withdrawals / whatever :)

What about put steem in my savings?

Actually I have no idea what that does!
As I never hold steem (only steem power) it's not very relevant to me.
Maybe there's something in the FAQ about it..

I don't know if steem will go up or down either.

Haha... :)

There are arguments for and against in this case. To me that formation is pretty bullish from experience, except that the spike didn't have huge volume. If it had huge volume, I might be less on the fence about it :)
