Steembay Auction - obsolete paper money • Silver Certificate & U.S. Notes $11

in steembay •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hey Steemians... I've got some more old worn-out "non-crypto" currency that I'm offering up right here for auction!

The four notes are a bit soiled and heavily folded so these are considered low grade and are thus of minimal numismatic value. That being said, they are kinda “cool”!

CURRENCY2 A.jpg

These are all kinda delicate but they can still be handled. Click on any image for an enlargement.

CURRENCY2 B.jpg

There is no tape or signs of repair on any of them.. all are together with no tears except for that small split developing on the bottom edge of the $5.

CURRENCY2 C.jpg

They are:

• $2 United States Note - Series 1953
• $2 United States Note - Series 1953 A
• $2 United States Note - Series 1953 B
• $5 Silver Certificate - Series 1953 A

Note the lack of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST of the $5 note. This was added in 1963.

BLUE SEAL Silver Certificates represented and could be redeemed for silver dollars that were deposited in the U.S. Treasury.

The RED SEAL $2 United States Notes represented... nothing! That's 'cause United States Notes were the original fiat currency produced by the USA as a Federally issued note beginning and during the War Between the States in 1861.

I'm a currency fan, not that I own much, but I've long had an appreciation for the artwork of currency. I especially like American currency, the silver certificates, the United States Notes and currency from the 19th century from the many, many banks that issued them.

I can't help but reminded that we're kind of returning to a time of multiple currencies again. In the 19th century, there were more than 7,000 banks, with many of them issuing their own currency, all based on a standard measure of a dollar based on gold or silver. We're sort of seeing the same thing now with more than 1,000 digital currencies, all vying for our business.

@digitalfirehose Absolutely... i've been sayin' the same thing to people. I love the the forms of money that we've had... The fine steel engravings of the American Bank Note Co. and the early U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing are stunning and engrossing. I've got a collection of the souvenir card re-prints that the BEP prints up for collectors.. maybe i should scan em and share.

@orionsbeltbuckle how can I get in contact with you privately?

steemit chat... or you can email me [email protected]

or just paste your address into the memo of the SBD transfer.

If you type "# " with a space before your text, it will be hidden from public, but I'll see it.

I collect $2 and have never seen any bills this old in circulation. My favories are the 1976 bicentennial $2 bills. Yours is the first auction I've seen on Steemit!

If you look at your more recent $2 notes (Series 1995 on) you can see that the reverse design, although basically identical, is actually a completely re-engraved plate.. with a much more dynamic range of values.

Whether magnified or not, you can clearly see that the newer notes have much more light areas and are only heavy in the smallest little dark areas. I was studying these closely just the other day... totally different lines on the 1976 vs. 1995+. Maybe I ought to prepare a separate post to illustrate what I'm babblin' about... 😄

But just hold the two (i'm assuming you have some newer ones) side-by-side. The '76s look very dark and flat.

These old United States Notes (Red Seals) from pre-1967 are still out there if you ask around at various banks. My son was doing this and found these and many others. The reverse design with Monticello and the free-flowing framework are awesome.. although as a John Trumbull fan I am partial to the bicentennial type.

I have a pair of Series 1928 which have a different look... darker, smaller head of Jefferson, seal is on the Left side... lots of interesting but subtle differences.
