Have you ever started something...only to "restart" multiple times?
Well, that's been my relationship with coding on the steem blockchain. It is still one my major goal of 2018 but somehow, life got in the way and got distracted for a couple months.
There seem to be a "hump" in the learning curve where once you can actually DO interesting with what you learn, the hump is over. It's like juggling in a way...once you know how to do a simple cascade, things are much more fun...but before that, it's a real pain in the butt.
Here I will chronicle some of the strategies that I'm taking to speed up my learning as well as an interesting project that might interest some of you.
Calling a Friend

He recently went freelance and we've been talking about possible projects involving the Blockchain. But for now, he agreed to be my coding tutor and to help me shorten my learning curve to start developing on the Steem Blockchain.
Week by week, I'm going to share what he is helping me with and how fast I'm making progress at making my first steem app. Also, once I'm far enough into the process, I believe I'll be in a better position to share HOW one actually get the simplest of apps online.
I believe that by having someone to be accountable to, it will help me stay on the horse, give me some accountability and keep me from being distracted by shiny objects.
The DevPortal is Useless For Beginners
Don't get me wrong, https://developers.steem.io keeps getting better and better. The team is really doing a good job at creating a resource for thousands of devs to get started...BUT if you are just getting started with JS and Node, the chasm seems HUGE.

Congrats on getting back on the horse. I drifted away from your posts as you moved into the gaming realm. I appreciate that from a business/economic standpoint on STEEM but it isnt my cup of tea on a personal level. The last time I serious played was on an Atari 2600. LOL
It is good to see you getting back on the horse. There are so many opportunities on STEEM, I look forward to seeing what content you end up creating. Whatever it is, I will support it since I want to see as many STEEM projects take off.
I am getting close to being a full time Steemian. Hopefully I can make that work out in the next two months or so. Will find out about something later this month that might assist me.

It would be great to have access to some sort of guide I could use particularly regarding Steem, but coding in general is one of the skills I most want to develop because the world will be run in code more and more as time goes by. It is surely a skill worth having.

Coding is tough, especially at the beginning. But the key is perseverance. Constantly in coding, and tech in general, you’ll run into problems. The key to getting good is solving the problem yourself. Don’t ask for help. Google away. Read away. Learn non-stop. Just don’t ever ask for help. You might want to explain the problem to a stuffed animal to get your thoughts straight, but don’t explain it to a person that can solve it for you.
Every problem you encounter but don’t solve for yourself is an opportunity to learn and get better that you were too lazy to take advantage of.

Coding is something I have always been interested in but have never taken the time to learn. I really should remedy that at some point. My son is learning programming in school and I recently took a workshop to learn about exposing my own students to coding in class. I actually posted all about it last week. They are able to learn these skills using Ozobots. It is super cool. As for starting things over and over. It seems that happens to me all the time. The world is full of distractions when you have work and kids and responsibilities.

Recently went back to coding, but it really wasn't to build anything for me, I was just knowledge hunting.
OH my, Javascript is brain energy consuming, each step is more difficult than the next. A mentor to report back to sounds like a good idea for consistency, I'll try that...

There are some great step by step Tutorials published by other users.

Ha, I started a couple of times with some python stuff on the blockchain, to get frustrated and stop again ;) My approach would be a bit different, first get comfortable in python (in your case Node.js and js) before starting to dive into something as complex as the blockchain... Good luck, going to follow your journey! You might inspire me to build my own app one day :D
