Now that Steemit happily hosts our images. Instead of dragging and dropping images, is there an API that I could use to upload images?
If not, do you know any reliable image hosters that offer an upload API?

It has to be possible. Maybe check out the condenser codebase to see how it's done here when you drag and drop.
