The primary purpose of the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is to translate machine-readable identifiers, such as Ethereum addresses, into human-readable names.
The Web is a decentralized domain where anyone can buy, own, and manage their own domain name; move it from one host to another as needed; and have complete control and ownership of all underlying data. It started as a DNS-based system. But how does a distributed Web3 naming service work? The community has shown great interest in ENS, a new name service built on Ethereum. The Ethereum Name Service is a Web3 blockchain system that allows users to set their own memorable usernames.
ENS therefore intends to provide a solution that complements DNS by using Ethereum smart contracts to manage domain name registration and resolution. This service allows you to assign a single name to all wallet addresses and decentralized websites (DWebs). For example, "alex.eth" allows wallet addresses to be recognized and quickly located in a distributed environment.
