The Schindler's Factory is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Kraków.

If it were not for the famous film by Steven Spielberg "Schindler's List", probably this place would be known only to Cracovians and history enthusiasts.

Thanks to the film, the factory was made famous throughout the world.

Krak's stronghold is in the heart of every Pole.

The factory in the Podgórze district of Krakow was founded in 1937 by three Jewish entrepreneurs

At the outbreak of the war, the production plant was in decline and was taken over by the German entrepreneur Oskar Schindler, who created the German Enamelware Factory here (the so-called Emalia).

It operated until 1945, and enamelled vessels were produced there, and later also scales and fuses for artillery and aerial shells. In production, Oskar Schindler originally employed mainly Poles, but after the creation of the Krakow ghetto, he also began to accept Jews on a large scale. After the liquidation of the ghetto, Schindler created a sub-camp of the Płaszów labor camp at the factory, and the Jews employed in it lived next to the factory, not in the camp, where the living conditions were much more difficult.

During the selection of persons assigned to work in the Schindler factory, he chose mainly those who could be considered unable to work in the camp, and thus sentenced to death, in other words children, women, the elderly and not physically fit men.

As a result, in 1944, over 1,000 people worked in the factory in Podgórze.

At the beginning of 1945, when the Germans were preparing to evacuate, the sub-camp in Emalia was liquidated. Schindler moved production to Brunnlitz (today in the Czech Republic), and bought the Jews working for him and deported from Krakow, thus saving their lives.

The film

The film caused interest in Poland. Many tourists began to visit Krakow to look for places connected with both history and the activities of the film crew of Steven Spielberg. Pictures for Schindler's List were shot, among others in Kasina Wielka, Olkusz, Niepołomice, Oświęcim-Brzezince and Skarżysko-Kamienna, but most of them were established in Kraków.
