Es el halcon Peregrino (Falco peregrinus), el animal más veloz de la Tierra. No hay animal tan rápido como el halcón peregrino. Cuando persigue a sus presas en picado puede llegar a alcanzar los 300 Km por horas o incluso hasta más.
Cuando el peregrino localiza a sus presas, otras aves, en ocasiones a varios kilómetros de distancia, cierra las alas y se deja caer en picado, acelerándose para atraparla en el aire antes de que tenga alguna posibilidad de esconderse. También en el halcón es proverbial su vista. En la escritura jeroglífica la forma de su ojo significaba «ver».
Su longitud corporal varía entre 35 y 50 cm y su envergadura es de entre 83 y 113 cm, siendo las hembras mayores que los machos. Cría en salientes rocosos, costados de roca o acantilados, en todos los continentes salvo la Antártida.
Es un ave que se ha adaptado a la vida en grandes ciudades, como se ha comprobado en Madrid y Nueva York.
