For fucks sake you are bankrupting the term racist! The people writing the search algorithms are not sitting there in SS uniforms reading mein Kampf, they obviously need some guidance and education but to state the internet is racist based on that is just fucking ridiculous!

@Kevkong, it isn't "fucking ridiculous". Firstly, I can relate with this article over 50%. Often times, its hard for me to come by black pictures on the sites mentioned in the post. And I am glad about the post because such occurrence bothers me alot. Even on google, when searching for what have you and you aren't well detailed, it brings out "White" first. Maybe you haven't observed well, if you do, the truth will reveal itself to you. Racism hasn't died yet, blacks are still the "other". Since, I have also thought-alike with the article and others can relate with it too. I don't think it's fucking ridiculous, personally. The purpose of the article is even empowerment for black-skinned. (Through the project suggested)

It was an interesting read for me.

@mimy Not saying it wasn't interesting. I agree with the problem of white biased photographic information but is this racist? My point is that the term racist should be used for describing racial hatred and serious crimes against any people of a certain race, creed or colour etc... I'd just call call this a lack of education and a bias driven by commerce and trends.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Okay. Seems we have come to an agreement on the issue of the sideline . It's okay too if you want to tag it as "bias driven by commerce". Nice sharing idea with you @Kevkong

thanks for answering this thread.....I have a habit of kind of stirring up things.

Wondering if the internet is racist is definitely like opening a can of worms.

But I love the idea of a united creative commons gallery for everyone.

I typed 'white man' and 'white woman' into pixabay and a lot of Asians came up, the Internet isn't racist.

@stellabelle I wonder if it's really deliberate racism, or if it's the way that the pictures are marked up. I've noticed that when I do a google search, and I input something like "science fiction clubs" I get a lot of results that are neither science fiction nor clubs. I think that might be the markup in the descriptions that people put up. A programmer friend of mine does SOE (Search Engine Optimization) work and he tweaks things a million times to get it right.

As to whether there are decent pictures of black people, I must assume that there are. It's just that we aren't seeing them. Also, people are using their cell phone cameras. Some cell phone cameras aren't made to take great pictures.
As for taking a great picture, I'd suggest being in natural lighting (Outdoors) because sunlight provides the best lighting for everyone. You don't need a camera, and you seem more like yourself.
I hope that this helps in some small way.

at this point, it's just important that this gets fixed and because we can do this, it can be done!

I think reason for wrong search 'black man' is because i think this frase is considered as insult. So maybe try to search african-american or african instead. I think that elites are not racist and they promote our world to mix races together so they can unite our world in one world government. When a white men search in youtube frase interracial couples they mostly get white man and black women or asian women couple even if most of mixed couples are black man and white women. So they commercialise that. Mixed couples in the movies., cartoons, magazines, tv, everywhere. I live in country where theu are slmost all white before 20 years and some girls wanted to marry with black man even they didn't saw any in their life. It's commercial from media so i don't think that they are racist. They are against racism.

good point.

Thank you belle, i just tried to google african american and most of pictures are true african americans and 1 Donald Trump lol

yeah, thanks....so I found the same thing....this was probably a bias on my part...
I still think there can be a lot done to add different kinds of people to stock photos...

I guess part of the reason i wrote this is to show one angle, and then let others fill in the gap of my lack of understanding...

Yes we can do a lot more!

As for taking a great picture, I'd suggest being in natural lighting (Outdoors) because sunlight provides the best lighting for everyone.

Just avoid direct sunlight, and preferably shoot when cloudy overhead skies, and/or make use of shades and reflectors. Softboxes and umbrellas are good substitute for natural light when indoors.

Wow! Now I know why photo studios are designed like that.
Would try this from now on...

I am really not sure this is a smart move at all...accidentally I have recently read similar stuff with Google Image Search and people looking for stuff like "european history people" and now they suspect anti white racism...Plus, the question "is the Internet racist" sounds pretty silly, don't you think?

Damn it is 2017 how comes that people are still racist the world and all the countries have become multicultural I don't understand this people I am a German and my wife is from Mauritius can't wait to see the child we gonna make.
SAY NO TO RACISM
ⓁⓄⓥⒺ & ⓁⒾⒼⒽⓉ

You are right but i think china asia, sub africa won't accept multicultural mixing. I think at this moment europe is most acceptable for mylticulturslism and welcoming people from everywhere to join them.

Yes you are right Asia don't accept multicultural mixing but some African countries do like Nigeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Tanzania and for sure South Africa.

Maybe because they were colonised but there is still racism in our world.

Yes that is true but in Nigeria they are very friendly to white people this I can say from my own experience. But anyway nobody should be racist we are all humans and the skin color don't matter.
Have a nice day ⓁⓄⓥⒺ & ⓁⒾⒼⒽⓉ

That's nice to hear!

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

@winvideos you have to do your homework well before your comment. @danyelk point is more valid. Do you stay in Europe? have you been to all Asian and Sub African countries?

We have many steemians from south africa. Maybe you should ask them. First try with kiligirl post https://steemit.com/travel/@kiligirl/day-4-in-paris-for-team-beck-notre-dame-the-musee-d-orsay-and-le-marais

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Your comment is totally unwise and uneducated. You judge out of ignorance!!!!!!!! where did apartheid come from and who did it? including mass shooting of children demonstrating against apartheid and racism? which people did mass killing and slavery for many years -including wiping out the American Indian population- who did it? which people are guilty of mass murder in 1st and second world war and the use of Nuclear bombs to wipe out humanity....where did it come from and who used it? where did systematic racism come from and who use it? you have to do your home work before writing something. I never said that anyone is better than the other but your comment is way out of reality!!!

We should improve our world.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

@winvideos my comment is not meant to attack you or anyone but to remind you that Europeans are not as welcoming as you think !!! you seem to believe what you see on TV and read on papers hence why I referred you to history.

I agree

This is a good project I better try to edit some pictures to post.Im not a good photo editor but this is a good way to enhance my ideas with photo editing .I must tell this good news to my group of invites that steemit is not all about blogging but its also about photo creativity :)

This is something we never thought about, like it has been done with a proper planning. And good to see that the idea came from a white lady.
#Respect

I think it accurately represent the unrealistic standards of beauty that society has, but all for changing this!

great great great! hope you get this working, be so cool to have video, audio and pictures all IPFS! :) congrats on the idea, will certainly look at nomad pictures more when we are on the road to do more portrait photography for sure.

@stellabelle - it is also here in Austria still a big problem. Since the refugee crisis even more, because a lot of people are afraid, that the refugees can take something away from them. Well, some locals are different and really engaged, they help and try to involve everybody. Perhaps we should start see human beeings not just black or white or red or yellow, but COLOURFUL.

By the way I painted YOU colourful here

Hope you like it! Please let me know! Thanks, Martin

good to remind.

nice post

You nailed the issue correctly...Lets use steem blockchain to make it right!!!! you have my support and upvotes

Could we had this one to the photo stock library? (As a Black or white woman? Can be both I think...) Haha. #savedollarbills

I just learned how to create gif, and I'm having a lot of fun doing it. :D

Cheers! <3

is this Gif on giphy.com?

I used Giphy and your Youtube video to make it. But I think it wasn't kept on Giphy, as I didn't upload or put any tag to it. Why? Do you want me to create a new one? :D

This is a cool idea, and a very interesting problem that you point out. Do you know about the art-services project?

no what is that?

It's an initiative for steemians to use each other's art and pics and writings for posts, rather than go to random sources. So if you would like to allow others to use your pics or whatever, use the tag, and then write any requirements you have (like mentioning or linking back, etc.) It was started by @inquiringtimes with input from @juliakponsford; and @artsygoddess helped w/the art discord server. It's new, so still growing, but I think it's a great initiative.

No al racismo todos somos iguales 😘😍

As you grow older, you’ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it—whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash”.
You don't fight racism with racism, the best way to fight racism is with solidarity.

The best way to fight racism is not to make race an issue at all.

Now I know why I can't find my black people on internet :) Never really put much thoughts into it. I always thought, not much pictures of our black brothers. I'm a photography lover but sadly a bad photographer. I own a crop DSLR. It'll be amazing to learn how to edit professionally as I see most image I shot ends up looking so dull when I see it. Thank you.

great post thanks for sharing

I wonder why those sites you mentioned is giving the results it is, but it is sites that I have never used. If I do the same for black man on Google image, I do get photos of black men and on number 28 I see Donald Trump??? If I do a search for white man on Google image the 5th photo is a black man. But we just get out what is put in, we will have to look at it deeper, to see what tags were used etc.
Thanks for sharing and good idea to improve things!!

Well, the point is, that we don't use Google Images to create Steemit posts....most of us use those free sites, and believe me, i have searched for them....there are not that many black people shown working on computers. This post only talks about one thing: stock photo libraries.

This is an eye opener. I have wondered why whenever i typed in black people picture on google, i get black background to reflect my keyword and in most cases, White are added to the picture with same background. So i was wondering, could it be a keyword problem.

But with what you wrote above, i think its more than keywords. I wish i know a bit of photography to explore on this topic more.

Thanks for the insight.

Great post @stellabelle. Thanks for sharing :-)

I can talk to some of my friends and see if I can get some photo shoot scheduled in, sounds like an interesting project. And who doesn't like free photos?

Well, will IPFS work? I was hoping to get a programmer to respond to address the technical issues.....

I am not sure about that but I can do some of the photos for it. I have a diverse set of friends irl

how to get this organized?

On my end I am just gonna call up my friends and tell them about the project and see if they want to participate, I can make a post with free usage marked under the photos

Hmmmm, this never crossed my mind but its so true and we have a lot of beautiful blacks.
I wont blame this on racism tho,i think the blacks dont get their pictures to the right place, most of the pictures on net where taking for the purpose of stock and unless an image is offered to sites lie pixabay,i dont think they have the right to haunt for black peoples pixs anywhere.

I love this innovation of yours,i see it coming to birth

01.jpg02.jpg03.jpg04.jpg05.jpg06.jpg

Hi steelaabelle, what a great post you had posted. You brought every time something remarkable. You are a genius lady, we have to learn more from you. White and black are the only colour, geniousness is the greatest thing of human life. Thanks for sharing, wish you good luck and good health.

This sounds like a good idea. Since it will be a new thing, maybe when uploading a picture, the uploader has a choice to auto add a steemit watermark indicating it came from steemit, and is a common creative item for royalty free use.

i don't like watermarks, but if we create a website, it would tell the story

racism can happen when the people have not seen the world. Those who are the frogs of their well do the racism.

Being a black man, i believe the internet has been a racist because the input of the blacks has not been what it should be. Taking for example your hypothesis, i believe if there are more quality photos of the blacks then there will be black results almost at the top for the search query. I am into poetry, but as you brought this idea, i am already widening my horizon to think and act on it.
I believe Nigeria will be one great community of steemit planet as @eurogee and other steemians are putting efforts to see to the realisation of this goal. Let the internet know, ‘we blacks are coming'
I must really commend your efforts to see to the growth of steemit planet and blacks. God bless you.

This is a very nice observation for developing our views about black people.
I am black , an africa man.

I have always have this weak mind whenever i tried having a conversation or start a friendship with white meanwhile he/she does not know what i wanted to share but when this racism act popped up and he/she will either ignored or report spam without hearing my suggestion and my ideas.
i believe this will stop since steemit has create a well understanding community to interact and put aside racism. And to the photography website that doesnt includes black in their galleries i believe this will stop once we dont limit act against racism here.
We have lots of black websites that includes black peoples art but since white people belief that each race has distinct and intrinsic attributes. once this act stopped, that is when black will sow high by showing their talents to white and if its welcomed, their art works will be reviewed.

Thanks

I think it is important for the picture to be as important as the content because it can either make or break the post . And for the Racism part , all I can say is that it never ended . It never will, the internet is just one example , the real life is the proof of it . Radian never ends and it is extended to the internet where the growing generations are exposed to it , this is a bad example that is being set for them

Nice idea
Never thought of it
We will need a programmer to respond to the techincal aspect
Uploading the pictures is not a big deal
African's can do that
Thanks for bringing this up

This is brilliant and perfect so everyone gets to be seen. Upvoted 💖

@stellabelle your heart is as large as the ocean. Its like an ocean filled with gold. Thank you

I like this one. It's also hard for me to find images for my blog. Google offers limited photos, and when I go to istock.com, even a simple photo cost $30 dollars. I hope this project became successful. Its a big help for us.

This world has turned into a Global Village and Internet has a major role in that so there should be no any room for Racism . @stellabella You have highlighted the issue which is needed to be ponder upon in this modern age .

The whole mass media is racist. That is how there are so many racists still in existence. The mass media makes up many peoples minds for them first without them thinking for themselves that color has nothing to do with fuck all.

This is an excellent idea. Moreso because I was just beginning to get into photography, AND running out of ideas of what to photograph, all at the same time, lol.

I recently spent 5 minutes capturing a spoon from different angles.

Another idea I had just now, is that it doesn't even have to be made as a stock photo website, it can just be a steemit account that creates African stock photos, ON DEMAND.

I guess it would be controlled by a team of Africans, and things would be a little limited, but we all gotta start from somewhere, right?

yeah, it's best if it's lead by africans, at least that's what i was thinking......it wouldn't make sense for me to run this...

true, it'd be like the NAACP president being white, lol

That's great Idea. We are steemit we can do this and it is very good project .....

Awesome post. Smart, thorough and well put together, you're absolutely right!

I second this @teamhumble..

What a neat ode! I have none of the talents needed, but I think it's an amazing project and hope the right people come along to help out. Thank you for opening y eyes to this. Now every time I do a search I will be thinking more carefully about the images that pop up and about the ones that I choose.

You're right on that. I am committed to remedying this very issue, with my camera. Yes, the Creative Commons is one of the greatest assets we have as content creators. It's a huge body of photos, videos, music, articles (any publishable media) that can be used freely for any use. It is a best practice to credit the content originator, whenever possible, and this is on way the library recognizes and rewards the people who share. Sharing is caring! Some of us photographers and videographers are sitting on piles of treasure if only we will share the wealth and distribute it for other people's benefit. Peace out!

Great post nice

I noticed this immediately I started dabbling in graphic design. We are misrepresented online and that's a shame. I am very glad you're moving to do something about it. Would like to help in anyway I can.

i was hoping someone would step up and take charge of this project.......

Hmm, I'm thinking a contest with ample rewards would play nicely, that way we can get many black photographers across and outside africa in the steemverse interested and participating. Would you back such a contest?

@stellabella according to my promise yesterday, i have taken up the challenge, check it out here
Do let me know what you think, you may upvote it if you think its worth it. Thanks

yes, i did! Now we need to figure out the server....programming stuff....find people who want to do this

Thanks so much. My next post covers announcements for people to join in, i also created a new tag #blackphoto, when the post is online i will drop the link here so you can check it out. Thanks again for the surport of the blacks.

The link to the post is here . Thanks

I did an image search with my little guy today. He showed interest in a hair cut for the first time. I typed little boy haircut and this is the image search results.
Cute little boys. But I was struck by the lack of diversity. Most of the feed was blue eyes blond hair.
He decided he didn't want a haircut. He didn't look like that.

It is sad that with all the campaigns against racism, some people still can't tolerate people of other tribes and skin colour. Even in the most elite places of the world we hear of racist abuses of various kind, all this has to stop. Creating a stock photo library that truly represents people of the world is a very good idea.

In just a few word ma, I'll like to say to all steemian that the world needs someone like you in all areas of concentration, but unfortunately, a human being can not be duplicated.

I'm not trying to flatter you Ma, but the fact is that we hardly have 3 people in the gathering of a hundred that thought of doing something good to the community.

It's a joy in my heart to surface on your post, you've been a major source of happiness recently, thanks for all the UPVOTEs ma

To the major content Ma, I pray the project will be a successful one.
Imagine how cool it sounds

Let's Build The Most Amazing Creative Commons Stock Image Library For The World To Use And Get It Right

I'll like to be part of the project Ma.....

Thanks for the insight

Learned from this line too

Most people don't even realize that every photo needs to be adjusted and messed with in order for it to make an impression and be worthy of publishing anywhere.

I'm happy, I Now got a new look, I'm even handsome more in it

I'm sorry for displaying it here again ooo 🏃 🏃 🏃 🏃 wanna go write a new post Ma

i love it, as I think it turned out rather interesting!

I have no clue how to make the ideas come to reality. We must figure out where to put the photos, like in a server, so that we can create an amazing photo library for the world....I need help, because I am not sure how to do this

I have always noticed this, since I started steaming , I have seen each time I want to use a picture , they all come out as White people, it took like 5 to 6 pages before I could get the proper black pictures I wanted. Sometimes I don't even bother searching deeply anymore, I just choose a good one for a topic... Its trying and I hope it will be put to a stop. Thanks for sharing your observations.

Yay!!! My family/friend @honouramus made it.. Wow🙌🙌🙌

It's up to us to create it. It can be done. I was hoping someone who felt passionate about this would emerge so we can all work together...

We can come up with something and fight this, this xenophobia needs to stop. I will talk to few of my friends if they know their way around this....

So nice

The the start, internet never fair and its promote racist. Look at the website, they use only white

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

I wonder who's more racist: The one who created a simple search algorithm based on tags, or the one using that same algorithm to prop their own ideology by using loaded query terms.

Also:

I read something a while ago that film and cameras are generally not designed for black people.

I sincerely hope you are not thinking this has anything to do with racism.

We live in a world where racism is though to be extinct, but it's not. Though it might be intentional, t the same time, it might be unintentional.
I have made up my mind not to care about trivial things, as they don't matter anymore. If a company doesn't employ me cos am black, I will work hard and buy that company later on, that is who I am.
On behalf of the future president of Nigeria (myself), I bestow upon you a honorary Nigerian citizenship which will take effect after I become the president of course.
Thank you for being open minded.

ha ha! This was the best comment ever! Sure, I will receive an honorary Nigerian citizenship, why not? It sounds like you are well on your way!

If this happens I can help with some editing.. I don't do much portraits, there's other steemians better... But you can throw some my way...

Well, whether the internet is a racist or not, I'm really not bothered. I'm always proud to be a black African. I couldn't have been more proud of my colour. Black is synonymous with beauty. God bless Africa

African women are so amazingly beautiful when you find a lot of pictures of African women the photographs seem to get no respect unless they look like they came from the West.

yeah, true.

In addition to my last comment , I referenced you in my latest post about flag / downvoting war in steemit-feel free to check it out

This is really shocking, thank you for pointing it out, since I was totally unaware of it.. but sometimes I feel like I live in a pink bubble anyways. From all I know, the concept of "race" is proven obsolete by science. There is in fact only one kind of human.

As a German, with our history, I always stay alert to discrimination and injustice. When I lived in th US for some years back in the 90s it deed seem strange to me, that "racism" was really such an issue.. I had never experienced it like that over here...

Now, I certainly won't try to find excuses for bad things, but maybe what some people call "political correctness" had an influence in the results in your search. When I came to the US, I learned, that certain terms are not to be used as they are seen as discrimination i.e. calling someone "black". I still have a number of African American friends and I tried "African American" for the search... so, maybe its not only the content of photo libraries, but also the index or tags, that might need adjustment.

To my great surprise, the issue of taking and editing a photo seems truly difficult like you state. Out of curiosity, I downloaded the photo of @honourmaus and thought I'd have that perfect with 2 clicks in Photoshop. Pffft.. little did I know! Even after 10 minutes, I could not produce satisfying results, and you are right, there is work to do on the manufacturers end!

I will definitely give it all some thought and hope I'll be able to support your project somehow!

Great idea. I love that, with seemingly ease, you have a knack for Thinking Big!!

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

An interesting read @stellabelle. I was uncomfortable when I first saw the title of your post somewhere, then i had to come here.Reading, i found out your point. Although I will agree with the fact that probably the correct key word should have been Africans or African Americans, I must say I am well in support of the stockphotos goal. I remmember a couple of times I see people make graphic designs for events, books, posters or anything that has to involve feature some people doing one thing or the other and this is actually supposed to be a "Nigerian" event, our designers most of the time opt for white people's pictures and I used to wonder why that is so. These are times I hope i was a graphic designer and would make sure I have a black man's picture in those designs, although I'm not sure if I would be able to get a picture that fits into the information being passed on. I agree with you a great deal on this even if we are not confirming the internet's racist capability.
BTW, in some funny way, mobile phone companies like Techno, Inifinix and co here av at least helped us taste some things quality camera phones can do. For example, I use a Techno Camon C9 and I am able to get some quality shots especilally externally and when sunny

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

And I'm going to browse for a BLACK pen ... I hope I don't get a WHITE pen....

I don't really think the internet is racist, actual people are and really affecting a lot of black Americans/ Africans.
To be honest this Sounds like a great idea even if I really don't know what IPFS means, lemme look it up on Google now

I can model as an mixed nationality woman!
Plus I've sent this to a few friends of mine ( who are not YET steemians ) that I know will definitely be interested in this!!
