Drug abuse results in a feeling of euphoria for a short time. After the "high" has passed, extreme anxiety is experienced, Followed by a mark tendency for dependence that develops immediately after repeated injection or use of the drug. Due to repeated doses, tolerance, and dependence develop. The abuse of narcotics could lead to death due to infection and overdose. When injected, it usually causes pain and infection like Hepatitis and Aids ,due to the use of unsterilized materials.
Being slave to narcotics could produce bad effects not only to oneself but also to the family and the community. Many physical and mental illnesses that are associated with drug abuse may occur such as:
1.Malnutrition- Abusers miss their regular meal. They lose their appetite and eventually suffer from malnutrition.The abrupt loss of weight and lack of vitamins and minerals in the body are reasons for acquiring diseases in the blood vessels,lungs,livers ,and kidney or having paralysis of a body.
2.Neglect of Personal Hygiene- Oftentimes,the drug abusers neglect personal hygiene that results to skin diseases.
3.Psychological Illness- Abusers suffer from anxiety, depression and eventually the loss of sanity.
Aside from anxiety and depression , the abuse of narcotics could cause frightening reactions and the thought the one is vulnerable could lead a person to commit heinous acts. Abusers lose their promising future and their end destination is death.
Drug abusers are a burden to a family. A previously , quiet, happy, and peaceful family may change. Life becomes disorderly because of the problems brought by a member who is drug abuser. A family member who previously could be trusted and had self-discipline is now a burden to the family because of the loss of direction in life.
To the community , the effects are high incidence of crime, like robbery, threat ,holdup,child and women abuse ,and even murder. There is anxiety in the community with drug abusers. There is waste of human resources. Lately,the economy of the nation will be affected. The reason is that common drug abusers are the young who are in their productive years.
COOPERATION OF THE AGENCIES IN SOLVING THE PROBLEM
The abuse of narcotics and other drugs is a problem of a family, the community and the nation. To avoid this problem , there is a need for collaborative effort of the government and private agencies . Effective action should be taken. The proper guidance of the youth is important including the dissemination of information about the dangerous effects of drug abuse.
The home, through the guidance of parents , is the most important factor in preventing drug abuse in youngsters. Parents should make their children feel they are loved, provide guidance, show concern and provide them with their needs. There is a need of communicating with them. The proper way to face and to solve the problem should be taught by parents. Aside filling the personal needs of the young, parents should also keep their children away from the drugs. Studying about the drugs and their effects, reading articles regarding drug abuse, knowing where the drugs come from and the reason why drugs are used by the young are important. Also important is knowing what the government is doing to help the private sector and the rehabilitation centers. Being alert, wise and having knowledge of issues in the life of a youth is a part of the duties of parents that should be given attention. The faith of a child in his or her parents is a big influence to free him or her from drug abuse.
The home and the school are partners in the care of the young against the prohibited drugs. In school , students will have the knowledge about drugs particularly in health subjects. What they should know about drugs is discussed. The decision to use or not to use drugs is given emphasis in school. Teachers and Employees in school are helping each other to keep the students away from prohibited drugs.
The community on the other hand is implementing programs to prevent the youth from taking prohibited drugs. Private agencies and the government are providing proper information about the bad effects of prohibited drugs through television, radio,film showings, meetings and periodicals. The government through the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, imposes penalties to those who sell, prepare,plant, store or export prohibited drugs. There are rehabilitation centers ,too, that help treat drug addicts who want to change. Proper guidance counselling is organized by agencies like the Citizen's Drug Watch Foundation,Inc and the Junior Drug Watch.
DECISION MAKING
A healthy person does not need to abuse drugs.What is important is to accept or to face problems and look for solutions. Abuse of drugs, most especially narcotics,is very dangerous. It's prevention depends upon one's own decision. Parents and certain people can be trusted to acts as guide to proper decision making. To make a decision is important and it entails courage, self-respect, value for honor,and love for life. It is also proper to think that correct decision making for any problem is needed for peace with oneself, family and community. Making correct decisions results in a peaceful and happy life,good health and a better future.
