I can definitely see a ton of future uses, but are our follows weighed in for anything?

As far as I know the follow button doesn't have currently implemented functionality, but it is intended to become a system similar to what you see elsewhere, in giving you more direct access and/or notifications to content posted by users you follow.
New features are rolling out almost daily, so I imagine it will do something useful soon.

Right now it's kind of pointless lol. But once the alpha version of steemit gets released, I'm sure they will add a section where you can view the posts of people you follow
