Bad news.

Microsoft acquired Github today. I believe this is not necessarily a bad thing for open-source projects and the community since Github itself was not open-source and it is controlled by a for-profit company.

However, that may be a wake-up call to use the free software alternatives instead of coupling with for-profit organizations like Github, Gitlab, Bitbucket etc. They're here for the profit and they may exit anytime when a good offer comes up.

People started importing their git repositories to Gitlab. But that's just another for-profit company.

That's why "free" as in "free speech," not as in "free beer" software matters.

If you want to feel free and don't want to deal with privacy concerns, Gitea is for you.

It's a lightweight code hosting solution with a similar interface compared to github.

  • It has a MIT license and you can host it in your servers.
  • Lightweight. They say it can even run at Raspberry Pi.
  • Easy to install. (pre-compiled binaries, docker support, vagrant boxes, etc.)

It's not a complete solution, though. There is a good comparison table located at their website.

  • Privacy
  • MIT license
  • Easy to install
  • User friendly
  • Lightweight

Cons:

  • None that I can think of

That's a great hunt! Thanks for the information!
Have a good day :)

If ever there were a reason for Utopian to integrate its own git platform, Microsoft today gave you the best possible reason.

Despite all objections raised when first suggested that. Decentralized git hosting backed by decentralized data storage would solve all problems caused by centralization or possible hosting nuisances.

No platform is better positioned to make this happen than Utopian.

Harbi kötü haber olmuş :/

Microst kodlara çökmeden önce, Github'ta ne var ne yok kendine/başka bir ortama taşıyacak bir baba yiğit çıksa keşke.

Why not gitlab ?

Gitlab is not actually open-source. They have a community edition open-sourced with limited features and coupled to a company.

I would use Gitea just to move away from the "for-profit" companies.

Aaah interesting, I didn't know it wasn't open source.

GitLab also requires a lot of resources to run. Gitea has as minimum requirements a raspberry pi.

Pros:

  • Deploy Tokens
  • Your privacy is secured
  • Easy upgrade process
  • Can run on any RAM

Cons:

  • Can't Pull/Merge request inline comments
  • can't Reject unsigned commits
