Hunter's comment

Now Twilio themselves offer a wide selection of different products, they offer products which help with communication such as the programmable APIs (voice, chat, fax, SMS, etc), engagement, super network or runtime. For anyone who doesn't know about Twilio here's so more info:

"Twilio is a developer platform for communications. Software teams use Twilio API to add capabilities like voice, video, and messaging to their applications. This enables businesses to provide the right communications experience for their customers. Behind Twilio API is a Super Network, a software layer that connects and optimizes communications networks around the world."

What is it?

The product I want to focus on is called "Twilio Studio" and is part of the engagement product line.

Studio is drag and drop editor which allows you build customer experiences at the click of a button, you can build experience using their other APIs without needing to be an expert developer.

As described on their site:

"You can use Studio to craft everything from order notifications, to phone trees, or a Jeopardy-style SMS trivia bot. If you need some inspiration, we’ll show you how to build a serverless IVR, appointment reminders, and a simple survey that connects SMS data to a spreadsheet."

My Experience

So have I used this product before? Yes, in the past to create a telephone-based UI for a chatbot that I was working on, the aim was to take an existing API which surfaces answers to a user query and bring this into a voice interface. I'm sure there is much more you can do that this, but I think this is a good way to tell you more about the possibilities of the product.

  • So the first thing I needed to do was to associate a mobile number to my experience, it was a telephone-based UI after all. Associating Studio with a virtual number was extremely easy to do and was done within seconds. Twilio offer a trial account on their programmable voice numbers which makes this easy to get started, painless and hassle-free.
  • The drag and drop interface was easy to manage and easy to understand, they have a clear tool panel with allows you to easily drag the components you need to help you to build your experience.
  • Overall, within the application I built, I needed to take a user input and then pass this into an API request and then return a result. As Twilio have built this to help you to extend your applications they've built in a way which made these very easy, you can easily capture the input and store it as a variable throughout a users conversation and pass them into requests at the click of a button.
  • Customising the experience was easy too, as I was working with a voice interface how it sound was important you can easily customise the voice with ease.
  • Testing my experience was simple, all I needed to do was call the number and my changes would be available instantly. When errors occur they provide detailed logging for each request made within the call.

Now it's important to remember that I used it for a simple voice experience, but it's important to remember that Studio isn't just for voice, this can be used for SMS (maybe more) too, you can easily see how you could take each of the pieces I mentioned above an move this in to an SMS based experience.

So how much does it cost?

Would I recommend it?

As you can see from my experience, it was easy to use and allowed me to develop an MVP rapidly. I believe it would be easy to maintain in life, don't hold me on that though as I know drag and drop editors can easily become unmanageable. I haven't seen any other companies doing this and believe that they're created a useful tool here, so with that said If you have the use case their trial plan might be the perfect thing to get you started.
