there was a real reason. there were 26 others who flagged him. Actually, I just checked, and it was more like 43 others. There were enough people flagging him to have his comments collapsed, which I have never seen before.

I wasn't saying that anyone was right or wrong, or that there wasn't a reason for your flagging of his comments. I was just trying to point out that your actions seem pretty similar.
You flagged him because you didn't like something he said/did. His treatment of some of the other people on steem apparently upset you enough that you felt flagging his comments was warranted.
On the other side there were people who said/did things that bernie found upsetting for any various number of reasons, so he flagged them.

I don't know about the situation with @ats-david, but @luminousvisions brought his situation on himself. I had never said anything bad to him before and had even upvoted some of my posts. Then I wrote a post he disagreed with and started attacking me with very abusive language

I never flagged him myself and tried to get into a productive conversation, but he basically kept insulting me and swearing

As I mentioned above, I didn't flag him for any of the comments, but I would argue that it is a valid use of the flag button. People have freedom of speech here, and can say whatever they want, which will be recorded forever in the blockchain. Everything is still even there on the site for people to read if they want to (by clicking show comment). Just because we let people say whatever they want though does not mean that we as a community have to listen to what they have to say though.
My personal opinion is that flagging should only be used in extreme cases for various forms of abuse. Flagging because you don't like what they are saying /disagree is not enough to warrant a flag IMO.
For the record too though, @luminousvisions also flagged my post. I never did anything to him or say anything abusive or towards him at all. He just disagreed with what I was writing about in my post, so he flagged it. He also flagged several (non abbusive) comments from other users in my post as well - again because he disagreed with them.

@beanz, can't reply below. There is rarely a point for flagging. I only support Cheeta flags. Yet, it is only my opinions. I think the success of SteemIt is tied to Freedom of speech and allowing even those who we find offensive to live, and let live. We all have a scroll button and the ability to not read that which bothers us. I would apply this to Stella, to Bernie and to TDV. But, again it is only one opinion.
