Men like to drive on busy roads because their spatial skills come into play - gear ratios, clutch and brake combinations, relative speed to corners, angles and distances and its mostly done with the radio switched off.

The modern day driver sits behind the wheels, hands his wife a map and asks her to navigate. With limited spatial ability she becomes silent and starts turning the map and feel incompetent. Then she tries to identify something on the horizon that resembles something on the map. Most men don't understand that if you don't have a specific areas in the brain for mental map rotation, you'll rotate it in your hands.

It makes perfect sense to a woman to face a map in the direction she is travelling. For a man to avoid argument, he should avoid asking a woman to read map. Also if there was a misunderstanding before embarking on the journey, when you get into the car, as a man, you keep mute and allow her rant because if you allow yourself to go into exchange of words, you could loose focus and it could lead to something else. If you guys got into the vehicle and random talks come up and its about turning into an argument, it's obviously wise to keep mute and try as much as possible not to get into an argument while driving but if need be that you have to clear her up with words, then you get a safe location and park your vehicle and commence the argument.
