Are You A New Steemit User? If So, Your Feedback Is Needed

I've been thinking a lot about new users and how to create a better Steemit experience for them when they first arrive. I came up with a solution, one that would have helped me a lot when I first arrived, but still doesn't exist. If you're a new user, I'd like to get your opinion on my solution.

Here it is: on the main welcome to Steemit page, there should be an email address, like [email protected] so that new users can get a real, live person to help solve their issues.

If you're a newbie here, what do you think about this idea? I am willing to do this service as I think it could make a real difference in user retention.

When I think back to my first post I made in here, it took me over 2 hours to figure out how to add an image in Markdown. When I tried adding the image, one user tried to help me, but couldn't figure out exactly my issue. It was very embarrassing! This kind of intimidating experience can scare away most normal people. I tried over and over using the sample Markdown code, but there was something hanging me up which I cannot recall now. Any normal person would have given up after 20 minutes. I'm a particularly stubborn person, though, and I viewed this entire thing as a challenge and I refused to give up. Thinking back, though, if there was an email address that was designed specifically to help new users, I would have emailed my issue and had it resolved fairly quickly. I feel that if Steemit hired me as a support person, as on on-call type of help desk, I think perhaps newbies would feel more secure in staying in Steemit.

Another thought is that if an email doesn't resolve the issue, then a Skype call might be a necessary second step. I have some experience doing tech support since I used to work for B&N on the Nook device. I feel that now and into the future, the most valuable resource will be a real, live human, able and willing to give help in real time.

Frustration comes fast to many people, so getting their feet grounded is what all newbies want.

I still remember back a few months ago when one person, an author, who I shall not name sent me a message in Facebook declaring that he was about to give up on Steemit because he felt that his writing was not being well received. At that time he was not getting whale support, and his frustration was mounting. I told him, "You can't give up now. Just keep trying" or something along those lines. Now he's about to eclipse me in many categories. If he had given up a few months ago, he would never have known what Steemit is really like. I would guess he is a lucky one, mainly because he was already a writer.

Not everyone will see the same kind of success. Steemit is a game that each person has to figure out, but I can tell you, the more engagement you stir up, the better your chances are. I've witnessed some Steemit users gain a lot of traction in the past few months not because they're great writers, but because they engage with others on a consistent basis and they have enthusiasm. Steemit is kind of like a religion. You have to believe in it in order to see monetary rewards flow to you.

So, if you're a newbie, what service would have been beneficial to you in those first hours or days here on Steemit? Maybe your feedback will help in figuring out what new things need to be implemented. Would having access to emailing someone be something you'd like to see in the future?

Really good to see an 18 day old post being 'recycled' - good work both @stellabelle and @surpassinggoogle. One of the things this highlights for the time being is a central point for the filtering and amassing of ideas. Many people have suggested many ideas but they whither and die. There is no feedback.
@stellabelle, you seem to be the senior 'pro' - could we set up a system on a new tag - one tag only if they want to be read and considered?
People tend to be verbose (mea culpa) but filleting is easy enough.
What do you think?

Hi, I'm not a new steemit user, will my opinion count?

Not my post, But I imagine all opinions will count- based on validity of opinion.

sure, go ahead!

Dont just be sarcastic please :D , share your thoughts , why be shy?

Just copy Facebook, steemit needs more interpersonal features.
:)

I think something like a helpdesk would be really useful. I do occasionally get submissions from https://www.steemithelp.net/contact/ but if there was a flood of questions I wouldn't be able to cope.

I used to work at a helpdesk all day, and to be honest, it didn't bother me at all. I like helping.

Great well you could set one up. I don't think it would take much more than a website, or you could just make an email specifically for it and do a post about it.

Yeah, then I could do posts updating the community about the progress......

Exactly and others could help because no matter how much time you have if we have a large influx it would not be enough. I am also happy to help if I can.

I guess the only thing I need is Dan and Ned's official ok, and an official Steemit email. That would be best, I think.

Yes - shouldn't be too hard to supply one to you for this purpose.

I am definitely supporting the idea!! The image adding struggle reminded me of my link adding problems :)

what exactly do you mean, 'link adding'?

Love this idea! Being fairly new on here and learning things by myself, Luckily I have a personal friend who chooses to remain unnamed to the general public who is a whale and has been a huge help. But not everyone has this same scenario of knowing someone who knows the site firsthand. Keep the awesome ideas coming! UPVOTE & RESTEEM
Let me know if there is anything I can do to help, spread the word etc.!

Thanks for your info.

Outstanding idea.

thanks.

You're welcome. You have bought out excellent points worth discussion. Posts like yours prove that intelligent people still post here. Please don't give up.

I am confident that most people agree that these games of chance are essentially mindless, but easy money always sways peoples opinion. These posts are easy to curate because they always earn large rewards. And, as far as picking a winner, its a 50/50 % chance of winning or losing, without any chance of losing money.

I just saw a SteemSports post. You now have to go to another site to place a bet. I see this as a step in the right direction.

Brilliant idea. A chatbox would be cool, but from my experience at work you get a lot of nonsense and lonely people, especially if the image of the customer rep on the chat box is from a female :)

A support email would be great. It could be an account shared between experienced users.

yes, that's what I'm going to focus on providing, and with a partner for back up, especially in a different time zone.

This might actually boost conversion significantly.

I agree with you on this idea, Stella. Thank you for sharing this great post.
Upvoted & Followed.

now, to get it implemented! Thanks for your attention.

Hello there, what a great post and a great idea. It's amusing to me in this moment that the reason I am on your page is that I was sent here by steemsports...
I've been on steemit for four weeks, and your first day sounds about like mine was, except I wasn't even aware of the introduceyourself category until after I'd posted my first story...without a picture ha! I wasn't caught by a kind guide like @merej99 who I only came to know last week, but I did luck out by involving myself in papa-pepper's games as well as immediately discovering the open-mic contest--my brother's a musician so I thought I'd get to know the music community to hopefully bring him on board--but definitely someone to email would have helped immensely. I muddled through it however, and I feel pretty good about my progress. And I should probably stop rambling and explain why steemsports would send me here haha!
I've recently met @beanz and read the numerous posts regarding steemsports, and I've also become acquainted with @klye. Between the two of them I wound up posing some questions to the gaming team which so far have not been answered. They did tell me that you are their arch nemesis...okay no they didn't use that phrase HA, but something along the lines of you speaking out against them meanwhile they share their money and you keep yours. Which immediately sounded a bit ridiculous since I'm assuming you are an individual content creator, correct? I haven't had a chance to look at your page, I just saw this article and jumped in. But as I told them, beanz is not the first I've heard of them being a problem, it was this post-link
in the comment section that I first learned of the issue of steemsports. You should take a look at it, @sigmajin explains the way it all works very well. I asked him to start posting again and he said he'd consider it :) I would love it if you could also sum up your issues with them for me. Or perhaps when I finish this excessively long explanation/introduction I'll find your opinions among your posts ;) Incidentally it's nice to 'meet' you. I'll wander around your page for a bit now. (Really confused as to why they would point me at you as a means of helping their case?)

Firstly, I am not into being a sports spectator. I like to play ping pong and swim, that's about it.
But that's not the main reason I dislike the concept of Steemsports. The reason I dislike it is because of it's network effects and general dumbing down of people, into their most base, lizard-selves. If Steemit turns into a mega gambling site, with bets sucking up the majority of rewards, then I have just wasted over 6 months of my life in a place that I no longer would want to be a part of.

Steemsports has spawned steemgames and other mindless voting schemes, that are just schemes, with little to no benefit for people who vote for them. Steemsports reaps the vast rewards of reputation (which is very valuable) and I'm not sure how much SP, but I would guess a lot.

I think they've actually outgrown Steemit, and it would be great if they set up shop on their own website (i thought they were doing this). Are they? They can gamble and spawn all kinds of stuff like that on a different site. It just doesn't seem to fit with the way this site was built....
Thanks for checking out my post. I appreciate it. I'm trying to get Ned and Dan to approve my email idea, because I really think people could benefit.

I'm not a sports spectator and thankfully my husband isn't either ;) Though we also like ping pong and swimming, I think it's common to those who aren't into sports...unless you count hiking and downhill skiing. Hm, I don't know why they singled you out as their number one aggressor, there are definitely others with a great deal more to say about it then that ;)
Well good luck with the email campaign! Let me know if there's anything I can vote up to help :)
Good luck with the email

I guess I make my opinion public. I'm not as aggressive as others, though and I've not really written a big post about it.......thanks for the support.

No problem! Not sure I can help you with dickbutt though, I am not a prude by any means and I like certain kinds of crude humor but that one is just creeeppyy, haha!!

Great post. And as a newbie I can say good idea! I was allready wondering isn't there a helpdesk or something like that. Bless

thanks......I have too many ideas and not enough follow-through.

It's funny, I was wondering if I was the only person struggling to add a picture to my post! I ended up using Google.

I would support this idea! I personally would never have used it, but I do believe that if it were set up as "if I'm online, I'll help people in need" sort of thing it could be very beneficial to the community.
