There is something missing on Steemit that all other social media sites reward, the easy sharing of third party content. This is what the internet and social media is built on, sharing all the cool stuff you find with your friends.
People want to share tweets, copy cool instagrams, post videos, share music, link images, watch livestreams, and share files, there is no stopping it. Sites that encourage it and make it easy have flourished, sites that ignored the trend have fallen from view. Currently there is a movement by a few people here to actively downvote the posting of just pictures, just youtube videos, or copies of interesting articles from around the internet. This mindset of policing and stopping sharing is counter to every social media site out there. Steemit is designed to be disruptive technology, and should actively encourage and make this kind of sharing easy.
There is a solution. Embed content into a frame in your steemit post with http://oembed.com/
The oEmbed does exactly what is needed for steemit to explode with content. It allows you to embed tons of content from all the big popular social media sites and sharing sites. By embedding content into your post, you give the original author credit\traffic and a link, and you can add your own thoughts to go with it. The plugin has safety in mind as well by only allowing http\s requests, and puts the content into an iFrame to reduce attacks and access to cookies. This appears to work the same way Steemit is already embedding images and youtube videos.
Adding oembed would make Steemit the mashup capitol of the internet.
These are just a few of the sites oembed works with:
Sites: CollegeHumor, Dailymotion, Deviantart.com, FunnyOrDie, Getty Images, Flickr,
Documents: Didacte, Docs, Embed Articles, Embedly, Pastery, Scribd, Sketchfab
Social: Crowd Ranking, Instagram, Meetup, iFixit, Kickstarter, Poll Daddy, Reddit, Vine
Music: MixCloud, Official FM, ReverbNation, Rdio, SoundCloud
Video: Hulu, Ted, Ustream, VEVO, Vimeo, YouTube
https://noembed.com/ is another solution based on oembed. Here is their added value proposition:
oEmbed is nice. Unfortunately, not everything supports oEmbed. Worse, the sites that do support it don't provide a consistent interface. Noembed provides a single url to get embeddable content from a large list of sites, even sites without oEmbed support!
Noembed adds the ability to embed these sites: Amazon, iTunes Movie Trailers, Ars Technica, ASCII Art Farts, Bash.org, Beer Advocate, Clickhole, Duffel Blog, Facebook, GiantBomb, Gist, Github Commit, Gfycat, GlobalGiving, IMDB, Monoprice, Nooledge, Spotify, TED, The Onion, TrailerAddict, Twitlonger, Twitter, Urban Dictionary, Vice, Vimeo, Vine, Wikipedia, XKCD
And these image hosts: CloudApp, Dropbox, Imgur, Instagram, Lockerz, Path, Picplz, Skitch, Twitpic, Twitter, YFrog
Can you imagine the explosion of content if the users could embed things from all these sites into a Steemit post?
There is a paid enterprise version that might be a good whale investment. http://embed.ly
These two tools are open source, and just waiting in github.

How has this post not gotten more up votes? It's EXACTLY what's needed. I don't follow all the technical talk and don't know how to implement it on my own, but if this could be baked into the Steemit cake it would be huge.

That's what I think too. The technical side looks just like how they add images and youtube videos right now, and it's open source and just sitting there waiting. It would solve most of the copyright and plagiarism problems by simply making it easier to share stuff legally.
Link to this post in discussions and try to spread the word. It won't happen without people asking it.

I love your ideas, your work...and i suspect politically we could sit down with a beer and be our own little infinite echochamber.
I am following you starting today tinfoifedora and trying to upvote your posts when I can. I might not be a huge whale but I can give you something and that is better than nothing.
I have had very similar ideas to the one about which you are talking...only my idea is that to create an easy way for you to post other people's content and then add in a name into the "attribution" category along with the appropriate contact information to send whatever steemdollars are earned.
If it were done in this way, your posting of someone else's content to steem pays them immediately, but you could keep the steempower. This is how i see it anyway :)

Hi fuzzyvest, that is very much appreciated, thank you. Yes, the conversation probably would echo a bit but those are good to have over a beer every once in while!
That is a great idea too, then steemit would get both content and tips for creators in one shot, with a side of steempower for the poster. I'll bet these codewizards could easily include that feature. Hopefully they will take an in-depth look into both of these ideas.

bump. i agree.

Yeah, this is a cool idea. Then a percentage of the steem allocated to a post could be sent as a reward to the original content creator. Maybe 1-5%? Just spit-balling

I think these sites should integrate STEEM within their services and not the other way around. That would explode the market cap of STEEM.
Hopefully soon Steemit.com will only be one of many sites utilizing STEEM.

Flagging for troll. Change every site but steemit is not a constructive answer.

Some things just wont change and the pursue of cash is that thing. Its simple as this everyone wants power and control and having money gives you that. These copied content and fast post is just signs of people wanting what??? $$$. Is that wrong? Hell no but still encourage more authentic content !

Mashup culture is what we have now, either quickly embrace it or the competitors will.
I'll bet synero and akasha are working on this, before release.

yes i figured it out after the fact. I think the discussion is valuable though so I upvoted it. I do not only upvote content i agree with--but ideas that start valuable conversations :)

I have to disagree. Allowing arbitrary HTML/JS code in any post in Steemit through iframes is not a good idea. It opens up too many paths for security vulnerabilities.
Selectively allowing some services (as is done for YouTube links) to be embedded is a better way to go. Services like Vimeo, Soundcloud, places where creative people post their stuff.

If you read their security statements, they block JS and cookie access and do not arbitrarily allow just any code.
Selectively allowing some services is what they do. Vimeo and Soundcloud are in the list.

As expected, the self appointed content police are starting their rampage. Notice who it is, and who disagrees with the embedding idea.
