Voices of the underwater: Behind the secrets of success (Formerly 'This post needs a cool title!')

in steemit •  7 years ago  (edited)

So I was listening in to the VoTu Podcast, live yesterday evening (8:30 CET) hosted by @beanz in the discord channel 'Sunday Podcasts' which is available here: https://discord.gg/RPcGVuD

The show usually lasts a couple of hours and is a good place to learn about the general feelings towards the state of the Steemit community. Last night the show was mainly focused around recent events including:

  • Generous delegations from the likes of @fulltimegeek, @stellabelle, and @aggroed (Thank you FTG and all!)

  • The rise, and further rise of Bid-bots and how they can be both good and bad

  • Hardfork 19, and how it's allowed for both of the above to take place freely

  • Self-voting and vote-buying

  • The type of people the platform contains

  • And what you should be doing here as a (Red Fish) Minnow, Dolphin, Orca, and Whale sized account to succeed in making friends and a bit of income

All these topics could be written about individually and extensively, but it's the final point I'd like to expand on today. First of all, a method to work out which category you are in, and then I'll get to the main focus of my blog today.

Thanks to VoTu and PAL for the images

Who are you?

Most users are generally aware that they exist as a one of the account types above. These classifications are not used by all but I shall continue with these names during this blog. You can find out which type of sea dweller you are by name here: https://utopian.io/@abh12345 and in numbers, here: https://steemdb.com/@abh12345

Image created from the above links

The approximate numbers (as they change slighly depending on the amount of Steem per Vests) behind this are shown below.

VestsFishyapprox. Steem Power
1 millionMinnow< 5,000
10 millionDolphin5,000 - 50,000
100 millionOrca50,000 - 500,000
1 billionWhale500,000 +

Something like 9 out of 10 visitors (Assuming I get 10 visitors!) to this blog are likely to fall into the Minnow category, and so my focus is mainly directed towards you.

In the words of the user they call @aggroed

Minnows should be in the comments, Dolphins should be writing blogs, and Whales should be curating....

And in a flash last night he was onto another topic, calmly and with great wisdom, responding to questions being asked. This short sentence though, in the midst of much other interesting points around the topic areas listed up top, are the words that stuck with me, and were the inspiration to write here today.

They are clear, and correct, and you should take heed. @aggroed has the support of almost 7000 users and in his own words, a 'Passionate Witness for Peace, Abundance, and Liberty (and) Minnow Support Project Founder.'

Almost all his Steem Power is delegated out to Minnows and projects that support growth of the new users, he's a top 20 witness (no mean feat if you weren't part of the golden circle to begin with), and you can find him, and the excellent people surrounding @aggroed and his vision, here: https://discord.gg/Cqmby7d

I'll try to expand what I think he's saying in those words above, in reverse, just to keep you on your fins..

Whales should be curating

Simply, whales are rich - rich in my book, and likely rich in yours. 500,000 Steem Power is over half a million dollars - that's 'rich' to me.

Most whales never comment or write posts. This takes time, and time is money. They have money, it's time that's important. Up-vote (and down-vote) though they will, whether it's automated or not, votes mean curation rewards and these are like 'interest' on an investment to them.

Dolphins should be writing blogs

It's true you can become a dolphin by investing $5000 into Steem Power today and so it's time for an addtional concept, which again I learned about from @aggroed's recent forum hosted in the P.A.L Discord channel.

A follower Whale - Less than 500,000 Steem Power (99.9% of us), greater than 5000(?) followers (some of us). @aggroed and @stellabelle are 2 examples.

And so if there are follower Whales, then we could say we have follower Dolphins - a couple of thousand active users is the number i'm plucking out of thin air again here.

A (follower) dolphin should be writing blogs

If you turn up and stick $5k in, dont expect the visitors and up-votes to arrive. You have to build this following, and by the time you reach follower dolphin status (actual number of followers open for debate below), then you can start really focusing on the top level Posts.

By this time you will have friends here, some auto-vote support, idea's around your niche, and a good understanding of the space around you.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly...

Minnows should be in the comments

This is where you must start as a new user who has not invested financially into the platform. It is also where you will 'make or break' your Steemit career (at least under that account).

Comments are where you will get noticed, be it positive or negative. For the most part, you will gain your following here. @exyle calls it 'the grind'. It is hard going, and you may feel that you are giving and not receiving to start with, and for months this may be how you (correctly) perceive things.

However, if you work hard, and get a bit of luck, good things can happen...

On this post, I left a comment as you can see below.

stellacomment.png

Firstly, @stellabelle's post has at the time of writing, 4,158 views. (That's a lot!)

Secondly, this happened..

stellaRS.png

This resteem by @stellabelle, brought 61 more visitors to this blog than the previous post and attracted a host of new users and comments. I consider this as a breakthrough moment here on Steemit for me, and it came from a comment.

I hope that if I asked you how I lucked out on gaining 5,000 delegated Steem Power recently (thank you FTG!), you would know the answer - yep, a comment.

Be polite, funny, and on topic - ready to engage?

Again, check out both these channels in discord, @beanz and @aggroed are fine hosts and new friends await.

I did t realize I had moved into the dolphin category! :D, anyways, really awesome article, made me think a bit about the way to approach steemit. I was wondering what do you consider a solid amount of followers here on steemit?
To me 1000 seems a lot. Cheers man.

Congratulations! :)

I don't think follower counts are relative to rewards, and should only be taken as a rough guide. Lets face it, just one nice 'up' like the one I received today (first time I think on a post of mine, but once on the comment I spoke about the reply to @gniksivart - wonder if @gigafart knew I was referencing that!), is all you need to make your post worthwhile.

3640 is my count, 1500 of those have not cast a vote to anyone in the past month... http://steemit.deadfollowers.info/

Cheers for the comment!

Minnows should be in the comments

Good that I didn't read that a week ago. Thanks to @utopian-io, I made about $100 with blog posts during my first week on Steemit. :)

You know what, I had planned to end with a mention of this having the potential to change with @utopian-io at the end of the blog.

You arrived at an excellent time and are quite right in mentioning this. Your comment will now be at the top of my blog.

Your comment will now be at the top of my blog.

Making a statement, I guess. Haha.

This is a new era for Steem rewards. You can see the % payouts for the type of content you produce with @utopian-io, almost all of which comes from this account.

It's rarely been possible to gain regular, consistent, and 'high' rewards as a newcomer - Utopian has changed this somewhat.

Cheers!

Yeah, it feels a bit like an unfair advantage, but on the other hand, I think that utopian-io is only the beginning. Hopefully there will be more systems like this in the future that reward work for the community in other areas as well...

Unfair? It transparent and there for all to see!

Grab them hot cakes while they still taste good!

I never really bother to think about what I should or shouldn't do at my 'level' to reach whatever goal. This is the first social media platform I use because I consider it a fun experiment. I don't care to much about the dollars. If I want to grow rich there are better ways. I do care about the reputation I built up, it shows the appreciation I got and that feels good. And of course the many new people I got to know.

That's fine too, whatever makes you happy.

I'd like to move up the ranks, making friends along the way. You are in a good place to do both in your current role :)

Cheers!

Think Tank of Steemit: Voices of the Underground

Thats your title right there

I like it, lets see if anyone else is in the running. Could be a winner by default here :D

@daudimitch looks like your the winner. Congratulations.

@abh12345 "Minnows should be in the comments". I agree with that, but one thing that always troubled me is, when I comment on a post that has a pending payout 100x my SP,Is it acceptable to comment without upvoting and save the upvote for who those who interact with me ? or its a behavior that needs to be avoided before it spirals into something else.

Honestly, I would say save your vote. Perhaps for the reply, if you get one.

Focus on making a great comment, your vote will be unseen in the example above. You could choose to vote really early for it to be seen for a few minutes. But yeah, comments :D

Good question, thanks!

Thank You.

As a social media platform, everyone should be seen in the comments from time to time.

However, I do agree with what you've said. I have been doing things wrong, but even though I'm aware of that, I've continued to do things wrong. I chose to do it.

I have literally hundreds of ideas and things I want to share and do on Steemit, but I'm struggling with the ''grind''.

I can see why it is necessary and I understand it too, but I still struggle as I have been trying to do my own thing rather than approaching steemit like everyone else.

It's my bad though. Some things aren't meant to be.

Hey

Yes you can have the best ideas, but people have to see them for them to have the chance of being rewarded.

It's even harder going back to 'the grind', when you've done it before and know the work involved. Props to you for continuing and taking your own path.

Cheers.

I disagree. If you're a minnow and still spending most of your time in the comments you're doing it wrong. By the time you're a minnow or getting close you should be writing posts. I can spend all day trying to comment on as many posts as possible. I can take an hour for each post write 3 posts and almost be guaranteed $1 per post. It's a good rule of thumb, but will cause burn out (I've experienced it) by spending so much time on commenting with such a little ROI.

I was a minnow until last week.

For months (3/4/5) I'd get less than $1 with a post, and sometimes get $10+ (with the most being $50 in June) for a single comment.

Using steem.supply, I'd see the post/comment payout ratio slowly creep from 95% comment rewards, to now, 95% posts.

Thanks for your comment :)

As a minnow, I think posting also helps in growing in the community. But there should be more of the "commenting" part of the equation in order to gain traction on this platform. Like what you said in this post.

6883 comments, 192 posts = 36 comments per post :)

Wow. You do great in commenting. I must follow your way hehe. ;)

I think it is a little more complicated. That comes off a bit like "children should be seen and not heard...." lol! Minnows need to post, too. It helps me to learn the process here. If I see someone who never posts, I do not follow them. I make little to nothing on my posts, but I am still developing the habits needed to be a dolphin.

There is a lot of incentive to start posting right away, and I would argue that this is a reason why curation through entrusted delegation should be an alternative option to minnows. You can't make enough money from commenting and it's human nature to go for the option that would bring in the best income. If there were a way for minnows to apply to be a curator, a whale could monitor their curation habits both before and during delegation to ensure their curation is retaining users and therefore attracting new users (as retained users attract their friends).

... to ensure their curation is retaining users and therefore attracting new users (as retained users attract their friends.

Yeah, the best source of a new user to steemit is i think, a new user of steemit (that is loving it because they are getting rewarded off the bat!)

We've all told our friends, and they are either in, or not :)

That is an excellent idea. My big "problem" is with UNCURATED upvotes. I do understand there are only so many hours in a day, and so whales turn to bots to automate stuff but I think automated curation is going no where good. Delegated, then the whale just has to check up on the ONE person (or however many they chose) rather than try to read every newbie post looking for the gem in in a sea of spamshitpostery.

Word!

A comment is seen and heard by way more people if placed on the right blog. This still holds true for myself, and I'm 15 months 'old'.

Of course, you need to write a post or two, but not everyday, and don't spend the day doing it.

Thanks for your feedback :)

Thatvis some great advice. I understand it isn't straight yours, but you did a good job of communicating it. Thank you.

Hmmm...2 more things for my todo list!!

It's little complicated to maintain.

The truth is being a minnow is friggin difficult when i joined here i tried creating a bond wih many users rebuffed me, a few others im friends with.

Hard work at least has brought a bit far, and well im still working hard, its hard to get people to see your blog, however as a writer i know i have talents and one day, i hope to make it real.
