When Steemit, inc. allows account creation...

in steemit •  7 years ago  (edited)

This is what you end up with:

Are you surprised? I'm not.

Congratulations @ned and team, you've allowed 596 accounts to be created to spam an already taxed network with Quark shitcoin spam!

266 Accounts created 20180512

137 Accounts created 20180511

And still, real users can't obtain accounts.

This is a pathetic, (obviously) easily exploitable attempt at an account registration system, @ned. You expect us to believe you can deliver SMT's when you can't even handle a simple task like registration? What a joke.

Authors get paid when people like you upvote their post.

Something needs to be done to fix it!

Many things need to be done here to prevent Spam, Phishing and Self-upvote in a wrong way :(

Not surprised.

Can you provide me a list of the abuse accounts?

Also, if there are still legitimate first-time users who are having an issue with the signup process, have them message @drakos on steem.chat.

Updated list coming.

Thanks. I'll forward this on to the appropriate people and try to get the delegated SP revoked.

Tell them they should also STOP creating accounts until they have something to prevent this in place. It REALLY is NOT that hard.

Hold on, it needs some refining. Picked up commenters too.

Brilliant idea, I second

By design, it is not a very intense verification process. There are going to be some users that can meet their criteria to get an account that will end up abusing the system. The main thing is to try to deal with it as best as can be done.

Loading...

I'd be curious to see how many legit accounts were created during this two day period. This is a significant amount, regardless of the excuse.

I agree that it is a lot. I'm going to forward to the appropriate people to investigate.

Around 25,000 accounts were created around that time though, so percentage-wise it isn't necessarily that bad.

If that was the only abusers, we know from past experience it isn't. In fact, this is far from an isolated incident. I posted a lot created here:

https://steemit.com/steemit/@themarkymark/steemit-creates-accounts-for-scammers-and-nobody-else

I find large chunks of 50 users created immediately from Steemit Inc being used nefariously.

@timcliff Can be anything done about phishing! Hackers transfer the stolen money everyday out of Steemit to Blocktrades or Bittrex.
I know it is users responsibility to protect their own accounts, but things happen! At least stolen money can be stopped here and returned to users or to the reward pool.
It is really a major problem and hope someone can look into it :)

This is one example:

https://steemit.com/@richardman/transfers

And there are some others, I can share them as well if needed. But all the money is gone :(

Lots of changes have been made to try and improve the situation. More are under discussion. If you have any suggestions for improvements, let me know.

@timcliff Yes I have many suggestions :)

  • The Trending Page
I have a suggestion which might be a solution. As voting bots became a part of the community, we cant fight them or remove them. But we can limit users using them. For Example whoever has more than 25000 SP wont be allowed to use voting bots in the future. Minnows who get flagged and loose their reputation for reasons like spam or plagiarism wont be allowed to use bots as well. That way only minnows can use them to be visible. Dolphins and Whales will be on the trending page anyway. They dont need any support to be visible.

There is another solution which might be even better! Push all promoted posts to the "Promoted" page, whether they use Steemit or voting bots to promote their posts. This method will clean the trending page forever!

  • Phishing
There are many accounts involved in phishing. They steal accounts with high reputation and use them to downvote others and spread their phishing links. Finally transfer their money to another account and from there to Bittrex. I was also a victim some weeks ago, but didnt loose much and my account was recovered in the same day. Other users lost about 100 SBD and the money remained in the scammers account for days, before they transferred it to Bittrex.
So if we will have a live chat to report the problem at the same time and resend the money back to the users or to the reward pool, it will make a big change. It is happening everyday and many users are frustrated. There should be a real solution for this, because nobody can do anything against it. Maybe the scammers accounts should be suspended as well.

  • Self upvote
I dont have any problem with self-upvote, but I noticed many thing lately. Some users spam and upvote their own comments up to 6$ and not only one comment, but about 20 or more. Dont you think they are misusing this option!

This is one of the examples:

abuse_LI.jpg

My suggestion is to limit the usage of selfupvotes maybe to 10 per day. The most of them dont even read or upvote other users posts, but upvote only their comments.

This is all what I can think about right now and thank you for the opportunity :)

Hmmm ... My name is in the list. Are you sure it is reliable ?

I'll review each one before sending it on. Thanks for the info.

Wait... @orcwithaspork has to be the best name I have seen in the history of the internet!

your name, or the list @arcange? from your knee jerk reaction to my comment on your latest report, I am not so sure about how reliable you are!

Replied! Next time, please avoid overreacting too fast!

This person @abusereports seems psychologically disturbed. He spends his days downvoting everybody out of pure bitterness and doesn't contribute to the community in any positive way whatsoever. He seems to be taking a revenge on the world. Poor soul...

It is not reliable. @airdroptakibi is on the list. I am following that account for months. And now he is getting tagged because of this bad job.

Thanks for the vigilance in finding and raising the issue @abusereports and also to @timcliff for seeing it gets escalated to the right people. One thing I do like about Steemit is the willingness to look for abuse and call it out. That makes a community strong.

Every day there's a scheme to manipulate people in the crypto space.

Well it's true. But do you know that @abusereport not only has downvoted an article that I've written for no reason at all but has also insulted me in the process. This person is very toxic for ou community and just as dangerous as the bots themselves. Imagine a person like him during WWII in germany...

I, myself, created over 120 accounts...

Was wondering about the quality of the system, as well as earned around 500 euro from 'mini bots' - good for an average student.

Some things have to change.
@abusereports

Takes my friends almost a month to sign on to Steemit!

This is OUTRAGEOUS. It’s worse than bod bods.

@berniesanders FLAG THE LOT OF THEM!

This is bad, affecting the real prospective users

I suspect that these accounts have been created directly on the blockchain, bypassing the steem sign in procedure. At the moment, anybody can create accounts from the command line, if they are willing to suply a little bit of Steem.

You suspect wrong.

I remember 6 months ago everything was bit better than it is today. We have so many spammers and hackers here. Fishing links everywhere, spam, begging for upvotes etc.

This is another confusing comment that I saw today. More than three accounts spamming and using this same message.

bbb.PNGbb1.PNG
bb2.PNG

These are the 3 accounts that I found now and there are many others that I saw today morning. I dont understand why does it take weeks for normal people to sign up, while spammers do it without problems.

And even if there are paid accounts now, it is the same problem. They can buy even 1000 per day and spam . How many phone numbers and emails they use! I think we need ID verification to make everything safer here. Maybe also an account suspension system for spammer and hackers.
Did you realize how much they stole from different users in the last weeks and abused their accounts! Nobody could take any action against them and they transferred the money to Bittrex without any problem. But it is not over and they are still active.

This is one of them : https://steemit.com/@richardman/transfers

It seems like 50% of Steemit accounts are user by spammers, hackers and bots :(

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

50% seems generous... I always thought it was closer to 80% - There's only about 8,000 active users, after all

Seriously I felt too shy to say more than 50%, because I wasnt really sure. But you are absolutely right. Six months ago more users were active than today. In the last weeks I feel that we are just the same people writing everyday. Many old users left the platform or invested in bots. New users are lost and frustrated, because nobody upvotes their posts. Some of them leave the platform early and very few trying to be active and productive.

It seems that so many people write just a few posts, get disappointed they didn't get $200 from their first couple posts and quit.

Yes thats the problem. They need to be more patient and try different topics until they find success in one of them.

i'm a new user (within the last couple weeks) and i fully intend on staying! unfortunately there's not many 'whales' in the cannabis categories but i'll try 2 be the first one :D

youtube is banning all cannabis content creators and i've been encouraging as many as possible to switch to dtube and steemit.. not sure how many have though

Believe me everyone will move to DTube and Dlive It will take some time, but until the end of this year many things will change. On Youtube they are getting more views because it is an old platform, but I see Dlive is doing very well lately.

Lol.

This post has the story of those three accounts: https://steemit.com/hate/@therealwolf/staring-into-the-face-of-hate

Oops, I didn't read all the way down to see they had appeared here.

Oh now I understand what it is about! It is crazy, but many users need to learn more about Steemit and using apps, before blaming other.

Been too long since I've made an account, are there CAPTCHA's involved?

Seems like some friction makes sense for the process.

First of all thank you for your hard work @abusereports exposing the scammers! Unfortunately we will see much more in the future, but @steemit is still an infant and will improve a lot!For the registration : how about requiring selfies with handwritten steemit signs from each new registrants?

This is worrying, I never thought this could happen on Steemit.

Sheshhh! Wish steem INC at least addresses this problem 🤬

It's inspiring to see so many people care about the Steemit network and community. Unlike older social media platforms where we were selfishly only focused on how many friends and likes we got, Steemit will be fine because of everyone's passion for bringing quality to the community. It may be full of bots and look like Myspace now, but it will grow into the number one social media one day because people actually care about it.

Why does that happen?
If there is no system that can cope with the sad problem?

It just takes a week to sign up. But is multiple accounts allowed?

@flipstar is a legitimate accountholder who holds thousands of sp, but made a non-spam post about quarkchain and now all his comments are being flagged.

@den360 you're on the @abusereports naughty list!
If you do not stop, your account will be rendered invisible on Steemit. Bad Steemian! Bad!
