Is Steemit ripping us off on our content?

Is Steemit getting the better end of the deal on our content that we make for the website? I have a feeling that in the future our content could potentially be worth a lot more value long after the 24 hour curation period has expired and after the 30 day payout window has expired.

Content could be valuable for Steemit years later down the road

What if in 2 or 3 years Steemit is a much more popular website and is widely used by everyone worldwide? If your content is only getting 2 or 3 page views per day right now it is possible that years later it will be much more popular and Google could link right to your page on a topic someone is searching for, so a post you are making a few bucks on today might get thousands of views years later down the road if it becomes a popular topic that people start searching for.

What this means

This means that if Steemit brings in advertising revenue later on then they will be getting the better end of the deal because they will be collecting revenue on posts that are long past the curation period. So let’s say for example you earn $50 bucks on a post today, but in a year it becomes a popular topic on Google and it receives 10,000 views per day Steemit could sell advertising popups similar to how you see ads on Facebook, they could have advertisers that want to only advertise for that specific post and they could be collecting hundreds of dollars in revenue per day just on one post alone.

Still much better deal than Facebook

Don’t take this the wrong way, we are still getting a much better deal then if we post on Facebook. Even if you only receive $1 or .50 cents on post that is still a lot more money then you will ever receive for posting on Facebook or Twitter.

Could Steemit adopt a new method for payouts in the future similar to how Youtube pays on videos?

It will be interesting to see if Steemit starts collecting advertising revenue will they also come out with a new method for payouts similar to how youtube pays for videos? If a post isn’t popular today and receives very little reward it doesn’t seem fair that Steemit could collect revenue on that post years later and give us a very small fraction of what they receive on the content years later. I would like to see Steemit adopt a similar method to youtube for rewarding content if that content does become popular years later down the road.

Conclusion

In conclusion I hope that Steemit does come out with a similar payout method to Youtube for paying on content if it is popular years later on down the road. We are still getting a great deal on our content even if we do not receive anything years later compared to what we will receive on Facebook or Twitter. I have seen a lot of high quality content on Steemit so I would not be surprised to see a lot of posts and articles still be popular years after they are created. The posts on Steemit seem much higher quality than what I see everyday on Facebook and Twitter due to the potential rewards you receive, it seems like people make much higher quality posts on this platform due to having the opportunity to earn rewards on your posts.

If all my posts that all make $0 make money when I am old and grey, I will be pissed, if I can still see then.

I hadn't thought about this. Hopefully something does happen to allow us to keep making money off of our posts.

Good observation that I hadn't considered. My guess is that many tweaks and adjustments will need to be made over the coming year. And like you, I'm still incredibly optimistic about the platform.

Hey, yes that is very valid insight. If i make anything I would be more inclined to invest it into the future of steemit as that is where the value seems to be at the moment. You could cash it in now, but I think the idea is to encourage the roots of this platform so that we can all have some pie later. Upvote if you agree.

Yep I agree I am invested for the future! I have just been powering up I haven't cashed my SBD in for actual dollars yet.

Well, you still get paid for upvotes made on old posts, although such upvotes are rare because they provide little in the way of curation rewards.

The system definitely isn't perfect, but you do get paid for content that gains popularity as it ages, even if such popularity isn't common.

No, that's the whole point. After 30 days a post can still get votes, but it won't get anymore payout.

Huh, I didn't know that.

Yes, it can. It gets another payout after 4 weeks.

Honestly I get the feeling they aren't going to do advertising. However I do think that posts can retain their value long after they are written, and could continue bringing in new users. It would be good for posts to still earn on upvotes perhaps on a monthly basis.

Do we get paid Royalty? For our content?

Only if people up vote in the first 30 days!

What I am trying to say , if Steemit decided to sell the content in the future.
Do we get Royalty? For our Original content!

I don't think so not that I know of, that is why I wrote this article. I could see some stuff being worth a lot more then what you get in the 24 hour period for sure. It could be worth Billions all the content, Facebook content is less quality and it's worth billions from the advertising revenue.

I really don't understand the 30 day limit. Just what benefit does it possibly bring? Content that is created could easily get views after 30 days is up, earning value for steem but not for the creator.

@theoretical posted a discussion related to this topic within the past couple of days... would post the link but am on my phone. Will try to find it later but its worth digging for.

I will have to check it out thanks. @nonlinearone I learned from you to post a photo and a little about myself at the end of the article! That's a good idea I think it helps get me votes because it authenticates your work so whales don't think you are just copying and pasting somthing off Google.

Let's all hope we get to a point where this becomes an issue. If this thing grows, early contributors should be ok... I hope.

This is the sad reason why I will not post some stuff to Steemit, I would love to post them here, but I have spent years fine tuning them and I would rather get nothing and hold onto the rights then to only get paid for 30 days.

Yeah that is true! If you can make more publishing it with an actual book publisher do it!!!
