My Payouts Have Dropped Severely. But I Will Not Tighten My Belt (Where Upvotes Are Concerned).

Perhaps you've noticed that a week ago I was making 30-60 SBD per post, but now I'm making around 10. I sure noticed. 7 of those are mine, so that's more like 3-5 SBD on each post, coming from my 4,349 followers. Something seems amiss here.

Did my whales leave? Did they power down? I sounded the alarm and briefly my posts went back to making what they did before, only for payouts to once again shrink not long after. Are the whales still here, but spending their voting power elsewhere?

I could understand that. I'm doing alright, other people just getting started on the platform need that support more than I do. But it leaves the question of how I should respond to suddenly losing 2/3rds of my income.

If I make 20 SBD per post then I'm secure in housing, food and utilities even if SBD plummets back to 1 USD per coin. That's the safety line for me. Of course so long as SBD is worth several USD, despite the recent severe dip, I can make enough to live on even with my current average of 10 SBD per post.

I could react in fear, by being more conservative. I could decrease my upvote percentage and spend it on my own comments to boost my earnings, for example. But I didn't get where I am by being fearful and miserly. I got here by cultivating a dedicated following and giving back to the community.

So instead I will be doubling the percentage of voting power I give you guys. Good, reasonably high effort posts will now get a minimum of 10% voting power, which seems to be about what I can sustain right now given the high number of upvotes I issue per day.

I was giving only 5% after I learned the hard way that giving too much results in draining your voting power down to zero, and it takes forever to fully regenerate. But now I'm seeking a balance which permits me to give you guys as much as possible.

That's what I feel the appropriate reaction to scarcity is. Because if it's hitting me hard, it's hitting most of you much harder. I'm in a position to soften the blow, so I will. That's the real value of STEEM, and what people mean when they talk about a "Steemit Community".

Sucks to hear that your payouts are dipping again, but I'm sure it'll come back around.
The future looks pretty good for Steemit. Site traffic, development, and community activity are all on a constant uptrend. Considering the state of the market, STEEM and SBD have stayed ridiculously strong, mostly maintaining their recent spikes.
Your content is some of the best on the site and your community interaction is top tier, you're gonna be fine. I got your back and I'm getting stronger everyday!

"I'm getting stronger everyday!"

HI @alexbeyman. I am new to site & was looking for content under fiction when I across your "Pressure" post. If I was you, I wouldn't be worried as it looks like you seem to be posting great content on the fiction side.

I am excited to have across your profile and looking forward to digging up your old posts and reading them.

That's sweet and very encouraging. It's just, I'm making an average of 10SBD per post. That's barely enough to subsist on and only if SBD doesn't drop below 3 USD per coin. There are people with less followers and lower reputation scores than I have making hundreds of SBD per post. It's difficult not to despair at that.

I didn't get where I am now by throwing in the towel at the first sign of trouble, though. I kept posting all through the dry spell of winter 2014. I may as well keep going if I've come this far.

I get what you are saying and looks like you got a lot of loyal followers as well! I am sure SBD will bounce back soon and also yours post's are going to get what they truly deserve.

Wow alex you are really being a community leader with the things you do. It is not often that when somebody earns less they decide to be "more" generous. It just goes to show that you care about steemit and the people on it. You have my vote for sure. Have a nice week.

It's seems that it is temporary that you are earning less sometime but i am sure that it will recover again after sometime and you will get high payout as you capable.
Best of luck

Yeah, it seems really weird how your posts keep fluctuating so much in payout. I don't know your usual whales, but maybe some of them are just less active compared to how they were a few months ago. Maybe some of them have delegated some of their Steem Power and are cutting back on frequency of votes. Maybe your whales have it set up to auto vote your posts when they're offline, but not when they're online. There's just a lot of things that could come into play there.

Hopefully things pick back up for you again, man. It's been a bit frustrating watching your stuff fall and rise over and over when your content is some of the better quality stuff on the site and you're always so interactive with the community. Just keep plugging away and providing content, buddy. That's about all you can really do I think.

Gratz on surpassing 1,000 followers duder. When did that happen?

Oh, thanks, bro! Felt nice to finally cross that mark, not too sure what I should set my next milestone at though. And, uh, I think it happened like 3.5 weeks ago? It was somewhere around there, I made a post about it 17 days ago but I waited a handful of days to do it since I was working on the greatest graphic known to man. Behold, mortal, the beauty of my work!

(Ahem, by my work I mean the combined efforts of my friend and I since he photoshopped the nukes on there for me, lol.)

I'm but half a dolphin. I will admit, my virtual machine that runs the "feed alexbeyman bot" sometimes misses blocks, and should grab most of your content. Should sometimes if I go nuts with my own voting powah, it won't pick up your posts automatically.

As always, if I read something of yours that hasn't already been upvoted, it gets the manual thumbs up!

Its strange, I tend to notice the same in my payouts, they fluctuate like mad. Its just the lay of the land, I think!

I'm always happy to see when your Tethered posts get much upvotes, this encourages me too :D also I like your profile pic haha.

It's a good idea to give more valuable upvotes to your comments I think, maybe that encourages others to make more comments -> your post gets more visible -> potentielly more votes and comments

But one thing makes me wonder... You calculate your steemit-payouts as your income, spending for food an living? So, you're a "fulltime-steemian"?

Indeed, it pays all my expenses. Though as of late, only barely.

wow, I think that's the dream for many people - don't have to go on a "real" job, just write about the things you like ^-^

I will continue to read your posts and give you upvotes, cause I like your content, escpecially the VR-related :)

Unfortunately my votes are only worth some 0.05~0.03 pennies, so they won't help much.. but that's all I can do right now

It'll be nice just to have comments in comprehensible English from another VR lover. Is there some reason you've not set a banner image on your page yet, btw?

It's done, got a banner now, check it out ! haha :D I had so much fun creating it, especially the left picture... lol

:)
I can't decide which pic/s to take for a banner that fits to my person.. there are so many possiblitys and I don't know which ones to take, so I just queued that task to a later point, haha... you know what? I'll set a banner within the next 24 hours, cause actually someone (you) seems to miss it, so it's not just my own thing anymore :P

Okay, this belt wakes a lot of dirty jokes in my poor head. It can't be cured.
Whales that voted for you are hibernating before the huge events in spring-summer. So I think it will be alright.

Depends on your frequency of posting too. Have you increased the frequency?
Some whales vote high when you do 1 post a day but reduce the voting weight to 1/4 when you do 4 posts a day.

Your upvotes are going to bounce back. I am pretty sure of that:)

Don't worry man it's just the calm before the storm of happiness and moneys.
You probably get lower payouts to prepare for the next big step in your career.

It just goes to show that Steem post rewards are not earnings and you can't rely on them. Great work though, I love reading your posts and often up vote them myself.

Nice to read from a real and compassionate voice. Hope to connect with ya @alexbeyman!

I think you are doing a great job, you always come up with interesting tech stuff for me to read. Not really sure how you find the time to research and write about it all.

For awhile there you had one main whale that was upvoting your posts so if he/she stopped upvoting you then that could explain the payout drop off.

I think it is difficult to manage voting power for most people. I often have to curtail my voting, either by just not upvoting or by dropping my % so I don't drop below 80%. If I discover a couple new authors I like then someone else will be getting less in some way.

I think your content is consistently well thought out and a good contribution to the community, which is why I follow you. Thank you for not buckling to fear but rather leading by example of how all of us should contribute and give back to the community. The ebbs and flows of money will forever be that, a swinging pendulum, and would bet that with the participation you have here, will not ebb for you for long. Btw, because of your tips, you inspired me to put out a post or two 👍. Thank you for the support. You are an asset to the community my friend.

Alex - Be calm... Our lives also having ups & downs... When you get more, secure them for bad days... When you make less, you got that investment to back up you... I think this is temporary drop... I wish I'm correct...

+W+

You are a good person, man. Not only because of this but because of all the incredible things you do and let us know on your posts.

SBD is a rollercoaster. Let's just hope it will go up again.

I think what you're doing is admirable, this should be the whole point of the platform. How sad would it be if all those who were doing well went off and done their own thing. There is huge scope with philanthropy here and we can't lose site of that. Thanks for exercising your morals and integrity, hopefully other whales will see this and think about it. There are some fantastic whales out there already doing this, but the more the better for all of us. Peace.

@alexbeyman, i was thinking that by now you should have been a whale to assist yourself very well. You know human beings can disappoint sometimes.

Relax relax ...take it eaaasy.

The markets have been all over the place lately, it seems - SBD back down to ~$5. I moved all my SBD into ETH when it was around $9, so I'm thinking it's a good idea to move on those highs when possible, because SBD/Steem are less stable. Good luck with the budgeting, hope this isn't hitting you too hard!

Giving is better than receiving, I believe that.
I am sure you are a good and smart person. My advice is to stick to your principles.

Thanks @alexbeyman

Your post very very important and amazing and good

It's gonna be fyn. Pompei

relay so good followers

Interesting view, in fact now I know that some people are for real. I love your courage

I think that's not the end of everything @alexbeyman, maybe it's just temporary, or maybe some of your followers again have other activities. But the important thing is we remain optimistic at our establishment. Because for fortune all have been set. The important thing is keep the effort and keep the spirit. thank you

good your steem post

@alexbeyman Such a great article
