Replicants Walk Among Us: The Appallingly Lazy Tactics of Comment Spammers

I don't have to tell you comment spammers are a problem. The first month or so I was on here, the only comments I received were from bots. But this article isn't about bots. It's about human beings who try to work out the least possible effort they can put into mass produced comments and still seem genuine.

I know they aren't bots because they respond comprehensibly when confronted. It took me a while to compile these example screenshots because when called out, they typically delete their spam comments and vanish. I've divided them into categories below:

The first, and lowest effort, is the generic praise post. It contains nothing referring to the article and is as vague as possible so at least it won't contain details which make it obvious he didn't read it:

Notice he even upvoted my insulting image macro. That's comedy, folks. The second lowest effort form of spam is the one which copies and pastes the title into it, so it seems to refer to what was written, but contains no reference to the actual content:

Another example of the Title Paste tactic:

The next lowest effort, one rung up from the Title Paste, is the Line Paste. It copies a single line from the story followed by generic praise:

This one I call the "Stuck With Me" tactic which is a variation on the Line Paste. It copies and pastes a random line from the article and claims it resonated with the commenter, but not why:

Next up in the ladder of sophistication, the "I will now read it" with a followup post claiming he's done so:

Another example from a different chapter's comment section:

Most heinous of all, sometimes they just flat out copy and paste somebody else's comment but make small changes so Steemit's plagiarism detection bots don't catch it. To be clear the example below is not the copy, it's a legitimate comment by my buddy @deadspace, the one after this is the copy (which the author has since deleted).

Here's the slightly modified copy:

As you can see, there is no limit to how brazen they will be. Even some who I confronted that promised never to do it again, I later spotted pulling their usual tricks in the comments of other peoples' posts. This convinces me I have been too lax with these people.

I don't want to punish anybody. I am not the cops. I do not put myself in a seat of judgement over anyone and have flagged only sparingly so far. My reasoning was that the names of these accounts suggest most of them live in under developed countries.

They have a language barrier to overcome, and it makes sense they might think "I can just copy an English speaker's post" to solve it. They are just looking to make some money to improve their lives, so how can somebody from a first world country interfere in good conscience?

But then I realized what a disservice I am doing to the other Steemians that these spammers also inflict their spam on. By not flagging them I send the message that spam will be tolerated, and I don't currently do my part to weed them out of the Steemit ecosystem.

Consequently, going forward I will be flagging these types of posts. Not to worry, I will recognize my usual commenters but anybody else not wishing to be flagged wrongly, please post more than a single sentence and include commentary on the details of the article which makes it clear to me that you read it and aren't a bot.

BONUS CHALLENGE: See how many of the spam tactics mentioned above you can find in the comments on this very article! And remember: Don't be a replicant. Be a replican.

they aren't a problem for me

when I identify them.
I mute them.
never to see them again.

I hope if you see them copy somebody else's comment, you flag them before you mute them. That shit won't fly.

why would I flag them?
that takes vote power from me!
when I mute them I ban them from my sight
FOREVER
at no cost to me.

To do a service to other Steemians by removing spammers from the community.

go ahead...help yourself.

yeah, I'm starting to see how this works.

I really loved your post Replicants Walk Among Us. I couldn't agree more.

As you can see, there is no limit to how brazen they will be.

So true, much information, resteem and follow.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Seems legit

I try not to spam because it is not good to spam. I follow you alexbeyman

Wait till we get a huge influx of users after Velocity...you ain't seen nothing yet.

@alexbeyman,
If someone spam my comments I will warn him 1st, if he do it again, I will flag his post then, if he do it again, I will go to his account and start flagging until i feel enough!
Little bit rough :P Yeah but I gave him 2 chances to correct what he did! If he can't obey, then I can't help him!

Cheers~

Yeah got to say I agree with @everittdmickey, mute is your friend. Flagging to me seems like it could potentially harm you in the long run especially if they know a whale lol... unfortunately.

These spam comments are usually why I self vote too, so that it goes to the top and will actually be seen by the author and other people that aren't spamming. Not something I like doing but must be done not to be swallowed into oblivion.

One thing I think that might work is like @everittdmickey is doing by muting them, but with a twist, once a week or every couple weeks, or even just once a month, make a post title The following people are muted from my site for comment spam, that way your regular readers will know who to add to their mute list.

You save vote power, and earn a reward for letting us know who they are. I think if more active authors did this the comment spam crap might go away. Downvote obscurity is still visible, muted spammers and bots are not.

Hahahahaha. What the fuck? Are you serious? Someone just copied/pasted my comment like that in the same thread? Oh, my god. This is fucking gold. I don't care how much english you do or do not speak, that is universally a stupid, shitty thing to do and people should know better. So god damn lazy. I always thought the spam on my articles was bad, but this takes the motherfucking cake.

On a side note, I watched Blade Runner for the very first time a few days ago. Really don't know why I waited so god damn long to watch it. I had watched snippets previously and always thought it looked great, but I had no idea how far it delved into being sci-fi pornography basically.

He say you brade ranna

Chomps down on noodles while being annoyed

For about a month now, I have been thinking about doing an article similar to this one but I keep putting it off because I am also trying to establish a blog brand. I don't want to dilute my content for my regular readers. Of course I just had to participate in some holiday contests so I guess I'm not doing the best job of staying on topic......

Anyway, I have also been collecting some funny snips from my comment section.

These three different accounts clearly used the "generic praise post" you outlined. All in a row to boot! I must have good information.
Good Information

This one is a category you didn't cover which I call "digital begging."
begging

Haha I love someone has the audacity to just copy @deadspace comment and just use the thesaurus on each word, wow! I agree its hard with a language barrier but thats no excuse for that.

You have made a right choice of flagging them. Some of them are bots and some of them are craving for money. They be like we are idiots we wont know about spams. You made a really great effort for this article with all those screenshots and haha that was funny. Mainly the copy paste 😂😂. And one thing i like to do pointing out spammers like i used to do in your last posts. 😂😂

Alex - Fortunately I'm not a spammer :) You know I like to read & didn't find an interesting topic to write... Having a little privacy (my culture leads me to)... Otherwise a good house wife with a cute son is behind this W...
Once I resteemed others contents... But it was a very bad idea, so now do only few... But I do have a following list & you are one of the top priority... Comment Spams, I never do, I don't know your VR things... I was reading your novels but with this cute button (my son) hard to concentrate well... Because, I don't know when he is trying to kill himself :) He is a very naught boy :) Therefore, I stopped read them... Sorry for that, but one day I'll do again...
When I'm reading posts, I see lots of comment spams, a common sentence repeat everywhere & it works more than our opinions & comments :)
I feel funny while reading those funny comments :) Nice article Alex...

I discovered the same my first month, mostly comments from bots- yet now I am receiving a little more genuine engagement from other people and it keeps me motivated to post more and to create content that others enjoy.

As for spam, if I don't actually like the content, I scroll past it and keep looking for something that does pique my interest.

One thing I've noticed is that those with exceptionally poor spelling and grammar are likely the ones doing the most spamming.

It's been pointed out many times that Steemit is not the place to get rich quick, and in my understanding, those who spam consistently are fishing for upvotes. Why would they do this otherwise? That's beyond me. I think they spot an account with a high reputation score and decide to zoom in hoping they'll gain some curation payout from upvoting and commenting.

I do whatever I can to help others grow by giving well meaning advice in my posts and hopefully, they will read those posts and take the suggestions to heart. Who knows? Maybe, maybe not; a part of me sort of doubts it.

2 so far, damn I am glad I don't have a big account because thats annoying as hell. There has to be some moderators on here or a block button or something eventually. You get like 25 comments of spam or more a day. I wonder if some of these comments actually worked once or twice. I can agree that most of these people probably actually do live in under developed cities

I guess for a non-english speaker taking someone else's long comment and going in there with a fine tooth comb to change specific words here and there is easier than trying to write out something in english - or using google translate... I guess....

Except, I feel like it isn't. It seems like more work than just typing something into google translate that's super generic and getting a poorly translated but different response.

That would definitely be more effective than the former approach, which seems to misapprehend the nature of language itself insofar as it results in the most overtly suspicious comment possible.

I recognize these problems too on my posts sometimes. I really just ignore them. I always am pretty good about replying to comments that people give me when they aren't any of the above mentioned awful ones you showed.

However I haven't noticed any of these spammers going as far as what you showed happened with @deadspace's comment. That's ridiculous...

I honestly am laughing so hard that there are ALREADY some of the things you mentioned happening in this article, what a fun bonus challenge!

Classic @acehbot

Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

I don't want to hurt anyone. I am not the police. I do not put myself in a chair of judgement over anybody and have waved only slightly so vast. My reasoning is that the names of the accounts tell most of them reside in below developed territories. Amazingly beautiful post my friend I vote and follow me please.

Can't tell if joking...

I think this is master level memeing.

You're probably right. I can't tell, as I am but a level 1 memester. We are dealing with a high level memelord here.

Yeah, I'm totally fucking with ya. Couldn't resist!

Very interesting reply from you today. I vote and follow you please resteem to vote me.

Why are they still like this. They should have atleast read the topic cuz it includes comment spammers.

When i was new at steemit, i do the same that all these spammers are doing. to be honest i was also a spammer. but after almost 4 months here on steemit , i understand that what we need to do and how is need to be done.
So basically in my opinion, the reason of spamming is just lack of experience and knowledge about Steemit.

"I don't have to tell you comment spammers are a problem. The first month or so I was on here, the only comments I received were from bots." I had the same experience. Honestly when a robot comments on my articles it is really a cringe moment for me. I wish they would just leave me alone.

Hello @alexbeyman, every time i see your article post, i always translate to indonesian, i do not comment with bot or copy other sentence, correct as you say there are other parties who deliberately use bot just to make money, if in my comment this is a mistake please understand because I use Google translate in order to understand what you share. Thanks for providing information to the commenting party using the bot.

Useful writing,I thing today everywhere almost use bot.thanks@alexbeyman.

yeah ..@alexbeyman
i don't know how type of you think..
but we should be conscious about it...so we should understand what's happening in the post..
thank's for your conscousness....

love it.

@followed and upvoted

Haha! Cracking post mate, honestly spot on.

Now I feel like I'm being judged for every word I write... :P

That one that is copied (deadspace to mithuj) is actually hilarious/insane.

Makes me cringe a little bit that people think that is good enough to fool people.

I've only been on Steemit for about a week and, whilst I'm loving it, something I have noticed is a hell of a lot of comment spam.

It's actually something that's been putting off a few of my mates who I'm trying to get started on here. To the uninitiated it kind of suggests the community is a bit shit. Obviously that's not really very fair but I can see why they think that.

To be fair a lot of the ones I have seen have been a lot less sophisticated than your examples with no attempt made to cover their tracks.

Just simply "good post, follow me" or whatever. It's mad...

this is hilarious. just got on the platform but now I know what to look out for. this articel also sort of made me realize why the witnesses and and the steem power and steem dollar and all that stuff, how it all comes together. Cause you have to protect the network from tolls and people just trying to make a quick buck. would love if you did anarticle about how to build a positive community on the platform.
Best,
E

This is so a perfect post...am good to follow you for more. Interesting post.

Haha the third one 😂😂 @alexbeyman

This is a good post

Heres one in the comments.

generic praise post :)

Actall they are not problem for me ..if i identify and spemmer in my comment section ..i will give a reply in a politeway then after also dont care about comments ..then i immediately flag that person in my comment section

Good information thanks for this valuable post. He ha just kidding. I hate the comment bots they wouldn't exist if they weren't getting upvotes somewhere. The people who reward them are part of the problem. Sometimes you get comments you think might be a bot but arent sure I try to talk to them to see if they respond before voting for them

One of the most important things I have been looking for for a long time, but I was not able to find anything out of myself. So many people have posted that they have made a kind of comment every time. This is actually not true. What we can do is actually we do not know your initiative. I really like her. Because of your initiative, we have some things Which is arranged so that the people could khate very much in steemit

i used to laziness before you say one day @alexbeyman
ill folow you😌

Thank you for this post, I'm new to this platform and you outlined very well just what I should and should not do when it comes to comments. I don't want to step on any toes or be an irritant.

very good article

He must be the new one 😂😂

I hope that ,that's a very big problem.

I have an ominous feeling...
Be careful replicants are among us. Hiding, preparing to strike back!
They won't let you off after revealing their darkest secret.

I attempt to write fiction/poetry in my posts. I can never get them down as well as they are in my head. I am constantly trying to improve and write better. So, when I see a comment to my post saying"This was amazing, have never read anything as good" - my spam alerts go blaring. haha.

There could never have been any way that would be the best you have ever read, unless of course, you did your alphabets in preschool, went home and read my post in the evening:)

very good post i like it long time
