@pjcswart recently asked me about this, so I thought I'd share a quick post to let newbies know what it means.
If you see this at the bottom of the comment section of your posts:
It means the person who wrote that comment has a low rep and was downvoted, or flagged, by another user. Typically because their comment was spam, asking for upvotes or follows, or inappropriate.
And if you see this for your own comment, it is because you did something to get flagged.
Asking for upvotes and follows is not polite behavior on Steemit, nor is posting your blog links in the comments of other's posts. And of course it should go without being said that you should always be polite on Steemit. Exercise good manners and just be nice!
Steemit, like anything else, takes work. You must grow, and as you grow you will gain followers and rewards. To grow, you must write original posts, and engage with the community with thoughtful comments. Noone will follow you if you write follow me in their comment section!
And never plagiarize! Copying others work is not only against Steemit rules, it is illegal.
If you are consistent and patient, produce good quality articles and are friendly you will grow and gain your following.
If you build it, they will come :)

I always tell noobs to treat their interactions on Steemit the same way they would with real life interactions.
You wouldn't go up to a complete stranger and say "Hey, buy my product! Give me money!" I don't think that would give the salesperson many sales in real life.
But a well started introduction or conversation is more likely to equal a sale for the salesperson

Exactly! This is not a silly little forum, I think many just don't realize they are building a foundation here. Or they get over excited by the dangling shinyness of the Trending page.
And internet anonymity can bring out not very well thought out actions sometimes!

And I think now there is a trend of having links to phishing sites trying to steel peoples Steemit login data. So these ones are also automatically flagged.

I saw a post recently explaining this. That's how I came to know about it. I saw a hidden comment and opened up out of curiosity and it had a link in it similar to what the post described. Left it alone and moved on. I will see if I can find the post again for you.
The scam was picked up on very quickly and the authors and their comments added to the whale bots who flag those type of things. But it is good to know about them for ones own safety.

I noticed in some people's memo field on their wallet page. They even try to trick people with some story. It does read as false, but not everyone would perceive that. So like you say - stay aware.

I have witnessed how some people go straight into an attack on a noob, and I just don't feel that's right. I mean, sometimes when you're excited, or desperate, you do silly and not so kosher things... We were all new at something once, and we all made (in hindsight) dumb mistakes while new at that thing, and I feel a gentle reminder is in order. Now, mind you if it's done again then you're a problem. But everyone I've ever explained this to got it the first time and adjusted their Steeming :)

I've seen some pretty nasty attacks on people who were new too. And you're right, we all make mistakes and we learn from them....if people approach them politely, we can listen to what they say and learn to do things differently but if people attack us we can learn to be defensive and wary of people's responses.
I think modeling good behavior is so important if we expect good behavior and you've shown that here, thanks!

Thanks for this message. I always tell the steemians in my group, interaction matters alot. Never spam, or else you will be flagged. The problem is, many of this people begging for upvotes see others doing better and earning more rewards than them and it makes them desperate

I love this comment, I think that with the attention economy, many people have come to genuinely think that fake attention cuts it. People are obsessed with quick and easy gratification and they fail to see the kind of hard work it takes. It is not easy getting people who don't know you to care about your stories. You need a tremendous amount of perseverance and to always stay true to yourself. Still, I find it surprising that some people think we wouldn't do our utmost to protect our blockchain from those who would have us all branded as plagiarists.
