I just had a wonderful meal with my wife and relatively new father-in-law. Sometimes we think we have our own baggage; but then we realize when talking to other people that there is plenty of baggage to go around.
Hearing the experiences of others can often produce biased perceptions about people and life in general. I for one listened and not necessarily judged. I knew the background of a story without the other knowing it.
My father in law admitted in front me something my wife had observed while growing up. Nothing terrible, but something that would irk at someone. I’m pretty good at putting on a poker face; so even when something is suspected and confirmed, I never change demeanor.
But I was then surprised at some humility and admitted truth. When my father-in-law said he didn’t help enough or care enough in certain respects to my wife; I gained a new respect for him. It was not precipitated by my wife either. It was something he had thought about for a long time.
You see it’s not always comfortable or easy to admit when you were wrong or should have acted in a different way. Showing you are genuinely remorseful without being told to do so shows strength and humility. Imagine a world where wrongs happen and we don’t say a word. Instead those who wronged did enough introspection and admitted the truth of a matter.
Although we cannot turn back the clock, sometimes it takes almost a moment of truth to rectify a situation. It’s a reminder to me, and all of us that it’s ok not to be perfect. Our imperfections and our rectifications of them is what makes us even higher than angels.
Sometimes we are just surprised and roused to remember tolerance and compassion because we ourselves fail in one thing; admitting to our own mistakes. I’m not saying we should continuously rag on about ourselves on the inside because many of us already do that! We could and in some cases should just rectify a situation. I know there are some cases where that just cannot be done.
I’m talking about the cold war; the uncomfortable. We all have those unresolved matters. Sometimes, just sometimes the positive energy unlocked from rectifying a negative event is as close to a nuclear bomb going off (spiritually).

Personal growth/change can only take place when we are willing to get rid of pride and be humble enough to admit that we are less than we want to be or just downright wrong. Now that some of my children have left home, I am realizing a lot of my shortcomings. I saw a post recently that stated that we should admit when we were wrong to our children so that they don't grow up believing that they were wrong about something that was not their fault. Don't get me wrong, I still feel that correction and discipline is good for children. We just need to apply those same standards to ourselves so that we will continue to grow and improve our entire lives.
