Using Steemit to Benefit the Charities of the World

The Steemit platform has a great opportunity to really make a difference in this world. Underfunded local charities could post the needs they have and what they do to improve their community and the world. This can be anything from homeless shelters to advocacy on child slavery to animal cruelty or whatever charity is close to your heart.

To keep people from abusing this opportunity for their own personal gains, those who post for charities should use not only a hashtag like #steemforchange or something that would categorize all posts for charity together, but would also need to be posting from an account that is associated with the charity organization.

People can write about what a certain charity has done for them and what certain dollar amounts would be used for (kind of like kickstarter, except the reward will be that you have a chance to make a real difference in the world for good).

An animal shelter could post that with $25 dollars they could provide food for x number of dogs and with $100 they can prevent a certain number from being put down.

Updates or videos should then be posted to document what was done to verify that the funds were actually used in a responsible way.

I love what this platform has the ability to do that is different from other types of social media.

Every vote counts whether you are a minnow or a whale, you still have an opportunity to make a difference.

These are just a few quick thoughts that came to mind when seeing how people are starting to get tired of seeing certain content repeated over and over.

You could contact some local charities and tell them about the opportunity they could have with steem and not only will you bring awareness and business to steemit, but also change the face of what people think of social media when they see people supporting charities in a tangible fiat way.

Please leave your comments and feedback or ideas as this idea is in its infancy and will need the support of some great minds to be successful.

Well I've started trying to get the name of Steemit out there for "charity assistance"... the first donation on my dad's medical bills campaign is now listed as the Steemit Community. I'm hoping having the name out there will inspire people to do similar things and trust can be built with transparency. If you wouldn't mind, check out my update post from this morning to see if it's anything like what you're talking about.

Yes I agree that transparency is the best policy. Any time money is involved there will be people who try to game the system. Requiring some kind of proof or follow up will hopefully prevent people from getting away with that more than once. Glad that money was able to be raised for your father and I will continue to pray for his recovery and that he can continue to bless others with his talents.

It would be really nice, but too much proof would be needed.. to point out... persons, that really need help..

Some trust would be needed but if future support was dependent on a video documenting giving money over to a charity before people voted for a charity twice then abuse could be limited. That's why I wrote that it's in its infancy. There should be a way to allow this to happen, whether it is a change to the platform or making a verified account etc. I figured some people with great ideas might share how to implement this into steemit. It won't happen overnight, but maybe in the future as more features roll out, this can be taken into consideration.
