BuzzSteem Ep. 24 [Why UpVote Bots Must Go, Thunderclap, Account Policing and More!]

in steemit •  7 years ago

Hey guys!
So today on BuzzSteem I talked about:

  • User @ned's general attractiveness

  • The Thunderclap set to take place on Tuesday, February 13th which you can sign up for here:
    https://www.thunderclap.it/projects/67370-steem-capacity-scalability

  • @haejin and his continued decline, who might really be behind @haejin, and the hilariously underrated user @baejin, who relentlessly mocks his account.

  • User @mrpuzzle's discovery of the shitposter @digdag who is pulling in hundreds a week by reposting stolen pics.

  • The importance of policing accounts, and the ever-so-unpopular idea of solving shitposts indefinitely by eliminating voting bots.

  • User @acousticsteveo and his awesome new releases that you need to check out on dsound.

  • User @ashleykalila and her helpful posts about Steem witnesses.

And the Steemian of the day, poet @udezee.

I also talk about how ridiculous it is to grow a lawn in the desert. Sigh.

Anyway that's it for today! Tune in tomorrow for more fresh hot STEEM! :)

Keepin' it real :-D
And in other news, you have @trevonjb voting you up. Oh, the irony ;-)

Haha, I honestly think Bernie Sanders is taking that whole thing a bit far. I no doubt assigned some blame to the people encouraging bitconnect, but I also said that I put just as much blame on the people investing. They're grown ass people, and I don't really feel too much sympathy for either party. I don't think it's fair that Bernie has downvoted him into oblivion though. (Not to mention the fact that prior to that, his vote was actually worth something to the people he followed, and he was known for upvoting a lot of smaller producers. So now when he does give an upvote, it's not really worth anything. Who exactly is Bernie upvoting and helping out? Ugh, so frustrating. Anyway, I digress.)

You should hear the song I wrote for today if you thought this was keepin' it real, bahaha!

Bernie strikes me as rather volatile and reactive. Sometimes he reacts justifiably against serious abuse and other times he seems like the more abusive one.

Between him, Ned, and the Haejin situation there seems to be a lot of SP managed by people without much maturity.

Better watch yourself...you're walking a fine line right now... Don't be a dick. Nobody else has the "maturity" to do what needs to be done to keep this shit alive. Maybe you're looking at it from the wrong perspective.

It's possible. My perspective changes often on this platform. I feel like it's just a never ending onion that I am peeling the layers away from, learning more about everyday. I think it's that way for a lot of users. Most people new to Steem assume haejin is great because he has so many followers, then their perspective changes. No one here is perfect, that's for sure, but I have time and again recognized your efforts in our #fight4steem and believe you have single-handedly been responsible for haejin's recent losses, and that's pretty awesome.

I appreciate your efforts to counter Haejin and I'm not trying to be a dick. I think we're both trying to give Steem as much chance of success as we can, but this is exactly what I'm talking about. If it bothers you that I think you overreact at times then threatening me for mentioning it may not be your most productive approach.

I've been fighting abuse on here enough to have some empathy for how frustrating it is, and I don't have nearly as much of an investment to lose as you do if it gets completely overrun.

Since Steem is a decentralized network there's really no way to control people having multiple accounts. Anyone with an account and some STEEM can create additional accounts, and no one has the centralized authority to stop them or demand phone number verification first. The idea is that each account has to have something invested in it (SP) to have any credibility.

I agree that voting bots should die, but given the above the only way to accomplish that is by fixing the economics of the system. I think reverting the vesting schedule back to 2 years like it was originally would help, and I also think there should be curation penalties for voting against strong consensus. A long vesting schedule should make massive whales less abusive since they know their behavior can have a real impact on the value of STEEM over two years, and curation penalties should make smaller fish think twice about sneaking themselves rewards by voting up their own spam.

Honestly it wouldn't be the first time I've seen a platform like steemit come and go. Won't be the last either. Voting bots do need to go though. I checked into a few of them because a steemit blog recommended it and so I looked through them. I don't find how they're beneficial in the long term, it's best to only upvote content you personally enjoy and if you didn't get any benefit at all from it, simply keep your vote for the next person that can accomplish that task.

I totally agree! I have read all of these formulas for how to make the most you can in curation rewards by upvoting certain content, and I have ZERO desire to do that. If I want to upvote a dmania meme because I think it's funny, I will do so even if it doesn't help my SP or gain me curation. There are more important things!

The way that I personally look at it, this is just yet another social media site and people create content on Facebook, Twitter and now even YouTube without any monetary reward, so I just do what I do there over here. Best strategy. The issue arises though with most people when there is money to be made in using the platform they'll do anything to game the system to their favor, including using bots.

Take ViewBotting on YouTube for example, was very common about 10 years ago.

It's not just bots, but also whales taking $20 SBD payments for nondescript activity. Bots like minnowbooster do actually make you more than what you pay, I tried that once, and can't say that I lost. I'm split on voting bots, because this platform tries to be 2 things; 1 and investment and 2 a social media platform and there will always be someone that can buy their way in with $100K or more and start near the top. Then again, they paid for that.

I'm not saying that no money can be made, but I am pretty much done trying to police Steemit, and highly encourage those who are to just stop. So long as there are voting bots, people will post shit on Steemit and use upvote bots for it, and there's nothing we can do about it.

Thank you for the shout out. You're awesome.

You're welcome! I wish my show reached more people, but I am working on it!

the bots are not profitable right now, but thanks for the video

Right, well and they are quite damaging to the general community's ecosystem.

ELIMINATING VOTING BOTS!!! WOHOOO!!! I'm 100% with you @bethwheatcraft! I already love you for you being anti haejin and anti bot.
And respect for your courage and the brave for shooting against those powerful people. I wrote an article some weeks ago about indirect censorship because of people only having the fear being flagged to death for criticizing powerful users.

It's rather frustrating. I straddle the line between really saying what I want and yet still restraining myself. It doesn't do me or anyone else any good if I offend someone like @berniesanders and have him go through and downvote all my posts into oblivion. Then I make no money and my followers never see my posts.

I hate that everyone talks about Steemit as this perfect oasis to escape to for freedom of speech, when it is just as limiting as YouTube. The most powerful people on here, the shareholders, hold the majority of the wealth, and therefore can absolutely crush someone into the ground for their opinion alone, if they don't like what you have to say. Some of the whales are extremely immature and it's hard to believe that they hold the future of Steemit in their hands. But as I said, if this doesn't work out, something bigger and better will come along! I love Steemit, but what I am really in love with is this idea of independence, decentralization and compensation for time spent. To me time is money, and it's such an evolutionary idea to be compensated for your time, even if it's not a traditional job.

I guess this was just an example because you’re so popular here and opinions about you go in very different directions ;)
