I feel this way because I know we can do better and have great potential to do better for the world. We did and still do have a great opportunity here to make the world a better place & save lives in the process. In the words of Helen Keller:
As a lot of you know * I attempted to start a new trending topic for what I thought was an amazing idea: to turn UpVotes into charity.
*Thank You to all those who supported this at the beginning & for all the kind words!
I knew that there would be skeptics and most defiantly cynics on here that would demand proof and question my good will. So I donated $1k to St. Jude's myself to show that I was serious. It felt pretty amazing to be able to just go onto their website and without hesitation donate that much money. Although I got much support and love from a lot of you out there on Steemit, the posts quickly got buried and It lost any chance of trending. I even imagined bringing a great big check into St. Jude's personally.
So again, i'm not mad, I'm just disappointed.
So here are the final results:
**Charity Totals**
184 UpVotes
but only $21.36

sadly only $6.85

a meager $152.90
https://steemit.com/donations/@blueorgy/i-will-donate-every-steemdollar-earned-from-this-post-to-st-jude-children-s-research-hospital
I'll leave it up to you, I can donate this now and post the confirmation page or we can try to get these posts rolling again. I will of course continue to add up the totals and donate all of it, including this post.
Have a great rest of your morning, day, evening, or night!

With so many projects going, some hard to be verified some just poorly thought of, a lot of "good" stuff will slip through the cracks.
You are disappointed you raised 180$ from 3 posts? would you have raised more begging in the streets? I am not sure but I think what you should be is GRATEFUL.
Yes, it could do A LOT better and children always deserve more but this is just the beginning.
I envision a future steemit where we could "donate" to good causes a percentage of rewards automatically, have a clear tag ' donations " that would work real well.
The future is bright when it comes to donations and helping people in need.
Patience is needed though.

Thanks for the detailed response. I'll start by saying I am grateful, you're right, any amount is a good amount and it would have been hard to collect it on the street (I wouldn't be begging however) but not actually impossible. The potential here vs that on the street is overwhelming and at points staggering.
I am disappointed because even with a lot of "good" stuff slipping through the cracks these posts didn't even begin to break out. The first post, even with a lot of users upvoting ( very quickly I might add) numbers didn't make any difference without bigger fish jumping in. I do consider myself to be patient but maybe it was just my imagination running wild that I could make this happen so quickly.
I will find a way, and of course won't give up anytime soon. I do like your ideas and its something that would be very interesting to ad to steemit. Something sillier to Godaddy except you 'Round Down' for a cause! I did also try to add clear tags, except if they don't get trending they are hard to find.
The future is defiantly bright, I agree!

I've been homeless for years but never begged. I've seen frequently seen beggars make over $100/hour though.
I'm afraid that the pyramid/ponzi nature of this platform will make positive interaction between users and good causes a real struggle because there are so many here with the sole purpose of getting a hit and cashing out. These people are flooding the system with so much crap that the good stuff just doesn't have a chance. I'm glad that they opensourced the code though because I do see potential in the platform with a few minor changes to make posts more visible and to demotivate those with less than altruistic intent.

I just came across one of your charity posts and through it, your others as well. I think your doing a great job, although it could be so much better with a little whale or dolphin love. Keep up the great effort and I will continue to support you in my little minnow way as best I can.

Oh I'm not leaving... Not sure why you thought that but, I'm here to stay. I was just disappointed with the lack of any bigger fish jumping on board with the initiative. I will defiantly not give up any time soon. Just wanted to voice my opinion. Thanks for the words tho!

I just don't understand how the creators of SteemIt think it's fair that 200 votes gives the author $10 and 30 votes $1000 if 1 rich guy voted on it. Clearly the post with 200 votes is much more popular and probably much higher quality.

Well It all depends on the upvoters power, I am still surprised that no whales jump onto any of these posts even with a high number of people upvoting and commenting, the way it goes sometimes!

When I was first told about this site, the person told me that the dev's of steemit were concerned with making the world a better place by helping early adopters/innovators. He had high hopes that the steemit platform/ community would enable innovators that have done well to help others that are struggling to get their ideas and inventions out there. I had doubts because through years of research and experience, I've seen that whenever money is involved with something, the crap and psychos rise to the top but I signed up anyway.
Because I'm not a person that's motivated by money, I figured that I'd be a black sheep here regardless of the quality of my ideas or the posts describing them, and guess what? I was right. A few of my posts got a few views and comments before being buried under drivel.
I was really hoping to find an open minded, forward thinking community here but the very nature of the platform does exactly what western industrial civilization does, create loads of crap and empower psychopaths.
So you and I both are wanting these psychopaths to sift through the crap, and despite their total lack of empathy, find "needy" people to be charitable to. Sadly, I think we're on the wrong platform.

@blueorgy - I just featured the #heartgoodnesschallenge group in this article. I'm hoping to help keep communities like this going. It looks like you might be interested in participating to help get your #steemitforacause group going.

You averaged over 200 upvotes on each of these posts. Are you 'disappointed' that it was just lowly minnows like myself?

I'm actually very grateful for the high number of upvotes from everyone but disappointed that it didn't get trending and attach any larger fish. I'm very much for the minnows and you've needed more then you think. Just right now even with a very high number and rate of upvoting from minnows this didn't get this trending... maybe something to think about.

The trending window is just way too small because of the loads of crap people are posting trying to make a quick buck. I think that when I find a more permanent place to camp that I'm going to attempt to start a movement to use the open source code to make a similar platform that actually has the intention of making the world a better place.
The first thing that will need to happen is removing "anyone can make fast easy money" from the equation. Maybe a user will need to get a minimum level of upvotes and verify themselves and their projects before being able to receive money. Maybe the currency will be setup to only be used within the network, banning it from being sold for fiat or other alt coins, essentially creating a merit based sharing economy within the network.
The second idea to increase the amount of exposure to posts is to instigate a site wide post timer where the site can only take one post every 15 minutes. This wouldn't work for the pyramid scheme side of things but since gambling isn't the motivation, I don't think it would be an issue. This way, each user will have some chance of getting through the majority of posts in a day without having to spend hours scrolling through crap.
The other thing I'd want to implement would be a better tagging system, something that sorts tags into categories and limits posts to only a few tags, preventing the tag abuse that's ruined the chances of finding anything good on steemit.
I saw the potential for this platform in the beginning and realized that with the power that the whales have, if they stuck to their make the word a better place crap, that steemit really could have made a dent but as soon as I started participating, the problems with that idea became glaringly obvious. Their wish to grow the platform by any means just diluted the pool to the point that it's too nasty for me to keep attempting to swim in.
