A Year On Steemit

Rewards

A year ago today, I made an account on Steemit.

At that time, I just assumed that I’d be working every day for the rest of my life, grinding things out, trying to get ahead. I didn’t think that I would ever have more than a couple thousand dollars worth of savings or the freedom to take a chance and change careers, maybe try making a living doing something that I am passionate about.

These days, however, thanks in large part to Steemit and the rewards I have received from it (both the people I have met and the Steem I have received), I have begun think about the possibility of having a different future, one in which I don’t HAVE to work until the day that I die; one in which, if I am still working well into my senior years, it is because I have chosen to do so, not because I must.

This is what writing for Steemit and interacting with other Steemians over the past year has done for me. It has motivated me, inspired me, and given me a new vision of what my future may hold, and those are some incredible gifts.

So, thank you, to everyone who was involved in making this platform and to everyone who is involved in perpetuating it.

Here are some of my thoughts, reflections, and confessions about the past year.

The Luck of Finding Steemit Early On

While it was exciting to see the value of Steem rise to over $2.50 this past June, and while that value increase certainly helped me diversify and begin investing in crypto, I secretly miss the days when Steem was only worth ten cents and a post valued at $15.00 would reward you with 150 Steem. I also miss the earlier days of Steemit when the inflation rate was so high that you could literally watch the Steem Power in your wallet increase by the hour.

At the time, I had no idea how lucky I was to be able to witness these aspects of Steemit and reap the rewards of them a year later. Maybe in five years, if a $15.00 post only brings in a reward of 1 Steem, we’ll all be saying the same thing about Steemit now.

Cheap Thrills

Using the picture upload feature on Steemit for the first time and then never having to resort to the uncertainty of free image hosting sites again was unbelievably satisfying. Outside of getting my first $100 post, finding my work shared in another Steemians curation list for the first time, and being asked to be a judge for a Steemit contest, this very well might be my most memorable moment of the year. That’s how exciting it was!

Similarly, seeing the red notification flags for the first time was pretty exhilirating too. That was when it was really easy to feel like I was witnessing something really huge being built from the ground up.

Silver Linings

Being flagged by a whale for the first time during The Experiment was a real shock, and continuing to be flagged again and again for the next three or four weeks was really demoralizing. That said, seeing my vote raise the value of another’s post by even one cent once the reward pool began to get redistributed was absolutely thrilling. And that thrill only continued to grow as the value of my vote steadily rose up to over a dollar.

A Low Point, Followed by a High One

Watching my curation and author rewards drop all the way down to zero after the reward system changed from a 24 hour window to a one week window while still catching the occasional whale flag during the ongoing Experiment was most definitely the low point of this past year on Steemit for me.

As they say, though, the good follows the bad, and as depressing as it was to see my rewards go down to zero after that particular hardfork, it was just as satisfying to see the value of a week’s worth of posts shoot up to over a hundred dollars after the most recent hardfork.

This Week’s Discovery

We can now upload banner pictures to the header of our blogs with ease. I can’t tell you how happy I am about this and to see that progress with the UI of this platform continues.

Here’s to another year of writing, reading, commenting, voting, and who knows what else.

If you’re a new user on this platform, this is my message to you.

Just do what you do, do it for yourself, and regardless of what comes your way, don’t stop doing it. There are bound to be ups and downs along the way, but if you keep putting yourself out there and interacting with the other members of this community, rewards that you can easily see and those that you can’t will definitely follow.

Cheers!

I really enjoy reading your posts.

A big thank you for all your support and encouragement since i joined.

Steem on and happy birthday :)

Thanks for the well wishes! Let's keep working together in the future.

This is probably one of the most inspirational STEEMIT posts I've read in 2 months since I joined - I love the good and the bad moments, the life changing moments and how STEEMIT has allows you to become or do anything in life - well STEEMIT just helped to motivate you too - )

I think my biggest post so far after 2 months came just the other day and is currently around $6.12 - I'd love to see it reach $10 but I know - time time time - be patient, be real, post often and good things shall come and whale votes will happen on occasion randomly :)

Thanks again!

I'm glad to hear that you found it motivational. That makes me happy. Your day will come:)

:) It truly does - And yes - Patience on STEEMIT it critical to success.. Unless you've got a large bag of STEEM hidden under your mattress.. lol

I plan on just doing what I'm doing in here and trying to improve all aspects just a little bit each day and continuing to learn - Kudos again!

Happy Steem anniversary to you, @boxcarblue. And wish you many many more happier ones! I'm very glad to have come across you here. :)

Thanks! You just made my day and gave me another reason to be happy I joined Steemit!

What a great celebration post!!

A Low Point, Followed by a High One

That was my lowest point too, it angered me a bit! Then the last HF change on my posts payout of that amazing week...wow!!

Wish you another great year of Steemit!! :)

Thanks Liliana! I'm looking forward to it.

That one HF was a little hard to swallow, wasn't it? It took me an attitude check and readjustment.

Very hard to swallow, indeed. I also readjusted my attitude here, I rarely spend much time searching for a post nowadays, at least compared to what I did in some of my invasive plant's posts in the first months. Guess during winter I'll have more time again to write.

For me, I just lost some of my intensity. I'm the beginning I felt very addicted to checking for rewards and posting content daily. Now, I feel less pressure to post, which gives me a little more time to develop my posts, and I also spend more time networking and less time checking the final results.

During that period, I felt like I had to start all over again. I'm happy with where I am and Steemit is now.

Congratulations! I am happy for you, i just join and was approved today. Hope to see more promising journey you had at steemit. As a newbie i enjoyed reading your post. cheers!

Here's a full powered vote to get you started. Welcome to Steemit! Don't forget to make your introduction post telling everyone about your interests, experiences, and possibly what you plan to write about. Including a picture of yourself is also helpful.

Congratulations my friend! You are an important part of my past year here and hopefully more so in the next one coming! Cheers!

Thank you for all of your support and encouragement! It has meant a lot. I'm looking forward to moving forward together!

Happy One Year Anniversary, @boxcarblue!! 😊 🍰
Thank you for taking us along on the ride you had from the early days of steemit... I must say I envy you, and wish I had been there to experience all the ups and downs as you have described. Well, as you said, others will come along and say the same about me some day (I hope!) So, I guess it's only appropriate now to say: Steem on...!!

Thank you for joining me! Steem on ...!!

🙂🌼

Congrats. I'm glad I stumbled upon your posts on Japan. Steem on! Here's to another year.

Thank you for the feedback! I definitely plan to keep busy here.

Happy Steemiversary! Sounds like it was interesting seeing the whole thing take shape!

I wish I could say that I joined earlier, but I spent about a month spying on a friend's post and wondering what the heck this place was. As I've learned since, hesitation isn't often a virtue in the realm of crypto, though it definitely has its moments.

Agreed on the hesitation. Although hopefully plenty of new opportunities still to be found!

This is just the beginning, I think. Do you know about the Tradeqwik Exchange and Viva? Very worth looking into. Their TQS Token pays dividends on 20% of the exchanges fees. There will only ever be 100,000 TQS released and your cut of that 20% is directly proportional to the amount of TQS you own. As the exchange grows, TQS could become very valuable, as with many other Viva assets.

I've heard of it but not looked into it (there are so many shiny things!). One to add to the list!

I would move this one to the top of your list; )

You got 150 Steem for a $15 post? Damn, I am way too late on STeemit.

It wasn't easy to get a $15 post back then. You really need a whale or a curation group to notice you, but yes, posts used to bring in a lot of Steem. And for a while, the Steem Dollar stopped being given out because the value of Steem was too low to support it.

Either way, if you want to really participate in Steemit, I recommend powering up all of your posts until you reach a goal of 5,000 or 10,000 SP.

I cannot afford doing that as much as I would like. I live 100% of what I make on Steemit and I am supporting my wife and baby daughter with that. Without Steem Dollars I am lost.

That's amazing that you can live off of your rewards here. I hope someday, though, that you can build your SP because then your curation rewards will increase, as will your self vote if you choose to use it. That ought to give you a little more security.

Happy anniversary! I was just sitting down looking at my laptop and remembering the first, very clunky computer we had and how incredibly long we had to wait for an internet page to load and thinking how easy it is to get used to incremental changes. I'm guessing we'll get used to all the changes here too. Sounds like it has been an up and down year of tweaks of the platform and you've been here for them all, with your positive attitude. I joined in Oct 2016 but I only recently started to get to grips with how it works and started posting and reading more regularly. I might well have been here for some of this but I only remember the last HF. I'm still in a haze of trying to work out what's happening, but I'm largely just letting it seep in.
So! You can upload pictures directly in steemit now and add banners? I know you can upload pics directly in Esteem, so I tend to use that [despite its clunky betaness]. Where can I find out how to do this stuff?
Thanks
Sally

I haven't been here for everything, but I got in fairly early and began being a daily user right away. If you want to upload pictures into a post, just open the Write a Post page and you will see blue font in the text box that relates to picture uploading. You can click on that text and select a picture from your phone or computer. If you are on your computer, all you have to do is drag an image file into the post's text box and it will upload for you. As for the banner pics, open the settings tab that is hidden beneath your profile picture. There you will see different options that are available to you.

Thanks for info. 😄
I'll give it a try. Great improvement.

Your welcome.

Happy Steemit-anniversary, @boxcardblue ! Thanks so much to share your thoughts about this community and the good message for newbies! ^_^

I thought it might be fun for new users to read about the ways this platform has changed in just a year and gain a little more perspective on what has happened before they arrived.

I also thought it might be fun for older users to remember some of these things.

Thanks for commenting!

Congratulations! :D @boxcarblue Cheers!

Thanks! Your one year anniversary must have come and gone too. I feel like I remember reading a similar driving post by you a year ago, it might have been the first post of yours that I read. Time flies, doesn't it?

Congratulation ! ^*^

a good story to hear

Thanks. It's been a pretty interesting year. My experiences and involvements here have dimefinitely been in a state of perpetual change.

Great bro, happy steemit birthday. long way to go.

Thanks! Your anniversary will be here before you know it. I'm curious, if you describe yourself as only 40% introverted, would that make you an extrovert;)?

Congratulations to you!
I enjoyed going through your roller-coaster journey on Steemit since the Beginning of the Times. Very well expressed. I'm fairly new here. I hope you will keep cataloguing your journey until a Steem is worth $15 and then beyond that. It would be great to read that some day. Looking forward to it.
Have many more happy Steemvarsaries ahead!

Thank you @xyzashu. A $15 Stem is pretty unimaginable now, but you never know. I didn't think we'd be seeing BTC at $4,000 these days, but a lot of people did.

Welcome to Steemit. Stay the course.
