An Olympian Needs Our Help Steemit! (Please Read This If You Have Ever Been Passionate About Something)

in steemit •  9 years ago  (edited)

The harsh reality of most Olympians is that the financial struggles are always an issue no matter how well they do.  It really depends on the sport and the event within that sport.  Some of the very top Track & Field athletes are well off but it is a very steep drop off and it depends what country you are from and what event you are in.

Olympians have put in years of sacrifice and forgone a professional career outside of sports to represent their country.  I have known some Olympians that are $60,000 in credit card debt and have had family members hold off their retirement to help their kids continue to train to represent the United States on a world level.

Cyrus Hostetler embodies the unbelievable sacrifice and roadblocks that athletes must endure to reach the highest stage.

The Injuries

Throwing the javelin is extremely brutal on your body.  Imagine running as fast as you can and sticking out your leg to stop yourself in an attempt to transfer your energy into a spear that weights 6 times as much as a baseball.

Here are the injuries Cyrus has overcome.

  • 2006 - Torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
  • 2009 - Tore his ACL, MCL, lateral meniscus, and a 1cm tear in his joint capsule.
  • 2010 - Retore his ACL.
  • 2015 - Shoulder Issues

Despite all these issues he was able to make the 2012 Olympic Team and compete in London.

A couple of years ago he decided to move to the Olympic Training center in San Diego and really focus in on the 2015 World Championships and the 2016 Olympics.

USA Track & Field ended up cutting him from the program saying that he had a 0% chance to win a medal in 2016.  He decided to stay there and had to pay to train at the center and live outside of the Olympic Training Center.

The thing you have to realize about the US Olympic Training Center is that there are more people training there from other countries than there are American athletes.  Other countries Olympic teams are often times better funded and pay for their athletes to go to training camps at places like the US Olympic Training Center.

This makes it very tough to have any support for the athletes from the United States.

After USA Track & Field disrespected Cyrus and many other athletes by kicking them out of their training situation Cyrus didn't let it stop him from becoming a Two Time Olympian.

At the 2016 Olympic Trials that just took place a few weeks ago, he dropped a huge BOMB!  Breaking the USA Olympic Trials Meet Record and securing his spot on the United States Olympic team!  Here is the video.

My Connection To The Track & Field World

I was a Division I Track & Field athlete myself and yep..... I threw the javelin as well.  I also continued to throw after college.

Also my first company revolved around the sport of Track & Field and one of my goals was to help fund elite level Track & Field athletes to help them with their training.  I was only able to help out a couple guys.  The numbers were never strong enough to really make a huge impact like I wanted to.  In one of the previous videos on here I was talking about online business and was showing a DVD that I produced for that Track & Field community.

Cyrus Has Tried To Gain More Funding

He ran a GoFundMe campaign for over a year and was only able to raise $1,255.

My Plan

I'm hoping that the Steemit community can come together and UPVOTE this post and I'm going to take the Steem Dollars and convert them to BTC and then to USD and give it to Cyrus before he leaves for Rio on the 9th of August.  Also his 30th birthday is on the 8th of August and if we can come together to really help him out and not be so stressed out financially that would be amazing.

Hopefully after the Olympics go well for him he is able to close out the season in Europe.  There will be another month or so of the season left and possibly get him competing in a Steemit.com Jersey!  I also want to get him up to speed on having his own blog on here.

He would be the first Olympian blogging on this platform I believe.

Conclusion

The Olympics in my mind are one of the coolest things that the  world is able to agree upon.  It is a peaceful competition of the worlds greatest athletes.  No matter what country you are from if you have ever worked really hard at being your best at something.  Playing a musical instrument, playing a sport, programming, art, anything........ Then please help Cyrus defy the odds and the naysayers and overcome some of the financial burden that representing his country has caused.

I know Cyrus from the Javelin Throwers Unite Facebook group and was seriously thinking of doing this myself to help him out. I'm also a Javelinist and I know the struggles with all the injuries and how hard training is.

Hopefully the Steem community can show some love. You can read more about Cyrus and his struggles on his personal blog. http://cyrushostetler.com/

Thank you so much for your help! This will be huge to help Cyrus out and can also be a huge media push for Steemit.

OK, i was just able to add 1.20$ for your friend. I am a huge olympics fan and will go to watch your friend if we manage to crowdfund enough votes for him!

i think its an awesome attempt and i hope that one of the whales votes you up!

please keep us updated !

one more thing, i think this campaign would have had more chances if you included a video of your friend talking to us !

But anyway! i upvote this, and hopefully others will too !!

Thank you for your support!

you are welcome !
its a very good cause, i hope more whales will vote for him !

upvoted !
also wanted to ask: shouldn't he get support from the government or something just for reaching the Olympics games?

Thank you for the support! In the United States the government doesn't provide any support for athletes. The governing body for track and field here is USA Track & Field and they gain their revenue through membership fees, apparel and events. Most people feel they misuse the funds and oftentimes the athletes don't hardly get anything. Cyrus will have his travel paid for to the Olympics but he has been training for years with little to no financial aid. So the hole gets pretty deep for these athletes.

I've upvoted because I think this sounds real enough, but I do want to know, what is your relationship with Cyrus? Are you, for now at least, someone who has no contact with him?

@pfunk The javelin community is fairly tight so to speak. I have competed against Cyrus before and have provided a lot of moral support for him because we have went through a lot of the same things as far as training mainly online through facebook and a track and field forum. He knows who I am and all that but I never trained directly with him. I assure you I will be doing videos of getting him the money and if you look back through my other posts you can tell from my "pool meetings" that I'm real and all that. https://steemit.com/steem/@brianphobos/steemit-pool-meeting-3-making-money-online-intro-to-my-experience-with-online-marketing-w-brian-phobos

Good luck to Cyrus, and all the athletes. I hope this post can raise lots of money for him.

@nathanjones I hope so too. This could be a huge chance for major press as well. If we can get enough I'm going to also release the story to FloTrack.org , NBC, BBC, RunnersSpace, LetsRun .....etc....etc.... To blow the story about the power of Steemit UP!

GO Team USA !!! And come back Safe!!!

Yeah that is right! I'm sure everything will be ok but the Zika stuff is scary.

The olympic village is scarier haha. Fires, leakages, flooding, you name it.

Yeah I was hearing that too. I think that is why a lot of people are getting there a littler later than normal and closer to their competition dates.

Apparently the fire was deliberately set by the workers who proceeded to run up and grab cash and whatever goodies they could while the occupants were made to evacuate. Crazy stuff.

What a great post!
I really hope you can help him get to the Games.
That would really promote and show the power of Steemit on the world stage!

This could be huge for Steemit. Poor Cyrus only made $3,000 last year and is living off food stamps. That is the sad state some of our best athletes are in. If Steemit can just upvote this like they did some of the makeup posts and all that stuff then it could make a huge impact for him.

Good luck, I hope the whales respond accordingly!!

@ned @dan @berniesanders @smooth @itsascam

All will be well

I hope so. I just have to get several whales to see the post and make this work.

Cyrus the Virus is back and strong as he ever was. It would be cool if the Steemit community could sponsor this Olympian. The Dogecoin community had huge publicity when they sponsored the Jamaican bobsled team to go to the Olympics.

I agree Steve! How do you think USA Track & Field feels after betraying "Cyrus The Virus" and then having him emphatically winning Olympic Trials with a new Olympic Trials Record. They will probably want to keep his story hushed up off the TV Airways but what if the Steemit community rocked the Boat by giving Cyrus huge funding and then sending out press releases to all media outlets!

That would be legit. Maybe he would wear a Steemit shirt during warm ups or something.

He wouldn't be able to at the Olympics because he would have his Team USA warm-ups on but hopefully after the Olympics he can wear Steemit gear!

with my steem power i can only contribute 1 cent, upvoted and goodluck

Thank you! I know the feeling but your vote helps and if I can get this past 100 upvotes then maybe a POD of Whales will see it.

Upvoted. I do hope that this post will have an impact.

Good luck to Cyrus. I will follow him at the games.

Thanks @ervin-lemark I have been promoting the post hard and I will probably have to lick the whales blow holes by sending them some of my Steem Dollars...... I'm just trying to do everything I can to make this happen.

Do what you have to do. I feel for you :)

It is almost 2am out here in Arizona and I'm trying to really push this thing hard. I have to pull through for Cyrus

Go Cyrus Hostetler, what an amazing man!
I went to the London 2012 Olympics, it was amazing and lasting memory. More should be done to support athletes from all countries. Theses are the people we want our young people to be aspiring to be, especially in societies where obesity is a growing issue. Let's promote the athletes (well done @brianphobos), rather than the kardashian's (I'm too old to know who else is trending- sorry).

@opheliafu Yeah, maybe instead of investing so much into weapons and military build up we can promote peaceful competition. The crazy thing is that a guy like Cyrus is considered a professional track & field athlete and he has to live on food stamps. It is the harsh reality but he has pushed through and I feel like the Steemit community can help him and benefit from the huge press this could bring if I can get this accomplished.

This is showing in the UK at the moment, we have a lot of advertising from banks and supermarkets with athletes because of the past Olympics.

I know at the end of a day it's selling a product, but it's also getting across to kids that the Olympics is cool. And generating big money equals funding!

For bolt and the others who have been placed in ads it is great. It is good for the whole sport. Usain Bolt has monetarily been the most successful Track & Field athlete of all time. He makes around $18 Million / year which is great. He is the fastest man to ever walk the planet and it will be hard for anyone to break his records for a long time. Unfortunately there is a very sharp drop off in pay for others .

Nicely well done on the article, bro! I hope that all the best works out for your friend. Upvote!

Thank you for your support. I feel like the Steemit community has the power to help out big and gain a lot of promotion this way but it takes all of us and including the whales.

This is really cool. Upvoted!

Question -- what percentage of the earnings of a post can be converted to liquid cash in 7 days?

@ntomaino As soon as I get the payout of Steem Dollars I'm going to liquidate that into Bitcoin, Then to US Dollars, And Give it to Cyrus.

Good luck for your friends, sorry only can contributed via upvote

Thank you for your support!

Upvoted!!!! Hello great post thanks for this. I recently found a post around here from a steemit user who I feel really deserves a couple up votes. When I read his story I literately cried. Please Support thank you!

Thank you for the support!

I hope he attached steemit to his uniform and socks logo :)

Wow, this is a wonderful use of the Steemit platform and really reminds me of what Dogecoin did on reddit. For those of use that don't know/remember the Dogecoin subreddit got a bunch of people to donate Dogecoin to get the jamaican bobsled team to the olympics! They actually managed to get Jamaica and many people from India's team to the games. Everything was converted into fiat currency was transferred. I believe bringing this to steemit was an excellent choice and I look forward to seeing your friend at the Games!

@defango What Dogecoin did was amazing and was a big media push. This could be the same thing. If we can pull this off for Cyrus I can get it pushed out to all the media outlets and it would be huge. We have to get the whales attention for this.

Bookmarked for a read later.

Great story @brianphobos...upvoted and look forward to watching him Rio..... and Steemit can help! @ned @dan looks like a great opportunity?

Thank you for the support. I'm pushing hard to get this seen by @ned and @dan This is a huge opportunity to help out a great athlete like Cyrus and get some huge press for the platform.

@brianphobos, I hope to see Steemit come to support a lot folks who otherwise wouldn't have it. In the US, we like to watch sports and the Olympics but as a society we really don't support them financially if they aren't pro. :(

@patrick-g Well the sad thing is Cyrus is a "professional" track and field athlete. He made $3,000 last year and is also on food stamps. I really hope Steemit can come together and make this a reality. All it takes is a group of whales to upvote this and I will do the rest and get this story out there to the media outlets.

I contributed a few cents with my upvote. Best wishes to Cyrus!

Thank you! Poor Cyrus only made $3,000 last year and is on food stamps. Hopefully the whales can upvote this and it will be a huge story of how the Steemit community helped a broke Olympian and changed his situation.

I am sure, once the whales read this, they will be happy to give their votes !!

This is truly a good cause, and an Olympian on food stamps... the whole system itself is wrong. us government should pay for each of them instead of spending money on unnecessary things.

So lets keep voting this up! come people !

Best of luck in Rio!

Sorry I missed this earlier. Hope this gets more attention.

@thecryptofiend No problem! Yeah I hoped it would have caught on better with all the whales but every bit counts.

I contributed with my upvote, it is little but it 's there, good luck to cyrus

Everything counts!
