Are Bots killing the interactions between Author and Audience? [ #OriginalContent | #ReadingTime: 5 minutes]

in steemit •  9 years ago  (edited)

Have you ever started to reply to a comment without knowing if you're writing to a Human or a Bot? If have been posting in the last week you know what I'm talking about...

There are some Bots we know and have ignored like @jarvis or @confucius but lately, the number or automated replies have increased exponentially and with replied that leave the author questioning if it's a real human giving feedback about your post, or if it is an automated soul?

Either way, this affects the overall eco-system because authors may not reply to a real user thinking it's just another bot leading to a decrease in interactivity between both sides. This gap is increasing day by day with new bots been added to make automated replied and automated upvotes and if nothing is done, and with the rising AI we may reach a point where it's almost impossible to distinguish Human from Bot replies. It's nothing new nowadays, and personally thinking about this is actually kind of disturbing and fascinating at the same time.

Bots are like "ReplyMiners"...

Users may be thinking "why are my posts being bombarded a few seconds after publishing?" and the answer to that question is quite simple. Those bots are seeking to curate as much post as they can, they do massive replies and those massive numbers of replies will be reflected in the daily gains regarding curating rewards. It's as simple as that, those bot's are taking now fighting for the first line in a concert, and if the concert starts to get more and more fans commenting after that automated reply from the bot, they will earn even more in curating rewards.

Will we see Author Bots soon?

Will "Author Bots" be the next step to mine more efficiently? Oh well, thinking about the logic evolution I think it will not take long for the "author bots" to start posting contents that may be so well written that even a human can say it's not a valid content for the platform. Give a Bot a good database and good lines of code and he may very well be posting under #fiction or #writing without anyone notice it's actually all fantasy and it was not born with a creature with a soul.

Where can we draw a line?

This is a good question that raises a lot new questions. The first thing that the creators / programmers of the author bots can argue in favor, is that whatever is coming out from that bot is something new and that tale posted under #fiction may be as interesting and enigmatic as a tale written by a human, and who can dictate or ban such content? On the other side of the specter would be the radical ones that would seek to find, identify and make sure to penalize somehow with counter bot's that would red flag that content.

Personally, I have mix feeling about this, I found it interesting just for curiosity, what would they write? but on the other hand, I think it's not fair to human users that need time and a lot of thinking process to reach a final piece ready to be published.

And for you, what is your opinion about this question? Leave your opinion about this in the comments below, and by the way, say you're a human just in case!

Curiosity: This year an AI wrote a full movie script... so maybe all I wrote isn't so far fetch after all...

An "author bot" would be retarded... what's it going to write.. 0101010 it there is no opinion it can formulate.. emotion to drive motivation or no inspiration to make it WANT to express what it doesn't feel. Author bots ... impossible.. we need not worry about that. These other bots tho... I'll piss on them after a day in the desert and a case of bitter beer.. the worst piss imaginable

Author Bot will be a reality with the rise of AI for sure. AI already doing ART ... it's just a step to more complex things in my opinion... never say never

I have to disagree with you on this point.. replicate art, maybe... but to be able to express or create something original... noway. That's what makes us special. The Pineal Gland is the basis of our imagination and creativity... dreams, nightmares... terror happiness. Art thrives on those "feelings" it can't be computed, processed or understood by 10101010

I am human and this is my comment!

The number of robots has increased dramatically. When I started I only saw wang, now I get many more on a post. As for the author-bot I didn't know that I robot wrote a script. That is interesting! I'm a human by the way!

Too much Bots here in steemit.

yap, like a plague!

Bots are an issue. I never know who is real these days.

are you? :)

As real as a heart attack lol :P

Bots are an issue for sure, but the site and curators seem to do a very good job of trying to get it under control. I think as this site matures it'll come up with some kind of a manual on how to detect and notice bots easier

@rem870man - How will you identify a bot that writes abstract fiction? and posts every 4h intervals?

Ha I have no idea. But there's much smarter people than me out there, someone will figure it out. Hopefully.

I often wonder whether it was the bots that initially got posts trending. Once they were trending, real people continued the trend.

what makes a post to be trendy is the first and second upvote from a whale.. after that roads open... ;) (in my opinion)

Nice article ,

hum.. are you a bot or human? :P ... it's just like this... I really don't know! LOLOL

great post I think bots of any kind should be removed its a stain on steemit

oh and btw I'm human ;)

Feel the same, not easy but I'm 100% for humans and death to bots! :P

The second question is ... Can a computer write a decent screenplay? It can definitely write replies in steemit that could likely pass many tests.

It's like computer viruses and anti-virus. A perpetual battle.

@gikitiki I think that at the moment, I think AI only can write abstract poetry as it can be seen in the movie in at the end of the post.

An author bot won't be much of an issue because it won't be able to pass muster as authentic content and/or interesting content. All it can do is copy and paste existing content or use syntax spinning of existing content which is essentially somewhat readable gibberish.

See:

Don't forget that AI is going fast.. this year an AI wrote the script for a movie... is very abstract but it's real and in theaters -> https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/jun/10/artificial-intelligence-screenplay-sunspring-silicon-valley-thomas-middleditch-ai

with the silicon @piedpiper guy :)

Still have to pass the AI test, is it called the tobor test?

Turing, after Alan Turing.

That's right! Thank you!

And as I said before, gibberish. The movie was funny only because the dialog made no sense and the cinematic production values (actors, costums, music, etc.) emphasized that point. The AI script was meaningless other than it formed sentences in English about a science fiction plot.

I will say that at some point in somebodies lifetime here AI will be the real deal but not yet.

---Edit---

Is the soundtrack lifted from Battlestar Gallactica? :)

isn't there a couple bot users on twitter? I'm pretty sure I've seen pieces on them

Love it , reall human for quality post

Thanks :)

I don't think they are. In a perfect world, they'd actually make this interaction better by keeping unwelcomed comments [ made by bots ] at bay. But yeah, until we get there....

Perfect world is utopia :)

great snips on getting those bots. Bout times somebody name that bot Jarvis.

Bots are a serious issue. I too stopped myself from answering to someone several times because I thought that he might be a bot. In such cases one solution can be looking at his other comments. At least that's how I deal with them.

yap, it's very annoying at this point... let's hope "they" get this problem under control or else...

Thanks for this post, I'm curious if there will be away for users to click a button that doesn't allow bots to vote/comment on their pieces?

that way if some like them great they can use them and have their "feedback" on their pages, while those who don't wont have to deal with it on their work.

They could implement some sort of captcha when casting an upvote for example. This would kill bots right away, either friendly or foe

ahhh yes that would work an optional one, so the OG poster chooses to "protect" their piece with it or not

Wise man's cup is filled, leaf blowing into eternity?

Outlawing Bots is like outlawing guns ....

I've watched Sunspring before! Haha, it was really odd and there were a lot of lines like 'I don't know.' But in the future it'll get better.
