My Suggestion for Steemit (July 6, 2016)

in steemit •  9 years ago  (edited)

I recently made a comment about this on another thread, but felt it deserved it's own post...

The Problem
If Steemit ever wants a possibility to scale (believe me, I want it to) the on-ramp needs to be FAR easier.
After I registered , I spent a significant amount of time differentiating between Steem Dollars, Steem, and Steem Power.

This site can be a great tool for introducing people into the world of Crypto.
I mean, what's a better motivator than being paid? However, the entire platform is quite overwhelming for a new user, and would be even more overwhelming to someone new to Crypto.

NOTE: I understand many early adopters have experience with Crypto, but we need to think long-term. If this site is ever going to reach its true potential, it needs to be noob-friendly.

Possible Solutions

1.) The entire platform is revamped. Having a new user see four different numbers in their wallet (Steem, Steem Power, Steem Dollars, and Estimated Value) is a bit much. All these would need to be condensed into one or two values. This probably isn't the best solution.

2.) An interactive tutorial. Some sort of interactive tutorial would do wonders for new users. Needs to be jam-packed with big red arrows, bold text, and inviting font. Of course, someone experienced/already familiar to the site should be allowed to just skip this.

3.) ??? Share below, I'd love to hear what others think...

Yes too complex for mainstream. And you forgot to mention the steam breaks down into VESTS which also had me confused for awhile also. A tutorial at signup would do wonders for newbies.

Yep. Honestly the entire idea of Steam Dollars also seems pointless.
Isn't everyone just going to convert it to Steem anyway?
Same with account value. I don't see the point of it even being there. People just wanna know the money they can cash out/use immediately.

Steem Dollars is cash...

Not exactly, you can't send it to your bank or anything.

The idea is to become unbanked...

Yes it does intimidate a non-crypto user and I faced this while I was trying to get a friend over. I did try to explain stuff and it was all good till we got to the "private keys" and she freaked out completely. For a newbie into crypto it can be a big challenge having to understand new concepts. So i say we could get this simplified in the begining.

Maybe we just need Deposit, Withdraw, Transfer, and estimated value in the wallet. The rest can go into a Investments tab...

Transfer and Withdraw are kind of the same thing so those could be combined too..
