Today I wanted to share with you, how to alienate your fellow Steemians, with your comments on their articles. I've noticed lately, that we are getting some real, friend-losing pros, joining Steemit; so I just wanted to highlight their sterling work.
So without further ado, let's find out; in just three easy steps, how to lose friends, and alienate people...
1. Make A Bad First Impression
Have you ever been to a party?
Of course you have...
If you haven't
You might just,
want to
read on....
Because it may enlighten you, as to why nobody ever invites you to their parties.
OK, have you ever been to a party, and you meet that guy or girl?
You know the ones I'm talking about? The ones who come and butt into your engaging conversation, that 3 of you are having in the kitchen, next to the fridge full of beer, ice and cheap vodka.
You are talking about, what must have been a whopping fuel bill for the Death Star, and in fact you all agree that the war between the Empire and everyone else, could so easily have been avoided, if The Emperor had only used a more environmentally friendly power source, like solar energy.
When suddenly, that guy comes over; the first thing he does is laugh at a completely inappropriate moment. Nobody said anything vaguely funny at that point; and the worst thing about it was, that it was one of those obvious, stage laughs.
Then, he says something along the lines of;
"Yeah, Emperor, that is so bad; you know? It kind of reminds me how when I was at work the other day selling insurance; did I mention I sell insurance...?"
Ugh, he then attempts to take over the conversation with his boring banter, what's worse is; he TOTALLY IGNORES, the body language of the people he's talking to (at). If he paid a lil' bit more attention, he would realise, they desperately want him to stop, and/or, go away.
But no, he blunders on, even past the point whereby the 3 people make their separate excuses, and get the hell out of there!
"I have to go to the toilet!"
"Me too!"
"Me three! Let's go together"
2. Always Be Closing
Let's stay at the party now; we move from the previously, lively and chatty kitchen, as our friend has all but, killed the atmosphere in there, he has cornered some poor sucker, who doesn't have the will to escape his soul-sucking, conversation.
So we pour another vodka and orange, quickly grab some ice, which is still miraculously in plentiful supply, in the freezer; and then pop outside to the garden.
We shimmy over to a group of people, they are mainly listening to a jolly looking fellow, who is telling a funny story. He is gesticulating wildly as he tells it, and he is constantly digressing into little sub-stories. The fellow is a skilled orator, and proves this by involving his listeners in his stories, and encouraging them to participate.
So you sidle up to the group, and after a while, you too are part of this happy bunch, your laughter punctuating the general hubbub of the garden, and the distant muffle of retro, 90s house music, emanating from the front room.
Then, all of a sudden, another version of that guy, walks up to your group, he too has been drawn to the rocks of sociability; by the siren call of witty conversation.
Unfortunately, he has one agenda in mind, and one only.
You can feel it building like a volcano, as he is stood next to you, it is almost like he is a kid, dying for a pee.
Or perhaps, one with an irresistible secret, which he must tell.. right.. this.. second...
He is not listening, he is simply waiting for a gap in the conversation...
Almost said something..
Not quite..
Nearly there.
Finally!
He blurts it out;
"Yeah! Funny thing is, I'm a financial adviser, I'm big into gold at the mo, and I can get some really good deals, I've been making a lot of clients rich. Here, take my card."
Like a french kiss, at a family reunion...
Ugh, another lovely conversation ruined, we were talking about funny things that had happened to us at festivals. What the bloody hell does that have to do with gold investments??
Prick.
Twat.
Ignoramus.
We all disperse, hoping that if we live another thousand lives, we will never meet him again.
3. Leave Sincerity At The Door
Ach; oh well, maybe you'll go for a dance; from the sounds of it, the DJ is playing your ish, maybe a dance will get you away from these rude and annoying people that seem to be scattered amongst the interesting ones, at this party.
You go back inside; the heat differential between the garden and the house, encourages beads of sweat to spring forth from under your armpits, and atop of your brow. You take a mighty gulp out of your, vodka-filled, plastic party cup; wondering if you should risk bumping into the soul-sucker again, by going for a quick refill before hitting the dance floor.
In your moment of hesitation, you see your long lost friend; Suzanne...
"Hey Suze! How's it going, long time no see! How's Mark and the kids?"
"Kids are great; Mark I don't know, we split up last year."
"No! I'm so sorry; what happened?"
Cue the story of the last 18 months of Suzanne's life, she was devastated, but she's back out there now; in fact, this party is symbolic of her decision to put herself out there again.
For the last 15 seconds of the story, you have been joined by an attractive female in a killer, tight, red dress; maybe she knows Suzanne?
Anyway! I don't want to put a downer on the party; Mark's history now, I'm up for the future! Woo hoo!"
She turns to the lady in the red dress.
"Hi, I'm Suzy, pleased to meet you; what's your name?"
"I'm Jackie, and I just wanted to say that you are so brave, and wonderful, and important, and you are a shining beacon for women everywhere. I really, really, really, admire what you have done with your life. If I could do half of what you have done in your amazing existence, I will be a complete person."
"Wow - You got all that from the last 15 seconds of our conversation?"
Oh man...
They are every-fucking-where!
She's that girl
I mean, does she think that such, misplaced, over-the-top compliments, will get people to like her?
Grrrr.
The exact opposite is true.
You were going to ask her for a dance, now you can't wait to get away from her sexy, yet insincere, ass.
The Importance Of Being Earnest
OK, if you have got this far, and you are a new user, and you would prefer to win friends, and influence people, then please consider the following.
We all love comments on our articles; whether you are the biggest writer on Steemit, or a minnow with one post. This is because, the comments, acts as some kind of validation of the work we have just put into the post. Also, a good comment section, will enhance the article, and deepen it, maybe laying rise to a whole new set of articles.
People can tell if you haven't read the article, but are trying to sound like you have.
(Green plastic frog - I am inserting this phrase, to see if this article gets read to at least this point. The first few people to point it out, will receive a @cryptogee sponsored, randowhale vote. You have to have less than 3000sp for the vote, and your article has to be good!)
- Over the top compliments, are actually quite insulting. Don't get me wrong, I like it when somebody genuinely compliments me. However, when somebody tells me how amazing, my article was and how important and great my other articles are, without even referencing one single word I've written, it is clearly a copy n paste response. Which is really insulting, I'd rather nothing, than that.
The Dos And Don'ts Of Commenting
Don't: Comment on an article, just for the sake of it. Yes it is trending, and has thousands of dollars, hundreds of votes and views. However, unless you feel that you can personally add something above and beyond; great article! Just move on, there are plenty of other fish in the Steemit sea.
DON'T:LEAVE COMMENTS IN CAPS! We all like to shout sometimes, but why do you have to shout on the comment section? Especially if it's frigging unrelated!!
Do: Read the article. We've all done it, just seen the title of an article, skipped to the end, and commented, heck, in the old days, I did that a few times myself!
However two things emerge, when you do that, your comment will seem out of place, and/or worse, you will make a statement that entirely contradicts the point of view of the article, thus making it abso-bloody-lutely obvious, you haven't read it.
This will diminish you in the eyes of the content creator; which is the exact opposite outcome, that you are seeking.
Don't: I repeat DON'T spam your links, I don't know anyone who doesn't find link spamming annoying, so don't annoy people. In case you're wondering, a link spam, is whereby you link to your COMPLETELY UNRELATED post.
Do: Link relevant content. There is a distinction between spamming and linking relevant content, the lines are not blurred, it is not a grey area. It's really, really simple. If so-and-so writer, has done a post about aliens, and you have done a post about aliens, that is acceptable.
If you want to go even deeper, if so-and-so has done a post about alien trigonometry, and you have done a post about alien mathematics in general; EVEN BETTER! Or maybe you have done a recent post about how, alien trigonometry is in use today in Arkansas, and how, that somehow relates to the presidency of the United States, YES KEEP GOING!
This will get engagement, and it will get you noticed, if your comments are thoughtful, and the links, go to relevant, well written, well presented content. Then even more so, will you get noticed/followed, upvoted, and maybe even resteemed.
Dont: Make a comment on an 1800 word article, less than 2 minutes after it was posted, especially if that comment is great article!. Because it's bloody obvious to anyone who isn't a complete moron, that you haven't read it. Just vote, and move on; maybe bookmark it for later, or just forget it, anything than commenting just so you can be the first.
Do: Comment on subjects and issues that are interesting to you; regardless of who wrote them. I know y'all want to get the attention of whales and influences. However you're much more likely to do that, by leaving a good/thoughtful comment on a smaller less popular piece.
Maybe a whale sees you and thinks; that guy/girl's cool, let's see what else they have to say.
Remember
It is easy for people to check your past comments and replies, ergo, if you copy n paste, with a slight, or no variation, the people you're trying to influence into following you, and reading your stuff, will not; and they may even block you, making you invisible to them forever.
You don't have to comment on every article you vote for, you don't even have to read, every article you vote for. However, you should read every article you comment on, if you can't be bothered to read it, that is fair enough, just vote and move on without saying anything.
Less is more; I am far more likely to follow somebody, who has made a great statement on my article, and then I go to his/her profile page, and I find out that they have made, other worthwhile comments, on other blogs. Maybe they are low in number, yet they are high in quality; that's the sort of person I want to engage with, and guess what? Most people would agree with me.
Be patient; Rome wasn't built in a day (what fool suggested it was?), so take your time, and look upon your comments, as a body of work. Maybe you're not the best at writing whole articles, or getting your ideas across. However, you are good at adding valuable assessment, of other people's ideas. Good comments, will end up getting good rewards.
Long is not always good; I like a nice detailed comment sometimes, and occasionally give them myself. However, you don't have to write War And Peace, just to prove you were paying attention. Sometimes, a funny meme, can blow me away, at others, it's a detailed answer. I think it depends on the subject matter, and time of day...
Home Time
So that's it; either be that person, who everyone wants to avoid at the party. Or be the other one, the one that everyone feels great being near, and wants to talk to, and share time with; be that person.
I don't just talk the talk, I walk the walk
SO WHAT DO YOU THINK? ARE YOU GETTING LOTS OF UNRELATED ANNOYING COMMENTS? OR DON'T YOU SEE IT AS A PROBLEM? MAYBE YOU ARE STRUGGLING TO BE HEARD, AND YOU JUST WANT TO BE NOTICED. WHATEVER IT IS, AS EVER; LET ME KNOW BELOW!+
I have a suggestion on this topic, which would do great things to address some of the issues raised.

def useful article. I think everyone who reads it can take a good point or two. I hate when people spam on steemit, not to mention the trolls - not naming any names but trolling is trolling and it doesn't add to the conversation.

Examples of those points you highlighted are damn right on spot and it will make all newbies to think while posting. Actually there are people who took steemit as give-some-get-some program.

If Steemit was a MMORPG. Comments would be the first weapon any new player would get. For any newbie, comments is the only means to build a credible relationship with fellow Steemians. We should remember that our every comment is like making a first impression.
Hell, it is even more than the first impression cos someone someday, who doesn't know you, will read that comment you made on some post and will make an impression about you :)

So true! I made a concerted effort to comment on a lot of posts in my first few months on Steemit. I made a lot of the mistakes I quoted, however I learned from them.
I quickly realised that the nature of this platform was different, especially as it is a lot smaller, than the big 3. So people see you again and again, one day that will change, but for now, that's the way it is.

Please don't send me a randowhale, save it for a newer user that could use a boost, but the green plastic frog is an amazing idea. I've been thinking of doing something very similar. That is one reason I always ask for steemians to request the recipe, to show that they read it and encourage engagement.
Back to the point of your post, it is timely and much needed at the moment. I will pass this on to all my family members that have recently joined. Plus, I will hang this on the mirror for me to read, I so suck at commenting, it's an area that I am trying to improve. Thanks for the encouragement

The other day, I read an awesome article on free will, I think it was by @kyriacos. Anyway, I spent ages formulating a great reply, then just suddenly realised. My god; I'm completely waffling!
I've left it to go back to, but yeah, sometimes, I'm just not feeling it. Which I guess was my point, sometimes if you're not feeling it, just leave it and come back later. :-)

So painfully true, @cryptogee. I want to spend time here because I perceive that the quality can be higher than what is available on so many other platforms. But sifting through the garbage is taking up more and more time.
Hmm, maybe for a future fork we could have a filter for Comments when we are reading through them. Make it easier to screen out #ALLCAPS, #mrcopypaste and #uberschmuck. Add in a bot to spot creepy patterns and auto-tag . . . . .
Also appreciated the little Easter egg . . . I mean frog. Thanks for the great read and hearty laugh.

LOL . . love this. I've been getting some of those comments as well. But I have noticed that some people with a decent amount of SP are just commenting a few words to upvote themselves for 5-7 dollars. It's happened a few times.
Yea, yea, yea, I know that it's the Steemit system . . and I'm not exempt from upvoting my own comments. I'll probably do it to this one haha . . but I'm inclined to agree with you: the best comments are the ones that link info related to the OP. Or are memes or GIF's. Not generic "I agree, great idea" or something like that.
Which reminds me of something about those types . . . .

Personally, red frogs are my favourite. I have no idea what I'm doing here.
I am the guy at the party who is chilling in the kitchen close to the beers... I am friendly and witty and help facilitate people with bottle openers, tell them where the toilet is and lend them a lighter. I have weed, but im not telling anyone, and I usually have two or more people chatting about random things with me as my group fluctuates and recycles with visitors to the kitchen... At the end of the night I will be out the back smoking a joint with a few select cool people of my choosing, and days later people will be heard to remark..
"Who was that dude in the kitchen..?
I think a condensed version of this article or perhaps in video format should be mandatory viewing for all new steemians.
Im seeing so many blatent comments that are cringeworthy. We all want an upvote, or a thousand, but try to add some value.
Someone went to the trouble of constructing a well thought out and executed article, so give a little. ;)
Fishing for likes with zero engagement sticks out like dogs balls.

I have been on many forums in the past and the pattern seems to be as they explode in new users the quality of the content goes down. The comments and stuff that you're talking about seem to be that kind of thing but steemit has an intricate way of fending against that, which is really cool. I'm not going to waste my time shitposting if it's not going to do anything for me. I'd rather try and make a good comment and try to start a conversation rather than a bunch of NICE POST!1!!1s

But like another steemian already said, i also think that we have to control that in the near future.

The way I see it is that when it comes to social interactions, online medium has become a tool for many to put out "words" and "fixed beliefs" rather than opinions or their personal genuine thoughts about a topic and why they feel so. Many that are shunned in regular social interaction done face to face, like how you mentioned in the start of the article, find it easy to leave their "words" in random places as they have more chances of being heard (doesn't matter if positive or negatively), without having any dire consequences.
Of course in the long run such comments will most probably be avoided, it still is something that doesn't bother the individual as it isn't worse than what happens on a regular basis. Like another comment said, comments are like a beginning weapon of an MMORPG here, and those using it in a bad way don't have any real intention of playing the game at all.
In the end, the only thing, in my opinion that will change the way things are is for people to be more open minded and a bit less selfish, understand the other person's point of view rather than force one's opinion on others, and try to play the devil's advocate in every situation to see how it turns out. That is, only if they intend to change in the first place.
Sorry for the long comment, reading the article just made me want to share what I felt.

Amazingly accurate and hilarious! I love the party comparisons!
Your bit about reading before commenting is so true, yet mentioned so infrequently around here (as far as I've seen). I hate seeing comment sections where people ask questions or try to make some point that was in the freaking article. It's incredibly insulting; they won't even take the time to read your stance before trying to push their own, even when you're in agreement.
Too many people see steemit as a get rich quick scheme that the social aspect is dying out somewhat. I would rather have fewer followers that actually enjoy what I post and engage me on those topics as opposed to a whole bunch of "you-upvote-me, i-upvote-you" comments. Steemit is for a different crowd and hopefully the people jumping in with dollar signs in their eyes will either catch on or move on.

Yes it's true, it is almost like we have to develop our own, Steemit language, just like FB, Twitter and Insta have their own syntax.
I think there's nothing wrong with wanting to be successful and make money on this platform, however, if we draw too many of the, get-rich-quickers, it will indeed, harm the platform.

Great article! ;p (Was tempted just to write just that and nothing else because I am a wind up merchant.) Really made me think a lot about... green plastic frogs.
But genuinely, I've made a conscious effort not to just brown-nose (although if I like something I don't hold back) and to try and just forget as much as I can about the monetised aspect of all this - and to actually engage with people and the content they write and not just to skip to the end.
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

Haha, I did expect one or two of those. Like I said, sometimes we skip to the end and vote, and maybe even just read a paragraph and comment.
It's just those generic copy n pastes, if they take over, then, the comment sections will slowly die, and I love the comment section. I still get replies on old articles that are not making cash anymore, but it doesn't matter, it still pleases me to engage.
I'll be checking out all you frog spotters tomorrow, I really need to go to bed, but want to reply to the early commenters!

You've made some excellent points about commenting on Steemit that many people, newbies and veterans alike, can learn from, because they're all true. I've witnessed people doing most of the things you've mentioned here, and it's always a huge turn-off. The way you describe it here gives an excellent guide of what NOT to do.

I'm left speechless most of the time. I'm ignoring everyone that post their content on my content comment threads. I feel awful doing this though. So many people seem to need help, I feel overwhelmed along with producing content, curating replies on my post, finding good articles to upvote and fashioning quality comments.
When I've posted my content on someone else's post, it's for a contest or I misunderstood requirments for participating on the post.
I think Steemit needs some kind of TOS document that is included with signup.
Edit, I wondered why that green plastic frog kept showing up I missed the Frog

I have noticed that a lot of people write meaningless comments. I posted my most recent blog about a milestone and honestly... "Congratulations" isn't enough. I wrote much more in there that could have created much conversation but... "congratulations"... While I do say thank you, and I genuinely appreciate green plastic frogs commenting, even if it's boring comments, I appreciate the time that they've taken to come, "read", and comment on my blog. It's a weird conflicting feeling to be unappreciative for something you do appreciate in different ways! A fine line between wishing maybe they didn't say anything, and being find with what they said. :/

Read it, comment when you have something to say, but don't write a book. Engage the person, but don't spam, copy and paste or say, "great article" when they posted 45 seconds ago and you haven't even read it. I can learn these tips. I may even reference this later. :)

Thats great. And yes, I saw that green plastic frog too. But, Im thinking that the eyeball by the comments shows how many people actually opened the article. I keep seeing articles with way more votes than eyeballs, and I was wondering if thats what was going on there. Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

Yeah, unfortunately, because of the nature of Steemit's reward system, we will almost always have more votes than eyeballs.
In fact the other day, I got really excited when one of my lesser rewarded articles, had almost as many eyeballs as votes, and loads of really interesting comments. I was so pleased, because it meant that people had taken the time to read it.
I am trying to do shorter posts; this one not included, because I think that will help with the eyeball 2 votes ratio :-)

That said...what about shy Steemians ? Sure leaving some rando comment that has nothing to do with the article's content should be discouraged - but for those who find it difficult to know what to say...not to be all trophy generation...but they need to start somewhere. Put themselves out there a little. Obviously not by leaving a link to their forex site in the comment section(unless its relevant) - those types are D bags - but hey, is it really that bad getting a few comments from newbies - or just anyone in general as they work on their engagement skills? :-)

Or just quote a line or two from the article and comment on that, I'm lucky, in that I get a lot of good comments. However, there're a lot of newbies who put heart n soul into their posts, so it would be nice to give them a little positive feedback, if only for 1 or 2 lines.

Honestly, I think it's all too late. I feel like the rate of adoption and the power of whales and orcas and dolphins has turned the platform into a circle jerk. Early adopters made the cut to use the platform, but I have a feeling the opportunity to access the platform AND be able to gain rewards for minnows is over unless they have the external assets to buy in.
That being said, I hope I'm wrong, and I'm going to keep trying. But I don't think I'm wrong.

I was about to hit you up with a decent "thank you" meme, but it just didn't feel right. - Green plastic frog though. I know I'm not the first typing that, but I felt like doing it as I've read your entire article. :)
I must say, that I've been to the parties you're talking about. Well, in fact, most of the parties I'm at, includes some of the people you mentioned. - I think you did a great job with the reference and comparison to people on Steemit!
What I'm doing myself lately, is to talk some sense with my readers. I want them to stop this follow for follow nonsense and the upvote/follow-begging. It looks awful and it won't do them anything good at all.
The sad part is, that some people seems to believe that the "instagram technique" will work on Steemit too. - Sure, they might get tons of followers..
But none of them will ever read or upvote the content, so why should they have these followers? - Followers are just numbers. - There's nothing cool about having 5,000 followers if 2 of them read your content.
And don't even get me started on the "thank you" replies...

Hahaha, I tell you what; if you had found a green plastic frog meme, that would have killed me! :-D
Yeah I think you've highlighted why we're getting this current wave of spam, it's because people are using other social media techniques on here. However, we are different for a number of reasons, not least because we get rewarded for our posts.
Also we are much, much smaller (at the moment) than Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, plus it is really easy to check out each other's comments and replies. Whereas on those others, you would have to do a lot of work to find out that the person is just posting the same thing over and over.
The whole 5000 followers, with 2 reading, is something I realised on Twitter a long time ago, I have a nice following on one of my Twitters, and it took ages to build, and I get quite good engagement. Although there you are fighting against the dreaded Twitter algo!
Anyways, thanks for your comment, funnily enough, I've noticed a lot of your comments (and articles), and I tend to like them.

This was the best one I could find:
Time and effort. That is what it takes to build a decent audience. There's literally no shortcuts on Steemit. What I do however, is to encourage & help my readers so they can use my own experience like a shortcut, by not doing the same mistakes as so many other people are doing. - I'd say it goes okay, but I mean, I'm building my audience too so I don't reach out to as many people as I would want. Yet. - With time, I will!
Thanks for the follow, I appreciate it!

Now I just to say mr. rockstar of steemit it seems like you are a little jaded, please don't flag me, do see what i'm getting at. You and everyone has the power to shut there critic up, at least to some degree. That is were I think the over politeness and living in a world were everyone is offended by everything. If you have read my comment up to this point I don't really think you are jaded maybe a little tired of the fake shit, but not jaded. As for me I always say thank you in my comments because I have enjoyed what I read. I don't give out fake compliments they are real to me. I am not the only one that does this I am sure. I totally agree with the fact that many of the comments which are copy pasted etc, are annoying, and do not add anything to the entire conversation, however, I'm afraid that they actually accomplish what the writers look for.
They often do not see steemit as a houseparty where they have to engage and join in the conversation, to them it's a frat party (which is full of "Those Guys", in which the point is to get as many hi-five's as possible.
Imagine coming on here as a reputation 25 newbie.
You get up here, with 0 followers, and you write a post. Doesn't matter whether it's a brief joke or a great piece of poetry, an article,... You are very likely not going to get a single vote (high five) and 0 comments.
And when you comment, especially post HF19 you are not going to get much votes either (and having to read an entire article before commenting takes a lot of time). So again, you will get few votes (high fives) over the course of a night.
But if you simply spam every topic with the same innane comment "Great Post man, really made a difference,... CtrlC CtrlV). You will get upvotes.
Really, check these comments, very often they get an upvote. Pre HF19 there where many people who basically upvoted any comment they got. Post HF19 a bit less so.
So there you go. The newbie actually got what he wanted, a bunch of high fives over the course of the night, whereas hard work might still have kept him just standing hunched over the punch bowl by himself.
I do not know the way out of this either, although I've read about a suggestion that posters should be able to limit comments to certain reputation scores. (These kind of copy pastes are almost always made by >30 reputation accounts).
Or maybe we should just break the fingers (downvote) of that guy who comes by every group asking to high five everyone before moving on.

Then pounced and had an incredible first post.
These spammy comments don't work at all, genuinely.
Why would they, they're value seeking rather than value giving. Just offer value to people, get immersed and have fun. Rather than ... essentially begging.

There was a recent post by a successful youtube channel that is getting into Steemit and their post went on and on about how successful they are.
But when I went to their channel their videos have a bunch of thumbs down and the discussions section of the channel has nothing but unhappy viewers. This is because the voiceover they use is highly annoying and unlistenable and the channel is a cheap ripoff generic Top 5 channel. I'm most certain they bought their subscribers.
But they got nothing but praise in their steemit comments.
Being a youtuber myself and highly vested in the quality of Youtube, I often hold fellow content creators accountable for such atrocities and for ignoring their own fans.
But I guess this type of contrarianism is frowned upon here on Steemit, amirite?

As a n00b who still hasn't fully curated a proper feed of what interests me or the community, I am flicking through a hell of a lot of junk posts. Sorry Steemit, but there is a lot here...
Within these junk posts, there are a hell of a lot of junk comments like you say. I like to think I have enough social empathy to know when I'm 'that guy' and don't let the quality of my replies slip too far.
Steemit is like any other marketing platform and you just can't build the engaged following that you need to be successful by posting the please love me comments. As a user, just don't be that stupid...
I am however not a big fan of the platform restricting commenting on reputation. People have a responsibility on themselves to engage in a meaningful way and if they do, then they are going to grow and the ones that don't are going to drop off.
What is the scope for user suggestions to actually be implemented as platform changes on Steemit? Is this all just talking to ourselves, or does the system allow real change to be made by the community?

HI, thanks for the comment...
I know what you mean, however I think Matt was just suggesting for the first week or two, this actually isn't uncommon practice in the world of forums. Often when you join certain forums, you can't post links till you've had X amount of posts, you can't PM users till you've done Y amount of replies, or whatever.
So, in that way, it sets a standard; people know that spamming is not tolerated, after a short time, you can fully engage. I think it works on some level, but probably not completely; let's face it, if someone is determined to spam, they will spam.
Hmm, that is a debate that has raged on since the inception of this platform. In some ways, it is good to listen to your userbase, in others, it can end up pulling you this way and that, and not giving direction.
Ultimately, it seems if enough people ask for something, then there is at least debate, and sometimes change. Take for instance the latest changes to the voting algorithm, in HF19. This has been something that a lot of people have petitioned for since I joined last May, and finally something has been done.
Whether the hardfork will actually address the original concerns, remains to be seen; however it does show that with enough people asking for something, it can happen.
True; however there is "please love me, because of my style" and "JUST LOVE ME OK!!!" Which is the point I was making. The key is, that Steemit is not like any other platform; on Facebook, you are the commodity, you pay for the platform in time, and you are rewarded by, having your info sold to advertisers.
Hence you can put up a silly picture, and get 400 likes, I think that annoys a lot of people, when they come on here, and popular content, that they post on other platforms, doesn't do well here. Some people adapt, others leave, and others spam.

We have about patience is also a great phrase: "Moscow not at once was under construction (this is Your in the piggy Bank :=)). While I am a newbie and comment on my posts a bit, but in essence. Empty comments I don't like. I agree, that the first impression is the most important, especially in our speedy and informative century. When you, like a comet, for a brief moment get to the focus of attention of the person that has made a reputation for himself, no need to walk around and get underfoot. Have something to say, say it. No, smile and step aside :=))

Sometimes It can be difficult to connect in a short comment, although it sometimes feel like the longer ones don't get read at all. I guess, like everything, there is an art to commenting, but adding to the conversation isn't the same as just saying something/anything.

That is very true, and I myself don't always leave long comments, especially if I already know the writer.
Sometimes short n sweet is the best, it's just when people copy n paste the same answer on 100 articles, it's just spam.
Also, sometimes a; great article man! is all that's needed, I'm not dissing short replies, just lame ones, I've read long lame ones as well, that just wanted to push the agenda of the person leaving it.
For instance, I put out an article on The Mandela Effect, the other day; and someone started preaching the gospel, and leaving links to her religious posts. That was the straw that broke the camel's back for me :-(

Green Plastic Frog.
Very engaging article so far, have to finish it up now (saw the 'green plastic frog' comment, and being human had to jump down and be the one guy to point it out).

Excellent advice, pointers well taken. I am personally just struggling with getting any attention in general, yet also understand patience is a big key in the whole thing. Not just patience but also finding one's "niche" here is just as important. It only stands to reason if one is posting articles and blogs mostly about art yet is following and engaging with people who seem to specialize in cryptocurrency or finance will stand to gain little benefit within their own postings from those they are following and engaging with.
Just my 2 cents worth in trying to understand that whole side of this blockchain front end.

Wow! you've hit the nail on the head there. I have given that exact advice to a friend who joined Steemit. You must follow and engage people in your niche, the more you do that, the more you'll get noticed.
That doesn't mean to say, you shouldn't engage outside of your niche, however like you say, you will get most benefit by lively engagement with others within your niche.

About the party scenario, I've got to say I have also seen that person in the center of everything acting as the benchmark of all relevant conversation and others are crap unless acknowledged by this person. How about that? Has anybody seen that?

I do not believe in suppressing comments of any kind by any means. There are individuals and probably in this platform also who believe that THEY are the benchmark for determining the value of things including comments and blog posts. I am not concerned for "not being paid" for my alternative opinions as might occur here. I possibly have missed your article intent as well. At any rate, thank you for the opportunity to comment.

Ultimately I am saying, you can do what you like; however if you believe that spamming links, and insincere comments are doing you a favour, then I'm just telling you that they're not. I was just trying to do it in a humorous way; hence the party analogy.

Yes there does appear to be a lot of this going around at the moment. But perhaps that is the part of the evolutionary process Steemit is going through. As it grows so too does the volume of these type of comments, as highlighted by the various examples listed above.
Evolution being what it is, helped along by articles such as this one, we as a species (Steemit users) will adapt and change as necessary. We do tend to gravitate to the more intelligent and thoughtful, or the users who can communicate in a funnier, or wittier manner.
And away from the cliche and obvious spam comments. Keeping attention on the issue with articles like yours certainly helps.

Yes, and the evolutionary example is a good one, as I mentioned to another user, I'm just wary of it turning back into what we had last year. When people try and game the system via the comments section, and they are successful, it spreads.
Before you know it, we are swimming in spam! :-) This is the story I wrote about it last year, when we were getting lots of spam-bots.

I'm wary of a repeat of that also. Hopefully the collective consensus to move forward and creative a successful Steemit can override (through technology as well as agreement) any spammyness lurking around.
Thanks for the story, just going to read it now :)

You provide a lot to think about. On one hand you join and you see how nice everyone is - you think "well, I'm a sincerely nice person, and when I give a compliment, I mean it". But I guess I just never considered that trying to be nice and genuinely tell someone that you are potentially over the moon with their work, or really compelled with their information, that it would potentially automatically be considered insincere. Its almost enough to make someone just.. like, super paranoid.. you know.. all the damn rules.. I'm like "I just want to interact with a bunch of badass people out there and make friends with new like minded people - and how else are you going to meet new badass people if you don't try to find some way to interact like, commenting - especially when you don't have a ton of steempower influence right now, but have a lot to offer the community". But I agree, there are those that really stand out as being completely useless to any of this and should spend at least a little more time trying to be genuine and using the platform the way it is intended with high quality, low quantity posts. It takes me about 2 days to complete a post - so I try to put the effort and time to make it feel special and to hopefully inspire others. I saw your hidden secret "are you really reading this" plug of a green plastic frog.. I read your entire post ;) I like your voice and look forward to reading more - very informative, eye opening and rather entertaining.

That is why I took a long time to write this, I was genuinely worried that I would put people like you off.
I think if you're genuine, it comes across, I was just specifically trying to talk about the spammers. As you interact more and more you'll see them, we had a whole load of spam bots last year, and it really threatened to ruin the comment section.
So 30 seconds after you put up a post, that took 3 minutes to read, you would have like 50 comments, all saying variations of the same thing, it was a nightmare. You couldn't find any genuine comments because these bot ones were taking over.
I even wrote a post about it: https://steemit.com/steemit/@cryptogee/the-silent-screams-of-the-steemit-botwar.
So I guess I'm a bit sensitive to that, and don't want that again, nobody does, trust me, it was terrible.
Anyway, I hope I haven't put you or anyone genuine off from commenting, no matter how short.
As I said, it's not about hard and fast rules, just apply the same social rules as you do in real life, and you'll be fine :-)

Aww, thank you for taking the time to write this and reassure me of really what specifically you were targeting. I really enjoyed your post and since I am definitely still learning, I am trying to soak up all the information I can get. I will read the post you reference above - looking forward to it! Totally understand and I completely agree - being genuine usually is an energy that transcends and can easily be picked up on and it is really obvious when spamming is actually occurring. Anyway, hope you have a great day and thank you for your insight :)

Wow. I don't read a lot. Actually, I was often criticized because of that, when I wanted to become a businessman, I had to read A LOT and I started enjoying a new way to live my life out of ignorance. Now that I'm using Steemit it's giving so many different ideas and feeling and your green plastic frog just shocked me, thanks for sharing this and thanks for explaining the behavior we newbies should avoid.

I find a lot of these comments irritating for sure. I'm kind of leaving everyone to be sheriff of their own posts I guess. I haven't personally been impacted too much by the spam comments, but I feel like I may start flagging them on my own posts. I think it's valid in order to sort them out by moving them to the bottom & possibly hiding them, and if done by enough people it will reinforce what is not acceptable etiquette on Steemit and make the spam practice non profitable for those who do it.

Yeah me too, I have been tempted to police other people's posts, but feel it's not my place to do so. I started by giving people a chance to remove their spam, but now, as you say, I'm just going to flag obvious spam.
I guess this is kind of like the early days, when we had an influx of spam-bots, like you say, if we just keep flagging, it will discourage people from doing that, they either won't comment, or will improve the quality of their comments.
So win, win :-)

Honestly, I don't get many of comment like that myself. And if I do I just say "Thank you" and move on to the green plastic frog.
