Hey everyone,
If you're looking for a funny meme, this isn't the post for you.
Anyway, last night I was thinking "How can I become a whale on steemit using the skills I've honed for the last 10 years?" and I thought that if I can generate sign ups and content creation of others, it would work much better for me.
We all want to be like @ned, @dan, @blocktrades, @berniesanders, @smooth, @dantheman, @tombstone, @itsascam, @rainman, @steemed, @summon, @blackjack, @cloop1, @steempty, @wang, @firstclass, @skywalker, @fuzzyvest, @steemit200, @complexring, @riverhead, @enki, @roadscape, @wackou, @xeldal, @freedom, @nextgencrypto, @clayop, @kushed, @witness.svk, @proskynneo, @smooth.witness, @analisa, @au1nethyb1, @bitcoin2016, @arsahk, @silversteem, @paladin, @satoshifund, @datasecuritynode, @alphabet, @excalibur and @cryptoctopus and that's where an affiliate program would come in. I know a ton of super affiliates for other websites and I'm sure they would jump on board to help drive even more traffic and sign ups for steemit.com
I know some of those accounts/people I mentioned above are bots, but they're still whales :D
I'm in a few pretty amazing skype groups that are invite only and it's full of very well known Online Marketers, so if I were to just post in there saying "Hey, steemit now has an affiliate system!" I'm sure at least half would sign up and generate traffic lol :D
Anyways, to the affiliate system.
There could be two ways this can be done, and each has their own pros and cons.
The First Way:
Getting paid to generate sign ups. Each person gets a $10 deposit of steem into their account when signing up. So let's say we help generate a sign up, we should get a commission for that person registering to become a member of the steemit community. But how much should we make? I don't think an equal share of $10 would be ok, it would have to be $5 or less.
The Pros of this:
- We can help generate sign ups and get paid $5 or so per sign up.
- We can focus our skills on getting sign ups and not posting content and curating where we aren't as strong.
- No up front investment from steemit since this is an affiliate program.
- Help increase awareness of Steemit through our websites promoting out affiliate links.
The Cons of this: - People can create bots and their sole purpose is to create accounts on steemit for a commission.
- There might be too many people wanting to do this and not know fully how to execute a plan of action to obtain sign ups.
Solutions: - There would definitely have to be a system in place to restrict signups if they are behind a proxy. You won't be able to get everyone, and even if you do, there will be genuine people getting blocked.
- Affiliates don't get paid until the user who signed up shows they are a contributing member and start a few conversations or contribute to posts.
The Second Way:
After we get a sign up, we get paid a percentage of their earnings. We don't take money from the user, we get paid in steem by steemit.com directly into our profiles. A lifetime, or recurring, commission structure would be best for this. The commission wouldn't be 100% or even 50%, I think 10% to 20% would be a better price for recurring commissions.
The Pros of this:
- There's less risk of bot created accounts since we wouldn't be getting paid for sign ups.
- The user would have to contribute to the community before we would even think about getting a commission.
- The payouts wouldn't be a hefty burden on steemit since not all users will become whales. It would be nice though :D
- The system can be completely automated on the backend and a users post doesn't have to be monitored like a hawk for fake upvotes.
The Cons of this: - You won't get as many people wanting to become an affiliate to drive sign ups.
- The commissions will not be very high at the beginning unless you get writers that are amazing... which is pretty rare.
- Affiliates will drop off at the beginning because they won't be making $1,000s a day.
Solutions: - Find affiliates that already know what they're doing, like myself and a few others that are considered "Super Affiliates". The lifetime/recurring commission structure will ensure they stay around and build up their profile.
- Make everything automated and streamline. If an affiliate doesn't have to ask questions they will be happier to push traffic to your platform.
So what do you guys think?
Is there a steemit rep out there that can comment on this?
Thanks,
Cryptommy

Any affiliate program will cause that you will think more about your earnings rather that future of whole community. I am against any affiliate program.

I've seen plenty of websites flourish with a well laid out affiliate program.
Some people don't want to post because they aren't confident with their writing skills. I myself think I'm an OK writer, but I do know a lot of super affiliates who would rather sit in the background and grow a website. Some of these people have been to only reason some websites make any money.
Not having an affiliate system will reduce the amount of exposure you can obtain. Sure a website can get big over time, but if you want to be the best, you will need people helping.

for many people steemit already is something impossible. A lot of people will think that whole thing is a financial piramid. Adding a affiliate program, will give them one another premise to think that this is actually true.
You have to remember, that you main motivation should not be money. You should do good job regardless of fact, whether you get paid for that or not. Good job just deserved to be done.
If you will do it properly, then you will receive a compensation from community for your time.
If someone main motivation is money, and not creating good things, this person is potentially corrupt-able.

Hmm. This doesnt make any sense bro. Most of the users on STEEM I would say are professional content publishers of some type (bloggers, youtubers, authors, photographers, videographers, comedians, etc). Are you saying that they produce content for the love of it...and are not interested in getting paid. The whole point of STEEM is to reward folks for producing original content, and introducing others to the opportunity. Why would you not then have a mechanism to track referrals?

I think the concept is brilliant. Especially to internet marketers and people who want to earn online. If Steemit had an affiliate marketing program it would help this system grow and flourish more.
However, I think you should really look into the ADZ Project. And their social media platform ADZbuzz. They have an affiliate marketing program offering 10% referral commission on every referrals purchase, plus their concept and what they have to offer will blow Steemit out of the water.
I am not just saying that, but it is true. ADZ coin is around 1-2 cents now, but it will sky rocket like crazy. It is such an appealing concept to anyone who wants to earn a passive income online from its profit sharing system.
Anyways, I use Steemit to promote ADZbuzz https://goo.gl/OprIWU
But since there is no affiliate program here there is no real incentive for me to promote it, and since it is not easy to earn from it really people would quickly abandon it, especially if they solely came here to try to earn. I am earning a nice passive income on ADZbuzz for doing nothing, and it is hard to gain a cent here for writing an article.
However, I still use Steemit, because I see the earning as a bonus and I don't try to earn from it, I just use it like I would any other social media platform that is non-paying. And if I earn in the process then it is cool.

Hey @adz4life,
I'll check it out.
I do agree that people come here to make money but quickly leave because it's not an easy task. They see the front page where people are making thousands per post but what they don't see are the hundreds of thousands of posts that don't have a single penny.
I do really like the platform, I just with there was an affiliate program set up so that I could use my skills to their fullest :D

Consistently making money on this platform would be difficult for the majority of users, a few may get fortunate and earn on a post, but the majority will just earn cents.
If people are coming here to make money they will be leaving in a hurry... this is not a good platform to earn a stable income stream at all.
For the majority of people, this is just a platform to maybe 'win' some earnings, and not count on it.

It definitely could. But until it is live here is an alternative solution: https://busy.org/affiliate/@pampermenetwork/want-to-refer-users-to-steem-but-have-no-ability-to-track-registrations-or-benefit-from-earnings
