At first glance this chart looks really bad, users continue to sign up but activity has fallen or remained flat. The activity per user was hit significantly from both sides.
Up until a couple of days ago we had a significant number of fake account signups. We were able to slow, but not eliminate, this signup abuse by adding Google's reCAPTCHA. You can visibly see the reduction in the rate of signup the past several days.
User Account Spam
In addition to accounts being created by abusing our signup offer, many people have been creating and mining accounts. Name squatting due to STEEM DNS has also caused many accounts to be created for this purpose.
Voting and Posting Spam
Over the past month we have been systematically deploying solutions that mitigate spam. We have imposed stronger bandwidth limits, minimal voting thresholds, and reputation systems. The result of this anti-spam measure is a net reduction in votes, posts, and replies.
Conclusion
It is tempting to look at these charts and deceive ourselves into believing there are 80K real accounts or that all the voting, posting, and replying activity in July was real. Believing these things reinforces our own biases and desire to see Steem grow overnight.
The problem is, if we let ourselves believe that lie, then we must also believe that Steem is losing traction / retention. All of a sudden our "harmless" self-deception has us in panic mode as it appears something has come unhinged.
The more realistic way of viewing things is to greatly discount the number of accounts by removing duplicate miners, name squatters, and anyone inactive. This will give us daily active users which is around 1200 and weekly active users which is around 8000. Then filter all of the spam / automated activity from the month to get a better signal of organic use by real people.
After doing these things you will see that Steem is in fact growing, quality is improving, and the sun is shining on all things Steem.
A lot of people are complaining and panicking, I know Steemit will grow, changes are being made. Things are improving. People need to

Haha - Kaylin and I already had the "who cares about the price in Beta just stick with it for the long haul" talk on our pages, knowing it's going to grow exponentially with real users in no time. What I can't wait for is an interface to buy more Steem that's "so easy a caveman can do it!"
Right now I'm stuck waiting 7 days for my $25 to get from my bank to Coinbank's system to buy Bitcoin, then convert that to Steem. If my cyber-defense buddy (seriously, what he does for a living) hadn't walked me through the Coinbase/Bitcoin/Steem transaction via FB messenger, Id've probably been too scared to even try. I know it's all coming tho because the community is making it happen. I'll be patient.

I agree, I think the mainstream audience just needs some time and maybe a little nudge for them to realise the potential benefits of a platform like Steemit could have on society and humanity. Also there needs to be a fundamental shift in thinking, which can be difficult for mere mortals like myself. I agree that we need to just give it some time and see where this vision takes us. In the mean time let's enjoy our status here as an early adopter guys and contribute to the community in whatever way we can! As I suspect things might change a bit when everyone else arrives :)

I disagree. While the number of account doubles, the number of post has decreased in the absolute term. Therefore, we should admit at least one of the followings: 1) Users are leaving and/or 2) Users are less participating.

When I first found Steemit I was aimlessly posting as much as I could just to be noticed, because I didn't know what the site wanted or needed. Then after reading some articles by much smarter people, I began to only worry about the quality of my work.
Yes, the amount of content I post has dramatically decreased, but I am much more engaged now than I was back then and I fell very successful.
I imagine my story is not uncommon here, because I am also witnessing a lot more high quality content, by people who used to post anything and everything in an attempt to find their place.

That totally makes sense. I was posting a lot of old content to see what stuck in the beginning, then the newest FAQ came out insinuating that only 4 posts a day could get maximum payout, so, I dialed it back to and started putting up 2 to 3 posts a day and adjusting to follow some patterns from successful users regarding the type of content. My results were that I have ended up in the top 25 in payouts and I've only been here two weeks. I agree with your assessment.

I grew up writing for the stage. Anarchist's Almanac is probably my most traditionally crafted piece, of what I've shared on here. From 8th grade on I was also home schooled, so, I developed my "style" if I have one, from reading classics and then bringing it into a more modern setting. I've been writing professionally full time for about 8 years now, but this is my first chance to actually focus on my fiction instead of constantly worrying about freelance client deadlines. You should check out the Hunting Bigfoot story, which I will be expanding soon, it's pretty different.

I was the complete opposite, I received a terrible education and I still have trouble reading, but I wrote for a creative piece for a newspaper for about a year. I continued to write screenplays, but Steemit is a different beast altogether. This is my first time writing in such fast paced in environment, where instant feedback is freely given. It affords me the opportunity to experiment and learn different techniques.
I will definitely check out your Hunting Bigfoot series. What type of freelance stuff were you working on before?

There was significant posting spam too, which has declined for various reasons (and Dan addressed this specifically in his post!). I've pointed out before that I believe the most abuse-resistant metrics we have are edits and deletes, because there is little incentive for spammers to ever do those things, and little reason for actual user behavior regarding those to change systematically. If you look at those metrics you see limited growth but no real decline (ignoring one-time bump in July after the mega-payout).
In fact those metrics probably understate growth by a small degree because of a change that was made that disallowed edits after the first (usually 24 hours) payout. Previously that was allowed. So this would tend to reduce the number of edits over time relative to usage.
Downvoted to remove/reduce platform updates from reward pool payouts. Please implement an alternative method of visibility for these.

I also think there was a surge of users who came on expecting instant riches in the wake of the massive price rise of STEEM these people had unrealistic expectations and I think they may well have left. They should not be counted as serious users either.
The whole point is trying to get quality content and I would have to agree that although posts seem to be decreasing the spam content has reduced and the poorly thought out posts also seem to be less.
We shouldn't get complacent but I don't think there is a reason to panic either.

Edits were 2,300 art 8/2 and 2,294 yesterday. Actually it is a slight decline. However, in terms of edits per account, it is neaely halved. If we assume 90% of newly created accounts are fake ones, it still decreased by 10%.
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:
Submit
We don't know the number of fake accounts but it may very well be >90%. Please reread Dan's post and consider all the different reasons that accounts may be created that don't correspond to an actual person (including something he didn't mention -- actual people who do sign up but do so multiple times).
Furthermore some portion of users dropping off is normal and expected, especially in the time immediately after signup. It isn't ever going to be for everyone; some will try it and not find that it is their thing. It is impossible to ever achieve success with every single user.
The problem is not enough real users signing up. If we use your number of 90% fake, that gives us about 150-200 "real" users per day signing up. That is nowhere near enough to get us anywhere at all. And by "problem" here, I mean just low growth right now. If in the future enhancements to the platform and greater exposure increases that 150-200 (or whatever the number), then it won't be a problem that the growth rate was low early.

I completely agree. I do not find the current level of growth encouraging, though apparently Dan has some data that paints a different picture. I asked him for more detail, and it will be interesting to see what that is if he provides it.
My only disagreement (or perhaps questioning is a better word) with your interpretation is whether the issue is less growth in real users (bad) or a decline in user participation (also bad). In reality it is probably some of both, but I do feel you have been painting too harsh a picture on the latter, especially when you presented the chart from Dan's post without accounting to any meaningful degree for the issues both he and I have identified with it (fake accounts, antispam system changes, etc.)

There is going to be a certain amount of attrition as people show up, throw crap at the wall to see if it sticks, find no one likes their poorly conceived drool here any better than the last place, they don't get rich and they leave. Those who are adding substantive content are either here for payout, or building an audience, or ideally, both. Those are the ones we want to keep. I've been looking at the metric of "unique authors per day", which I think has been relatively stable over time.
There were some spikes and dips, but we're definitely not hemorrhaging users and the sky is not falling. I've got a lot of faith that if we continue to improve the platform, all of these numbers will continue to increase ;)

If you have data supporting the bolded statmeent than please share it. My own analysis agrees on the point of fake accounts, voting spam, etc. but does not agree on the point of there being meaningful ongoing growth.
This is misleading, although your next sentence explains it better. To expand for clarity, there are still a "significant number" of fake account signups. No one should be mislead by continued growth in registered users that is not matched with growth in usage into thinking that indicates a huge drop in activity per real user. It does not.

I have been tracking user activity by level of Vesting for the last two and a half weeks ago. (Source: Steemd Distribution page)
Daily active users under <0.1 MV has fallen dramatically - from over 4,000 to under 2,000. This loss is surely spam / bot accounts.
However, daily active users above >0.1 MV is rising gradually. I'd expect a majority of these to be actual accounts which contribute to Steemit.

Facebook has been able to hook users by the "like" system, which is very addictive. Now, "abusing" something like that may be morally questionable, but my thinking is that a popup notification for every upvote is something I'd like to see. The point behind this is that it would give users a "reward" every time they get upvoted, even if the upvote in question is "super valuable" money-wise.
Also, I made a post about adding "view counts" to posts. It'd be useful for us to know how many people read our posts, even if they don't upvote.
There would be two effects: it would guide us to make content thatb more people like, and it would give us something to "follow". People play online games because we have this "innate" need to grow, develop and evolve. Seeing our view counts go up would be hooking.

I agree 100% with everything you've said. For the long term, steady organic growth is much more crucial than "going viral". Loyal Steemians will continue to slowly gather and learn how the platform works and how to positively contribute to the experience. While phases of people rushing to signup, possibly urged on by rapid price increases, are just noise. Most of these people will disappear along with the crowd that accompanied them when they fear the fad is dying out, and they'll move on to the next "big thing". Of course Steem is more than a fad, it's unique in so many ways beyond most other blockchain-centric technologies, but most of these people are in it for a quick buck, and don't take the time to learn what Steemit truly offers.

Never really thought about it this way. It's good news that we are indeed headed the right way. In my mind, I don't know why....but I just know that Steemit is gonna be a grand success.
Having said that, user retention should be the next area of focus and I mean more widespread rewards for everybody. I know with time the wealth is getting distributed and that is fine for the long term but solving issues in the short term is important too.
All in all I am very happy at where things are headed! good luck to all of us! :)

Thanks @dantheman for the realistic update. I find it surprising how some very successful users of steemit (@stellabelle) are being negative after they have gained so much from their experience here. This usually stems from unrealistic expectations of how steemit will grow.
In the case of @stellabelle, I just had to dedicate a Steemit Funny cartoon to that sad post: Steemit Funnies #7 The Mental Synereo Post
I hope you got a chuckle from this comic.
There are also many big account holders who are powering down, which causes a sense of panic among the community and creates questions for newer users.
Personally, I'm only powering up and using my mad trading skills to generate steem on the open market, which I will then transfer back here to become steem power. I see this trend of the big powering down as an opportunity for us smaller ones to climb the ranks. Steemit is weeding out the weaker hands. Also I use my blog to teach others to trade steem on the market like me follow suit. Just yesterday I was asked by Coinigy, (a major cryptocurrency platform that I use daily for my trading) to post my videos promoting steemit and the use of coinigy, on their Youtube channel. There is something statistical data can't show.
That is, "how much time of my free time do I spend on steemit?"
I, human, have real life stuff.
I sleep, I go to toilet, take care my kid, clean up house, do my daytime work, eat...
Rest of my time, mostly I steem it.
I read a lot and post sometimes. I upvote only what I really like, after finish reading it. I also do spend time on planning my own project using steem.
I go to poloniex and see how the price change, I try to guess how other people think about today's steem price.
Simply steem consumes my precious time.
For those who are actively criticising Steem also spend their time by steeming.
They may be right. Then we have chance to escape earlier thanks to them.
If Steem can prove its resilience against those criticism, under full freedom of speech, that's the best cast scenario.
In short, this is the formula.
(how much time steem it) / (how much free time do you have).
It can't be shows by this kind of chart.

A few months ago I was a terrible writer and Presenter; I was shiftless, lazy and disrespectful of my readers to be entitled to a clear concise message within my writings.
Last month I upranked from terrible to a bad writer etc. this month I am just a poor quality writer, yet I post and gain 2 upvotes per Post daily. For a poor writer i feel it is my due; what i dislike is that quality presenter get the same sort of attention.
I myself felt there were 2,500 people per day here and weekly 10,000 but still quality posts were buried into the depths of the BlockChain. People are not going to repeatedly spend a day crafting a post and then be ignored. Steemit will lose its potentially best people.
Once you insult these people they will not come racing back, today I posted a Blog Post about donating money to gamble toward rewarding a quality post in a lottery after it had been completely ignored.
Now there is the change of more money toward posting than curating, we need to be encouraging people to post less and be rewarded not for posting but for improving the posts of others.
I love the idea of Steemit but I cannot and will not continue to be as active here for sixty five cents a day. True this is the only website that has ever paid me anything and I believe in the Steemit mission but unless Steemit starts making some changes where quality people are not just forgotten, then I will rearrange my schedule to five days of fun websites and two days of helping Steemit change the world : )

I see. Yeah I wasn't sure what % were real accounts. I think it's good to be realistic with the numbers. You guys seem to have been doing a good job limiting farmed Facebook accounts as well? I remember Stellar had a huge problem with that. They hit 1 million users in roughly two months, but 99%+ were probably fake. They mainly used Facebook auth so curious to know what you guys are doing different. Stellar is a good case study and I do agree vanity metrics are overrated. There is real activity here. However retention should remain a top priority as well as now growth since our real user base is smaller. I still think referral rewards for recruiting members that earn a certain reputation score (50+ or so) would be a good system to implement. We can always test it out for a few months and make adjustments.

All short and to the point. Thank you for keeping us in the know, @dantheman! It is very important for us. I hope you will do it regularly.

What data do you have to back up the claim that real activity is growing? You declare real activity is improving without any numeric analysis to back it up.
I'm not trying to hate. I think Steemit is awesome! I'd also like to see some data on real user activity.

Will be many ups and downs on our steem journey for sure.
How about if I run around like a chicken with its head cut off until I am tired in a mad rush panic.
Then go get a goodnight sleep. And wake up to a wonderful world of steem! :)

Is there anything in the terms and conditions forbidding the registration of multiple accounts? I see some language that could be construed as such but maybe it's time to update the T&C's with better guidance around signing up new accounts?
How many accounts is considered abuse? Is running multiple niche focused accounts considered abuse? Maybe I'm blind but the policies on account signup don't seem crystal clear to me and I've seen use of multiple accounts being openly talked about on Steemit.chat as being common practice.

At the blockchain level there are no such rules. In terms of web signups of free accounts being given away by Steemit Inc, there can certainly be such rules but the bigger issue is actually enforcing them. Dan's comment about adding a CAPTCHA to deter abuse was one step but clearly there are still many that are being created.

Yeah, it's the free accounts funded by Steemit Inc I'm referring to. There seems to be a little haze around the rules of having multiple accounts and any ramifications that could bring in the future.

Ultimately as long as the project is still considered beta it shouldn't be a terrible thing anyway. If it is no longer beta and the numbers look bad then that is grounds for concern.
I've had three people tell me they were not going to use the site while it was in beta mainly because they didn't like one aspect or another of the voting. I tried to tell them it is better, but they looked at older posts and it is largely how voting works that scared them off.

Having this kind of information shows the real picture and I personally appreciate you sharing the facts with us all.
It also to an extent shows why many great posts still go unnoticed in my opinion. We just don't have a large enough user base "yet" to cover all topics and areas of interests. I know I personally have enjoyed the posts I have put together here for steemit so far, of course, like everyone else, wish to have seen a better reward for most of them. But knowing the actual daily user is only sitting at 1200 and a weekly of 8k shows we are still in the early stages of Steemit.
Steemit is still an embryo baking in the oven. I sure hope and I am excited to see where it goes from here, the potential is great for so many with true organic growth. The spam accounts and spam signups only hinder and hide the truth of growth.
Thanks again for being transparent with all us steemians!

There is no reason to panic as far as the drop off in posting, ect. A lot of people tend to get excited about a new platform, then slow down after a few days when things aren't happening as quickly as they had hoped. This is a good thing for Steemit in the long run, as it will weed out some of the trollers and site hoppers. And you will always have a few casual users who only log on once in a while. I do think that taking measures to reduce the number of fake and duplicate accounts is a step in the right direction, but not necessarily to weed out all accounts that aren't monitored by a human on a regular basis. After all, what would happen to poor @cheetah? And bots are an integral part of the voting power on Steemit. It's interesting to watch the site develop as the back and forth will continue between Admins and those looking to make some easy Steem Power.

@dantheman - Steem is complicated or at least still feels complicated... it's difficult to explain to people... 3 currencies, various ways to get paid, but how to track, etc - any tools and guides to help new users (and consolidated in an easy to find way) would help with retention and usage imo.

I also think that users are not participating. They come, they look, some of them just try to make some easy cents from curating and they disappear! My latest activity just proved me that less than 10% of the voters read the content before voting and around 4% are commenting using general non-related comments, even if the content is Steemit related...sad, but true!

It is good that you are actively monitoring the user behavior on the platform. It also is very reassuring to see how visible you are which is very different from what one experiences on other social media networks.
Your diligence is paying dividends even though it may not be apparent.
This is why I am writing this so you can know that your presence is being appreciated.
I think that, as more apps appear that enhance and simplify the user interface, your retention and other factors will see massive growth.

Maybe I say not so great idea.
But why not to make an steemit app, for mobile what will be binded with Google Play market and Apple store?
If you want to register, download an app to your mobile and activate\register your account on Steemit?
Or this step will be harmfull for your anonymity?
For "stealth" users and registrations I was see today post where offer to by an extra anonymous accounts.

I signed up about a month ago and aside from a few replies i have yet to make any posts. Trying to figure out the ins and outs, generating content, and watching how other users use steemit. @adamkokesh said he did something similar in his introduction video. I love the idea of how this site works and cant wait to drop my steemit exclusive content, ive also never really done much on youtube either and while most of my content will be video ive had a hard time deciding if i should do them steemit exclusive making them private on youtube, or releasing via both outlets at sametime. I decided to start off exclusively steemit and see if we can build some steem but more importantly reach and interact with some like minded people. Id be interested to see the same chart next month to see if the posts/replies increase. Where as i agree and im sure there are plenty of bot accounts, have seen a few that where "click baity", but i also feel there are a bunch of lurkers waiting and lurking to figure it out as i have been doing. So far i like it, check it daily, and cant wait to start submitting stories.

As someone who has covered Twitter as a business for the past two years, it seems like there are really only two issues to focus on.
First, if Steemit wants really explosive growth, it needs to be easier for the average Joe to understand. It won't get there over night. It took a while for the mainstream (non college students) to understand Facebook. Twitter is still having this problem. Steemit has a huge hill to climb in order to help people understand crypto currency. To be honest, it's all a black box for me, but participating is fun, so I continue.
Second, the site IS set up for success. In a decentralized structure, we ALL learn from our mistakes, and adjust accordingly. When any system LOVES small, non-fatal mistakes (like kinks in how voting power is calculated, or bots taking over, etc), and learns from them, the power of the system increases exponentially.
In that light, this is what I see happening with fewer posts, as @dantheman references. People are learning from their mistakes--they are posting less crap. That's a good thing.
Overall, the ecosystem has great potential to be an example of antifragile growth.

I think user participation is going to shoot up. There are fewer posts now to some degree because people are figuring out how to make fewer, better posts. There is also overall sentiment and short term users that were real, but only posting for the money. We are about to enter the second wave..

Allowing sign ups using only social media accounts is a bad strategy. Account farms / clic farms own social media accounts in the tens or hundreds of thousands. The absolute minimum should be social media account + SMS OTP using a number that hasn't already been used. This can still be gamed as in some countries, it is easy to procure SIM cards wholesale on the black market, but this still increases significantly the cost of creating fake accounts.
Another approach that can be combined is that users should be referred by other users that have achieved a sufficient level of reputation. This would slow down somewhat the initial growth, but due to the 6-degrees of separation principle, it will soon enough cease being a problem as everyone will know someone who can invite them on Steem. To avoid a spammer referring his own accounts in the thousands, accounts should be allowed to send as many invitations as they have MVests or levels of reputation, or other such limiting factor. This would force account farmers to buy invitations from other users (hereby increasing cost and effort) or to "level" many user accounts (which again requires socially validated work). Gmail for instance was invite-only at the beginning, and this helped it maximize it's ratio of real user sign-ups during the phase where it was still honing its business model. Facebook was Harvard and then ivy-league university only etc.
A last approach is hashcash-style in-browser PoW running in background while new users create their account and type their X first posts to increase even further the cost of creating fake accounts.

Anyhow, it would be a huge advantages if the creators of steemit could make login more authentic. Concerns about the steemit network getting overrunned by spamming, plagiarism, copy paste or scams is a hard nut to crack atm.
But as the internet becomes a more basic requirement for citizen all around the world, there seem to be hope for the us.
In some countries, you have to verify yourself with a unique login and a so called Key-Card(Given by the government) wich contains security numbers to verify your real identity.
In the future i see this taken over by fingerprint technologies or iris-scan for sure. But no matter what, steemit is ready for the IoT and i truely hope our creators is aware of this :)

Hi @dantheman,
There are some things we could consider. For myself, I would like to see a platform like this be a Facebook killer ultimately. However, I know that is not steemit's initial aim.
Regardless, we need to focus on usability.
There are some simple tweaks that are worth considering. First is the point made by @beanz - registration is not braindead. It really needs to be. The community will determine the value of content, it is not something we can or should control. If the platform favors quality posts, then quality posts will be rewarded. I know the password thing is for security - but the average user is just not gonna adapt that. I totally get it though... there are just some things we can't protect users from.
Other things I have noticed myself are how voting is done. The vote button itself is separate from the vote tally indicator. With a minimalist design approach, the layout becomes absolutely key - these two elements should be seamlessly integrated. And, since monetary values are such powerful eye candy, you can afford to move it to a lower priority location - people will find it.
I suggest the following changes for the sake of usability:
Reorganize the "action panel" below comments and articles, align it left. Keep this "action panel" identical in layout for both comments and articles: "Vote button | $vote_count with drop down | Reply (with $reply_count integrated) | Share "
Reorganize the Article "information panel" to include "$elapsed_time ago by $author (with drop down and current rating) in $primary_category | $current_value with drop down." This can be printed twice, top left under article title (as it is now) and floated bottom, right next to the action panel.
Slightly tweak the Comment "information panel" to "[$author_avatar] $author_name (with drop down) $elapsed_time ago | $current_value" The position now is great. And then, just add the action panel as described in 1.
The money part is cool - no doubt. But let us not become money grubbers on the platform. ;) Ultimately, it's about sharing valuable information.
The need here is to maximize the ease and obviousness of social features, and the same for generating content. After that layout is perfected, and people aren't "learning how to use steemit", you will see a natural organic increase in user retention. Right now, usability is not drop dead obvious, so people have to "learn how" to use it, instead of it being immediately obvious from first glance.
These are just the first changes I advise would benefit usability. Still need to improve registration, content creation, etc.
I could wireframe these suggestions out if you would like, perhaps for some steem. LOL! But seriously, I ran a web marketing agency until I retired early, and I miss it (but not the hours...). Besides... I would love to kill "the" Facebook. ;)
All the best!

Dan, even if you were to allow that 80k legit users showed up and signed up, and you have 8k weekly users, this percentage is incredibly high among social media platforms, where more like 2% active users is the norm for larger platforms.
