Venezuela and Nigeria Climb the ranks for Steemit.com traffic

There have been some pretty big changes in the traffic trends for Steemit.com recently. Firstly, it's heavily down worldwide.

Without trying to identify the actual cause of the traffic decline, we can see that it is driven largely by an exodus of Korean users. The web rank of Steemit.com in South Korea has gone from the top 150 websites in the country, to now outside of the top 700. Most of that decline has been just in the last couple of months.

China is now in the top 5 regions but that's not very interesting, given that it's the largest population of people and internet users in the world. What is more interesting for me is the couple of regions that are getting high on the list. Venezuela now accounts for 3.3% of Steemit.com traffic and 2.6% of users by Alexa's measurement. Venezuela is not a wealthy country, but it is a key region for Steem, where a cryptocurrency has a chance to genuinely compete with the local fiat currency. By web rank, it's the best country in the world for Steemit.com right now at 584.

Nigeria is similar, with a less severe currency crisis still in recent memory, and a very large and active Steem community, it's now in the top 10 countries for Steemit.com traffic overall and it's one of our best by web rank.

Note: due to Alexa's methods of statistical sampling, their measurements of traffic tend to be less accurate the lower the internet population in a certain country. That's why I do not draw attention above to Myanmar or Ireland, even though it seems to show surprisingly high traffic for the size of the internet userbase in those countries. Those are likely just statistical artifacts.

This is so cool! Nigerians are pretty loyal to systems that actually work and so I'm not totally surprised at this statistics. We would even have much more users if data wasn't so expensive here. Thanks @demotruk for this!

It's expected because Nigeria is the giant of Africa. If steemit.com gets popular in Nigeria then it will definitely be popular worldwide or a least in other countries in Africa. That's why Africans must be paid rapt attention!🏥💙♨

You are right bro. Africans most especially Nigerians must be paid attention to

It is funny that a year ago Nigeria was in the top 10 before. Some other places surpassed it when we had a bubble last year, but as others leave disillusioned, Nigerians are sticking with it.

Venezuela near the top is entirely new.

I live in Colombia, one of Venezuela's Neighbors. The crisis has increased, so I think it is the most decisive factor that push people to make some money whether using steemit or whatever means. I want to clarify that Venezuela was one of the most wealthiest contries of the region. Stil rich in natural resources. Is a shame that a bad goverment has led Venezuela to this crisis.

I love this sort of geographical analysis.

I'm wary of operating in stereotypes but Nigeria is also one of the capitals of online scammers.

Hopefully that's not coming to steem!

Think about it this way, Nigeria has a reputation for online scams, which is why Nigerian credit cards are considered high risk. That makes it harder for honest Nigerians to engage with the online economy -> it is a place with a real need for cryptocurrency, where there are no chargebacks.

Fair point.... hence why I said I was cautious about stereotypes.

Nigeria also has the largest population on Africa, maybe makes growth there less remarkable.

V. Difficult question to answer for any population: what motivates people to join the platform!

Nigeria also has the largest population on Africa, maybe makes growth there less remarkable.

To a degree but web ranks accounts for that fairly well. It's a much bigger element for China, India and the US where the online population is absolutely enormous, but Nigeria is in the top 10 online populations so it is a factor somewhat.

Thank You

Hello I don't know where you are from but don't spread stereotypes like that especially not on steem. I'm a medical doctor and web developer. I founded @Air-Clinic the only healthcare facility on this blockchain. I know alot of other well meaning Nigerians here like @Ehiboss, @Ogochukwu, @Eurogee, @Ejemai, to mention but a few. Nigerians are adding alot of value to this blockchain. Please don't play that card again. 🏥💙♨

Fair comment. I've also met some nice Nigerians on here.

I did qualify the stereotype point at the start of the comment.

Yah, but the good people in Nigeria far outnumber the bad people in any aspect.

I will say that scammers are everywhere in the world.

Fair point!

Exactly! This is steem ! Any Nigerian here is legit and have worked very hard to earn their reputations. I hate stereotypes!

The economic challenges in Nigeria is high, so it is understandable why their traffic on steemit has increased.

The value Steem is bringing to Africa is huge. If u give people tools to contribute to a society, they will contribute. The value of Steem is content and many countries can use their sweat equity to bring more value to this protocol we all benefit from. Many jobs can be create.

Thanks @demoturk! I work in a muti- national environment with many of my co- workers and students growing ever fearful of what the political and economic situations are in their countries. Steemit and cryptocurrencies seem to have become a kind of alternate security, despite the fluctuations and recemt volatility. Their own established currencies have been freefalling in some cases.

@demotruk, These are effective data and these kind of data and data analysis is really effective because in that way we can understand which region is Participating with percentage of amount. Good to hear about both the Nigeria and Venezuela, hope and wish that Steem will going to bring the needed and effective changes in the lives of people from Third World Countries.

Wishing you an great day and stay blessed. 🙂

Thanks for sharing this excellently educative stats. Glad Nigeria is doing quite well.
