Allright, so to be entirely truthful, it wasn't technically one of "my" posts that made it to the trending page. It was a post I wrote for the separate @reddragonfly Steemit account I run for the small art gallery my wife and I have together.
If you're interested, you can see the post-- entitled "Dealing With the "Business End" of Being an Artist" here.
Of course, it's pretty exciting to check in in the morning and discover that one of your posts is among the most read on Steemit... but this is primarily a story about the fact that there's no "Magic Formula" to making such an event happen. Sorry.
Nobody Was More Surprised Than Me...
Red Clover
The thing is, when I left work on Friday-- a couple of hours after publishing the post-- it had earned seven upvotes and 22 cents. Fairly typical results for what is-- basically-- a "minnow account."
Was it a "good" post? Yes. Had I hoped for a better response? Sure...
On Saturday morning-- with no publicity effort on my behalf!-- I suddenly found that the post has gained over 200 upvotes and now was listed with a payout of $258.00! The rewards have since "shrunk" due to the typical payout declines we see, these days... but on Saturday, it was a top-10 post.
Although the payout will definitely be "nice," the greatest change of lasting value was the fact that the @reddragonfly account's reputation score jumped from 46 to 52 overnight! That was even more unexpected.
So Why am I Bothering to Write About This?
Primarily to show that there is usually no rhyme or reason behind why any given post makes it-- or doesn't make it-- to the "featured" page.
Tiny purple flowers in the woods, Denmark
I have written numerous posts of similiar length and quality, some of which have made as little as $2.00, or as much as $200.00.
And-- by extension-- any idea you might have that you can write "for" getting on the Featured page is pretty much fantasy and wishful thinking.
You see, there was no comment left that the post has been selected by one of Steemit's "guilds" for a collective upvote.
Nobody had secretly boosted the post with a "promote" contribution.
Nobody had bought me a stout upvote from randowhale, booster or some other upvoting service.
The post simply "got legs" by itself, and went for a run.
But What About "Those People" who Always Seem to make Featured?
Flowers in our garden
Well, first of all... nobody I'm aware of "always" makes it to Featured, unless it's some major announcement about a change in site features, or a Hardfork update or something along those lines.
But if you take a closer look at the writers who often make it to the featured page, please note that they typically have thousands of followers and a very long posting history.
As was the case with my gallery post... a contribution from a small relatively new account is a relative rarity on the Featured page.
Some might feel that's "unfair," but I'm reminded of a while back, when @lukestokes wrote a very worthwhile piece about blogging, and how there is often years of (unseen) hard earned experience and working-for-nothing behind the well rewarded bloggers we see and possibly admire today.
So What Can You Do?
Reeds in the pond
Well, my own "strategy of choice" is to simply create the best quality content you can-- content you feel good about "representing" you-- then making it visually attractive and potentially useful to whatever target audience you think would be interested.
And then publish. And publish. And keep publishing.
Publish without expectations.
Now "without expectations" doesn't mean you have to give up having hopes and ambitions... just keep in mind that "expecting" a specific outcome will most likely lead to disappointment. After nearly six months and almost 260 blog posts, I have never published one with any expectations... but plenty of hopes and prayers!
Good luck! Do your best... and you never know, you might end up on the "Featured" list!
How about YOU? Have you ever had one of your posts make it to the "Featured" page? Or is it a pretty regular occurrence for you? Do you think there's any kind of "secret" to creating a "featured" post? Do you think it matters to your overall Steemit success? Leave a comment-- share your experiences and feedback-- be part of the conversation!

I'm pretty new to steemit, just started today. I think that this article that you have put together is amazing!! And I mean amazing! Congrats on jumping up so high so fast also!! And i don't know about the future, but I haven't had much luck. Unless you count about a dollar, I mean, I didn't even think i was going to get that much! Thanks for sharing about how to get better at Steemit!!

Welcome to Steemit, and thanks for your comment! Just have a little patience-- it takes a little time to build a following, as it does with ALL social media... even a couple of weeks in, I remember having a post that got me a big fat ZERO... but just keep going, it's well worth it!

So I commented on your post then, lol... My passion is photography so I had few posts that finished on trending page but mostly for bw/monochrome tag/category, payouts are minimal, but the feeling is still great. Congratulations!

@dijana969, Steemit is a small world... even with 250,000 users!
Yes, I've noticed some of the payouts end up not being all that impressive, in the end. But still, I enjoy the sense of "did something right."

I've made it to "trending" just once! It was huge and totally unexpected! I think I peaked at number 4 on "trending".
I was in "hot" and "trending" simultaneously.
As you said, there are no sure fire blueprints to follow. Mine was a success story on a steemgig I got involved in. I would have said Steemians love success stories but there has been so many after mine that didn't make it anywhere close.
Making it on that scale did wonders to my reputation score and also have me some form of credibility on the platform so yeah, it does have an effect. Would be nice to have another experience like that 😊

Yes, I remember your "journey" well... and whether you were looking for it, or not, it seems like it more or less launched you into being the unofficial "team lead" for Steemit in Nigeria.
I feel certain it will happen again... but probably at some time you're not expecting it!
Steem on!

Congratulations on the trending post, that's awesome. I have never made it to the top of the general Steem trending page, although I've been up near the top of the music tag a few times.
It's hard not to have expectations after a while, but you're right that the best way to do it is to just focus on making more good posts.

@heymattsokol, I think what was most memorable about this was that I had pretty much already written it off as "just another $1 post" and then suddenly BOOM. Which really made me pause to realize that the best strategy around here is-- as you said-- just focusing on creating good content.

That is great, kinda like my Silverbird drawing post last week. I posted it over on Discord and Steemit.chat and one of the "art-trails" picked it up and set the process in motion, the vote train got it to trending in art and drawing, then more people saw it and followed in giving it real views and votes to go with it. It was at $6 and change before, then shot up to $192 before decaying to $108 at payout tonight. But that's fine with me :-) I'll take it. I drop each of my new posts over there now, once in the morning, once at night. Like playing the lottery.

Yeah @steempowerpics, I remember the Silverbird post! And I remember being impressed as hell that something in "art" would go so high, since it's almost always crypto-related stuff that takes off like that.
Funny thing is, I have never "marketed" a single post... except "externally" (Facebook, twitter, Google+, etc) to true top recruit new people to Steemit. I should probably "take a hint" from your experience and use some of the Steemit tools....

Yeah , I was shocked too. I was like really, the bird?! Out of everything I have posted... the bird?! :-D
I haven't had another bite with the trails, but I do get more upvotes per post and a steady trend of new followers now that I am posting over there than I was before. Good thing is, since you put them in appropriate categories, the people who find you actually comment and seem interested in what you posted.

Thanks! I suppose I still "suffer" from one of my father's lifelessons from when I was little: "A job worth doing is worth doing WELL."
Somehow, that has always stuck with me... find is extremely hard to do "good enough" and "half assed" work... I'd rather not do it at all.
I almost never visit "trending" either... but it came up in my feed from someone I follow who posts daily "top tens" of various kinds.
Thanks for the kind words @merej99!

Sometimes I wonder about why I go to extremes...all or nothing; do well or don't do it... I think it's partly my personality but then I have to consider the jobs I've had in the past: food service - get an order wrong and they don't come back; obituarist for a daily newspaper - get it wrong and it's wrong FOREVER in the archives.
Even with my oldest son. He was assessed with Asperger's. Say one wrong thing and he's learned it wrong. Period. Always the pursuit of perfection...and severely imperfect.
That was quite a ramble, eh?

Our middle kid (29, boy) is a mild Aspie... most people wouldn't know it, except for when he has to learn new things; everything has to be introduced in a very specific order or it just goes in one ear and out the other... it has been a challenge for him at work, but once he knows something, her tends to be in the top 1% of whatever company he's with.

My son is 22 and has yet to embrace his "Aspie-ism" He's still angry at the world and angry at me but refuses to take any kind of ownership for finding joy. He thinks I'm trying to project a disability on him when I KNOW it can be a strength. I'm a mild Aspie and jumped for joy when I was finally assessed (in my 30s.) Ah well. One day...maybe...something will click in his head.

Often part of the resistance comes from the general societal biases... Aspergers gets classified as a thing you "have," like the pox, or a wart on your nose. I used to resist it, too, under that guise. But it's really just a tool for self-understanding... I've spent the better part of 20 years studying Sensory-Processing Sensitivity (often an Aspergers lookalike, but different) and people resist it, as well, because it gets classified as something you "have." Well, no. You don't. It's a way you're wired.

You forgot to add that you are an excellent writer with a lot of Steemit experience. That probably affected the success of the post positively as well.
It is very uplifting to read that a "random" post can get legs and run by its own once in a while. It makes it a bit more exciting to hit the publish button!

I guess I will leave it to others to decide whether I am "an excellent writer" or not-- but I appreciate the encouragement. In spite of 9000km and 30 years, I suppose echoes of Janteloven still hang as ghosts in my subconscious!
I considered it "shareworthy" particularly because the post was NOT "about Steemit" or "about cryptos" or one of the other usually popular areas. Art? Generally quite underrepresented... so that was definitely an encouragement.

Thanks @steemfluencer... it was just super unexpected. I've since thought about that, and realized that a couple of blog posts "pre-Steemit" that went semi-viral were also totally random. One was (fairly arbitrarily) tweeted by someone with two million followers; another (inadvertently) had matching (but better ranked) keywords with a NYT best selling non-fiction book. You can't "plan" for that stuff...
Interesting article... the Danish tax department is quite (in)famous for killing economic initiatives. This one is weird, though, since it's almost a "national duty" in Denmark to be supportive of renewable energy.

Today I was having a debate about the governments overall. A guy was saying the he didn't asked for any taxes, any fees any control, but he just grew in that environment and he believes that he doesn't need it. OK. The thing I've mentioned is the Danish government as an example of one that consist of many cool guys that perceive themselves as servants of the nation. Because at the end, minister means someone that serves his people.

Awesome stuff! Not even about the rewards, but just for the 200+ upvotes, it must be such a thrilling experience.
What makes me think in this situation is the fact if one of a person's posts does get 200+ upvotes, then I think it's a clear indication than the content is liked by many people.
So for all those people who are producing top-notch content, it's not the fact that it's not good enough to receive upvotes, but rather just lack of exposure. People need to learn the power of self-marketing, and exposure! It's powerful stuff.
This post actually just inspired me to be persistent, because in due time, with consistent hustle, people will see your stuff and like it, the way it's supposed to be! :)
